Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Vicki, I have meet 5 authors in total.

Jodi Picoult
Jon McGregor
Alison Penton Harper

message 6752: by Vicki (new)

Vicki Fiona, I knew a few before they were technically published, such as past professors. I just remembered I had a book signed by Jennifer Egan too. We had some visiting authors come to our college one year.

message 6753: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 1000 comments I finished The Stupidest Angel before Christmas and am now onto The Other Boleyn Girl, which I borrowed from my brother's girlfriend.

message 6754: by Jill (new)

Jill (wanderingrogue) | 329 comments Fiona, for what it's worth, I liked Spook. It wasn't as good as Stiff, but I still thought it was very well researched. My only complaint was that I felt she was a little too soft on the frauds and pseudoscience types. But then, I'm a formal paranormal investigator turned skeptic and debunker, so I certainly have my biases. I've heard ardent believers in the supernatural complain that she's too mean to their side, so I guess, depending on your personal sacred cow, it could go one way or the other. I still think it's worth a look.

I haven't read Bonk, but I've heard nothing but good things. Most people I know who've read all three still think her best book is Stiff, though.

I borrowed The Other Boleyn Girl also, interested in knowing what you think about it. I haven't gotten near it yet, fortunately my cousin isn't in a rush to get it back.

message 6757: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa Just finished Don't Look Now by Daphne duMaurier, and I am currently reading Landscape Turned Red-the Battle of Antietam. It is wonderful! I also really want to read The Man In the Picture.

message 6758: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 1000 comments Vicki, I'm not even 100 pages in yet but I am enjoying it.

message 6759: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 9 comments I'm reading Three Bags Full by Leonie Swann currently. It's a sheep detective story and it is absolutely adorable and hilarious already - and I'm only 70 pages in!

Vanessa - what did you think of Don't Look Now? Have you read My Cousin Rachel by duMaurier? I loved that one, haven't read Don't Look tho.

Lori (tnbbc) | 10623 comments Mod
I finished the Sookie book #4, and have just started At Swim-Two-Birds by Flann O'Brien. I have read and liked The Third Policeman by him, and have high hopes for this one, but so far I am not getting it. It could be the writing (which is totally different from TTP), so hopefully either I get used to it, or it gets better.

Aimee,
I do this every time I go to the library. Your list looks pretty good! The Poisonwood Bible is one of my favorites!! Enjoy

message 6765: by Lindsey (new)

Lindsey Yay, Lori. Thanks for the heads up

Hi Jackie. I have to say, reading a beloved story written from another character's point of view is great fun. I fully intend to try it again really soon by reading Ender's Shadow - which is the story Ender's Game written from the character Bean's point of view. I strongly suspect I'll ignore the other subsequent books that are in the series, but for point of view's sake I want to hear Bean out.

Kelly | 204 comments Jamie how do you read so fast? How many pages was Holidays on Ice? Any secrets to help us slow readers?

message 6768: by Kelly (new)

Kelly | 204 comments Darla I saw parts of that movie. Let us know how the book is please!

message 6769: by Jill (new)

Jill (wanderingrogue) | 329 comments Jamie, how was Holidays On Ice? I've heard nothing but good things and David Sedaris is one of my favorite writers.

message 6770: by Darla (new)

Darla (sylvanfox) | 573 comments I'll let you know Kelly... The movie is absolutely wonderful, but I have been warned that the book is very dry. Nevertheless, I think it's an important read.

message 6771: by Kelly (new)

Kelly | 204 comments THANK YOU DARLA

JG (Introverted Reader) I just finished The Graveyard Book and I loved it. Gaiman says he was influenced by The Jungle Book in this one, but I was seeing a little bit of "The Boy Who Lived" and a bigger bit of a young Odd Thomas.

I think I'll get started on our Guernsey book next.

message 6773: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Just finished The Man in the Picture - Susan Hill . Will now read Arctic Hero - Catherine Johnson .

message 6774: by Jessika (new)

Jessika Hoover (jessalittlebooknerd) I just finished Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and was left in tears. I had originally planned to finish my Dickens book, by finishing up with Cricket on the Hearth, but I'm too caught up in Harry now, so maybe when I get back from California. Anyway, I've started Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, and I'm really excited to start it because the sixth and seventh books are the only ones of the series that aren't a re-read for me, so I'm looking forward to starting something new! :)

message 6775: by Jessika (new)

Jessika Hoover (jessalittlebooknerd) Yeah, I'm very very behind on all of my reading...I still have yet to read Twilight! And I feel like everyone else has read those already! It's one thing I hate about being in college--I don't have time to read anything for enjoyment :-/

message 6776: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Jess, I still have all 4 on my TBR pile hun xx

message 6777: by Jessika (new)

Jessika Hoover (jessalittlebooknerd) Hmm, maybe I'll have to start doing that! I started last semester determined to read at least a chapter a day before bed...yeah, it didn't exactly work out that way haha

So, needless to say, I live for winter and summer break!

Hi Laura,

Don't Look Now was excellent. My favorites were The Birds, Monte Verita, and The Blue Lenses. I loved My Cousin Rachel! You are the only other person that I know who has read that one. Have you read Rebecca?

The great thing about Twilight is that the books are such easy reads. The pages go by quickly.

Linda | 887 comments I also read her Nineteen Minutes and Change of Heart. I believe she has another one coming out soon. I just finished The Pact as well and found it a thought provoking read.

message 6785: by Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (last edited Dec 28, 2008 08:18AM) (new)

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 1736 comments Vicki - I enjoyed The Other Boleyn Girl - as a novel. The historian in me was appalled. But I found it a fun read - just don't think of it as very accurate history.

I started Tudor Wench, by Elswyth Thane, last night. It's a historical novel about Elizabeth I, and I'm taking it slowly. Nice start, though.

message 6786: by Jenna (new)

Jenna | 224 comments I'm reading Suite Francaise by Irene Nemirovsky. I really like it so far but have not had much time to read it so far with the holidays. Can't wait to really sit down and get into it.

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 636 comments Kelly wrote: "Jamie how do you read so fast? How many pages was Holidays on Ice? Any secrets to help us slow readers? "

Well..it was really short..and i had the whole house to myself..i think the book was only like 130 pages..I mean..I have always been a fast reader since I could read..but I think it was mostly do to the fact that it was so short..and that I was completely uninterrupted for about 2 or 3 hours :)

Jill...I really liked it..it was definitely my kind of humor..i guess he probably isn't for everyone..I'm excited to read more Sedaris..that was actually my first one..but I have been waiting for some of his other books to come through paperbackswap..but after reading this one..i kind of just want to stop waiting and go buy them!

Chrystal | 144 comments I just started My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult. Love it so far. Also loved Nineteen Minutes by her as well. Only on my 2nd Jodi Picoult.

Fiona-I've only read the first Harry Potter....want to definitely read more. I'm on the list at the library for the second. I have a thing about reading a series in order!

message 6791: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments don't take it Fiona, just don't go in places with books and then you will maybe have a chance to wait with reading this beautiful book full of poetry.

message 6798: by Beth Ann (new)

Beth Ann (bagrover) I gave up the ghost that was The Shack. I really only had about 20 pages left to go. I just skipped to the last few pages and read them. What torture that book was! I wouldn't let myself read anything else till I finished it and I think it took me FOREVER! What a piece of pure crap! I guess I shouldn't say that, there were a few things in it that gave me good food for thought, but overall, I found it to drawn out and BORING! Sorry if I offended anyone, but I really just did not enjoy this book for all the hype it got.

Anyway...now I am starting The Tale of Despereaux. I read this several years ago to my neices when they came to live with us following Hurrican Katrina. I had thought that my almost 4 year old would sit and listen to me reading it to her, lol! How insane was my thinking?!?!? HA! She did make it an astonishing 25 pages, that was 3 whole chapters. Now I am sitting reading it to myself. I loved reading it to my neices, they were a bit older and enjoy reading a lot more than my own child does, sad.

Jamie - don't wait! Go out and buy them! David Sedaris is my favorite writer (for humor, anyway). I absolutely love him. I own most of his books and they are ones I would never swap away - I think a lot of people feel the same way which is why he doesn't show up on PBS very often! :) My favorite Sedaris is Me Talk Pretty One Day, but they're all amazing! His new one is great too (When You Are Engulfed in Flames) - I wouldn't have read it yet if I hadn't borrowed it from a friend, though - I am usually too cheap to buy hardcovers! Pick a couple up, you won't regret it. I am literally in tears with laughter when reading his books.

message 6800: by Paula (new)

Paula | 1098 comments Jackie, I bet that was interesting to see that in Ripleys. I don't see the attraction either. Supposedly the men thought the smaller the foot, the more beautiful the girl. Some of them married on the shoe size alone. Very strange custom to us but it was important to them at one time. I think you will enjoy the "Splendid Slipper" book.
