Jill (wanderingrogue) | 329 comments Jamie, I'm glad you liked it! I agree with Stephanie; go ahead and go and buy his books. One of my most prized possessions is a personalized autographed copy of Me Talk Pretty One Day. I met Sedaris a little over a year ago at a reading he did and, of course, I was a colossal dork and blurted out "I've been reading you since high school!!" (I'm thirty.) My personalized autograph reads "To: Jill. You make me feel so old. David Sedaris."

Ehh, I am not the strongest in history, so I could probably let that go, and just enjoy it as a good story. Thanks for the input!

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments I completely adored Shadow of the wind! I think it is the best back cover summary I ever read and couldn't wait to read the whole story. I do remember it was sometiems a bit heavy and long but the whole idea about the boy being allowed to pick one book.....heaven...paradise....

message 6805: by Linda (new)

Linda | 887 comments Hooray for everyone on the bandwagon for Shadow of the Wind. I also loved it because my husband and I went to Barcelona, Spain last year and I could relate the some of the areas described in the book.

Allison (sockweasel) | 432 comments Glad you guys loved Shadow of the Wind too! <3 Linda, I agree that the book is that much better having been to Barcelona (I was there a few years ago, and it's one of my favorite cities!) :)

I was digging around online this morning and found out that Carlos Ruiz Zafon is releasing the prequel to Shadow of the Wind next year! :) Yay!! :) It's called The Angel's Game and is coming out in June. Can't wait! :)

Kellie (acountkel) | 992 comments Just finished The Clock Winder
One of Anne Tyler's early ones.
All I can say was it was weird. All the characters had issues. No one was normal. It was hard to relate. The story line was pretty good, I just had a hard time relating to ANY of the characters.

Going to start one I have already read.A Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail

I have read this before and loved it. My bookclub chose it for January's read so I get to read it again. Can't wait. :)

Melanie Finished The Boy in the Striped Pajamas by John Boyne and just started Unaccustomed Earth by Jhumpa Lahiri.

Suzanne | 157 comments Not sure if I responded to this question. I'm reading Dewey--the small town library cat who touched the world. It's a cute story that Santa got for me. Actually, I bought it in Nov. but waited til Xmas to put it under the tree. I'm also reading The Secret Between Us by Barbara Delinsky. I'm trying to finish Dewey first though. I'm a one-book-at-a- time gal.

Debby | 3804 comments I'm almost finished listening to The Hour I First Believed by Wally Lamb. I'm on CD 18 of 20. It is definitely a maze of very captivating storylines, so I'm loking forward to seeing how they will all tie together in the end.

I heard the author of Color for Water speak at the National Book Festival this September - he was a very humerous and entertaining fellow.

Robin (robinsullivan) | 997 comments I just finished reading....The Amulet of Samarkand by Jonathan Stroud

I really didn't even have this on my TBR list but I was not "captivated" by any of the ones I recently started so hubby gave me this one. It was a fast enjoyable read. I rellke liked the character of Bartimaeus. And while Natheniel is certainly no Harry Potter I found this book an enjoyable read.

Vicki Janet wrote: "im finishing up the True Blood (Sookie Stackhouse) series and i love it. im thinking of starting the Black Dagger Brotherhood series. Has anyone read it?"

I read the first one I believe, Dark Lover. Unfortunately I cannot compare it to Sookie Stackhouse, because I haven't gotten there yet. My opinion was it was a fast paced novel, with some interesting characters... My friends that read it before me called it vampire porn, and while there were some relatively heated sex scenes, I don't think it was much worse than any other romance novel. It's not a book to take too seriously, but if you are looking for something fun, maybe give the first one a try.

I read them all in a short amount of time. No great literary value there, but I will say that it was a great, light read and kept me entertained.

I'm getting ready to start War and Peace!

I loved the Twilight series as well. True, the Twilight books aren't really deep literature, but they are still very good books. And any novel that gets kids to put down their video game controllers and read a book wins with me. Meyer's adult novel The Host was also very good. I'm currently re-reading The Shining. I had a goal of 200 books for 2008 but I hit that over a week ago so now I'm aiming for 210 by Wednesday.

message 6833: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) Wow Cindy! Congrats on going above and beyond your goal. How do you read so fast?

Kelly | 204 comments Cindy that's awesome. Do you read fast and if so how did you learn to? WOW!

message 6835: by Justine (new)

Justine (paperbackheart) I got quite a bit of reading done last week (vacation!)...The first five books of the Southern Vampire/Sookie Stackhouse/whatever you want to call them series. I read Stardust and wasn't as crazy about it as the other books I've read by Neil Gaiman.
And I just finished the little bit of Eat, Pray, Love: One Woman's Search for Everything Across Italy, India and Indonesia I had left over on my lunch break.
I just started Good in Bed because it finally came from PBS, even though I'm still in the middle of Middlesex and trudging (again - I have a problem with Jane Austen) through Northanger Abbey at work.

message 6836: by Cindy (last edited Dec 29, 2008 01:33PM) (new)

Cindy (wanna_read_all_the_books) On average I can read a novel a day. I'm single, no kids, and I travel a lot for work so I spend a lot of down time in hotel rooms. I've always read fast, even as a kid. It's just what I do. lol I get into a book and devour it, then I feel sad when it ends so I start a new one. :)

Granted I read all of the Postsecret books and several Shel Siverstein books this year and they don't take long to get through. And I re-read a lot of books from my childhood too so they went fast. Next year I'm sticking with a goal of 100. 200 was too stressful. lol

Jenna (backwoodsbabble) | 52 comments I am just about to start the Art of War (Sun Tzu).. it's been on my to read list (though I forgot to transfer a few over here) for an eternity.

I also just finished Wizard's First Rule (Terry Goodkind) which is what the new series Legend of the Seeker is based on. The book is waaaaaaaay better and not like the series much at all except perhaps for the names and the main premise.

I also just finished the Kite Runner (Khaled Housseini) which was alot better than I expected it to be. Definitely worth the read

message 6838: by Kelly (new)

Kelly | 204 comments Well I'm still impressed. Good luck with your new goal. Postsecret books? I'm not familiar with those. Who is the author?

I was wondering if The Host was good. I've been debating about reading it so thanks. I'll definitely have to check it out and I agree with you about Stephenie Meyers and the Twilight Series: they are good books and many, many people started reading because of her so that's a great thing. I wasn't trying to demean the books. I enjoyed them all and have thought about reading them again down the road.

Also, way to go for reading 200 books and over. That's amazing. I have always loved to read but I don't have a lot of time but I've resolved to set aside more time this year to read all those books I've been wanting to read for so long. I have a goal of 50 so we'll see how that goes :)

Cameron (cswagner) I'm currently reading A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin. I'm only about 100 pages in, but man this is some of the best fantasy I have ever read...

message 6849: by Darla (new)

Darla (sylvanfox) | 573 comments Kelly - I'm only about 130 pages in (And the Band Played On:Politics People and the AIDS epidemic) but so far I'm finding it a very wonderful read. The writing style is a little dry (the man who wrote the book is a journalist... picture a cross between a decent non-fiction book and a 621 page article) but so far I'm not finding it to be a difficult read. It is both fascinating and horrifying, and also very terribly heartbreaking.

It saddens me to think that anyone could turn a blind eye to a situation like the AIDS epidemic, let alone almost everyone. It seems to me to be a potent reminder of how far we have to go as a civilization.
