What are you reading?
I think each group has a moderator. Lori is a super mod though because she's amazing.Otis started the site. You can find his site on the Librarians site and the Feedback site.
I just finished The Hours and thought it was absolutely beautiful. I have no idea what to read next that won't be such a big let-down. I love/hate when that happens.
Linda,
I have not read that article, but I'll try to Google it. Our club had the most heated debate over 3 Cups of Tea. Some women had lived in Muslim cultures and felt we shouldn't interfere. One woman was reluctant to read it because she was a staunch republican and felt it would bash Bush. We have a lawyer in the group that mentions she's a lawyer in every conversation... Some people get upset if you don't like their book... It is so much fun though, and I learn something new everytime I go.
Hi Kelly. I joined goodreads about a year and a half ago, and once I got my feet under me, I just created this group. I was a member of a bunch of other sites, but they werent set up quite the way I liked, so thats what prompted me to start my own.
I wish I worked for Goodreads, it would be amazing to get paid for doing this... as for the title of SuperMod... I tease... All of the members here have given me "big-head" syndrome! I try my best to keep everyone happy and trust me, with over 1800 members, you would think it wouldnt be easy, but it is!!
Its the members of this group who keep everything running so smoothly!!

Just finished When the Bough Breaks - Jonathan Kellerman. Will now read In Their Footsteps - Tess Gerritsen.
It's been a terrible reading week, but I just picked up Rebel Angels again - I will be so glad when finals week is over.
Finished Looking for Alaska, god, I love John Green's writing style.
I have the feeling Logan would like Looking for Alaska...
speaking of Logan, WHERE HAS HE BEEN?
I'm reading Agatha Christie's "After the Funeral" (a Poirot novel, I love that little guy), and after that I'm going to read Ed McBain's "Cop Hater", which is the first 87th Precinct novel, hurrah! :) I hate reading things out of order, but I've already read "Fuzz" and "Fiddlers"...
I am currently reading Outlander by Diana Gabaldon. But I am also trying to read the Lucky One by Nicholas Sparks and Airhead by Meg Cabot.
Emma, what are you talking about? I'm right here. I've been here literally the whole time. Kidding. I curtailed a lot of my Goodreads activity in November for Nanowrimo and then just kept the streak alive in December. Sometimes it's good to revisit the flesh-and-blood world. Sometimes.I really just don't have the time these days to read through this group in the detail that I used to. That's the only downfall I can see to TNBBC growing as large as it has, I just can't keep up.
Oh. And I'm currently trading off of reading between Tolstoy's War & Peace and Gogol's Dead Souls. December is made for the Russians (or Russians are made for December, I'm not sure). I like this approach because after 300 pages of military maneuvers and contemplations on feudal living, I can change to Gogol, who is far more light-hearted and amusing.
I just finsihed the Music Lesson by Katie Webber. I would suggest that if you cna get your hands on it, it is a good read. So I'm going to start Empire Falls by Richard Russo shortly. I hope its good.
Lori, the book you just started deals with the supernatural? Do you know of any good books that deal with anything paranormal. Fiction or Nonfiction.
I'm bummed because I went to the library to get Stardust and Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman and they were closed for Software updates and staff training. Oh well I'll go tomorrow.
I'm reading The Winthrop Woman by Anya Seyton (the second pick for my book club's "Age of Exploration" theme we're doing for 3 months). I'm not quite 100 pages into it, but so far, so good.
Maureen I LOVE THE WINTHROP WOMAN it is one of my favorite historical fiction books...I've read a few of her other's but that is my favorite so far...I haven't read Katherine yet though and that's supposed to be her best so someday it will reach the top of my mt. tbr pile.
This has been a reading week for me! Luckily not feeling good sometimes let you still read.It Must Be Love
A Wedding in December
The Long Weekend
First one is funny, light and fast. Second one didn't started well and I was hoping it would get a lot better. It did get better and I liked it. Not great but good.
The long weekend is a short YA book, but damned..I ahd to start reading a different book in between because I was reading it in the evening, was alone...and got a bit scared. It is really wel written, strong but.... sometimes a bit creepy for me.
Reading A Christmas Surprise which I like a lot. Written by an Irish author and happening in Ireland. Funny too.
Just finished The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie SocietyOh boy...I should know enough not to rely on all the hype when deciding on whether to read a book or not. It's not like I really disliked this book. I was just prepared to be blown away and I wasn't. Maybe because of the format this book was written in. Letter form. I had a difficult time staying on track. I felt like I was missing things and had to go back and reread. I hate doing that. The idea of the book was interesting. To tell a story thru letters between several people made it seem very realistic. Some of the story lines were tragic. The description of the island makes me want to go there or study the history of Guernsey Island during WWII. I just couldn't get overly excited about this.
Going to start The Book of Lies
I just finished Company of Liars by Karen Maitland, an excellent read. I'm now reading The Absolutely True Story of a Part-time Indian, a YA book.
I finished "The Confessions of Max Tivoli" and am now reading "The Captured" a NF by Zecsh (I think that's how to spell it). It's not for the faint of heart.
Reading "How Fiction Works" by James Wood and "Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" by Stieg Larsson, and waiting for more snow.
Just finished Jonathon Strange and Mr. Norrell by Susana York. A very fun read once I got into it. It doesn't seem like 800 pages.Currently reading The Salt Roads by Nola Hopkinson for book club. I am more than half way through it, but still not sure how I feel about it. It is several stories in one book, and I like one of the stories a lot better than the others, which makes me kind of irritated when she switches stories. Anyone else read this?
Jess, you asked about Charles Dickens's other Christmas stories. I'm mostly enjoying, but it seems like it's taking me forever to read them! Of course that could be because this time of year is just so crazy busy! So far I would recommend them though.
Ann from S.C. wrote: "Kellie, at least you finished it. I could not. But I am going to try agiain as my next book:)"I thought I was the only one who had trouble with it. I didn't know you did too! Makes me feel a bit better. :)
So...I've been away from the group for several days now -- Missed you all btw.I was working furiously to get my husband's 2nd book proofed and back to them for layout - Yah!
So I've not read this thread since 6601..So there may be some old stuff here.
6606: Beth Ann - I'm interested in "The Shack" - will be looking for your review when you are done.
6624: Kellie - hmmm - I was seriously considering "The Story of Edgar Sawtelle" - I might be reconsidering now I'm going to keep my feelers out before deciding
6636: Ann - I LOVED THE STAND - hope you will too - but feel better and be grateful you don't have "Tripps"
6650: (G)Emma - CONGRATULATIONS on finishing Harry Potter - Glad you liked it!!
6652: Cameron - Hope you like book 2 - I'm sure you will!!
6658: Fiona - So sorry to hear about your upcoming operation - ouch!
6689: Darla - Oh Watership Down is so special !! - You'll love it I'm sure
6690: Fiona - Please pick up Watership Down again -- well after you read Crown Conspiracy (wink)
6692: Gina - Didn't know Forest Gump was a book - I usually like to read books before the movie but I'll do this in reverse now that I know it exists - thanks.
6703: Ofmatt - Sorry to hear you didn't like The Boy in Striped Pajamas - I was thinking of reading it. But I'll wait now till I hear from others
6719: Maraha - eep another thumbs down for Sawtelle - Thanks for sharing - I'm continuing to reconsider it
6720: Chrystal - I'd be interested in your thougts on "The Host" - I've stopped Twilight Series after book 2 but interested in peoples thoughts in this other one.
6732: Melody - Sorry to hear you did not get into Prodical Summer - I've heard good things from people here - it is on my TBR
6736: The Alienist - is also one I'm looking at - I was intriqued by the "First Paragraph" posting of this.
6737: Kellie - Thanks for weighing in on Sawtelle - and you will really like Gursney -- God I can't bring myself to type the whole title anymore !!
6738: Jackie - Glad you liked Stardust - I don't know I'm 1/2 way through and it is not ringing my bell but I want to finishe it by the end of the month and discuss.
6741: Kathy - Thanks for filling me in on the episode "Day of the Dead"
6742: I'm interested in the Shack - I think it's going to be reading it as part of a face2face club soon
6747: Yolanda - I've never heard of carrot-top - and I love fantasy - I'll look into it more
6749: Jillian - Personally I really disliked Wicked - if you've seen the musical be forewarned that it is MUCH different then that (which is perfection BTW) - Just a warning.
6759: Kim - thanks for weighing in on Sawtelle - youy guys might have just saved me from something ;-)
6798: Andrew - how did you like Crusoe? I remember that fondly - but it was ages ago that I read it
6861: Jane - Woot glad you are digging Crown Conspiracy - I just told hubby your comments - he was stoked. can't wait to hear what you say after completing it.
6864: Jess - My favorite Potter was Prizoner of Akabazan - but the whole series was lovely - glad you are enjoying it.
6866: Kelly - The Stand is a GREAT book - though the ending is lacking - but not enough to kill all the other things in it. - Enjoy
6880: Kim - meetup.com is big where I live - I'm a member of several meetup groups and run a meetup for writers. It is a great site!!
6916: Kellie - Haha see what happens when I stay away - your first post just started reading now you are done! Sorry you did not like it - we probably contributed with all our hype - when you have high expectations there is a long way to fall. I really liked this book - but thought the end was a bit "tacked on" I personally liked the letter form and thought they did good with it. Anyway I'm interested in what you think about Book of Lies - I saw Meltzer speak on this in September and he was very compelling in his enthusism for the subject.
And now I am caught up !!!
Wife of GR author: Michael J. Sullivan | The Crown Conspiracy (10/08) | Avempartha (04/09)
Okay now that I caught up with everyone else... Here is what I've been up to.Stardust - about 1/2 way through - not all that excited by it but want to finish and discuss with the group.
Flight - Finished. I really was perplexed in the middle and wondering - where the heck is this going - but when I got to the end - wow - I was blown away - the auhor wrapped it up nicely.
Christmas Carol - Haven't been reading much as of late -but loved what I have so far - also trying to finish this up by month end - sure I can - it's short from here out.
Gursney Liteary and Potato Peel Pie - I loved this book - found the format interesting, the characters charming. I did think the end was a little "tacked on" thought the pace changed abruptly toward the end but that might be related to issues with the author's health?
Mistborn - My first Brandon Sanderson book - and I really enjoyed it. Thought he spent a bit too much time on the magic system but the world, characters, and plot were good. He also could have done better with the pacing - but overall I'm critical on pacing so others will not be as upset with it as I am.
Avempartha - This is my husband's second book and for a long time it was my least favorite of his six book series. Not that it was awful just something has to be last and it was it. But....now that we've been working on it alot and did some things in the editing stage it is now one of my favorites and I really like what it has turned into. The reading right now was due to final proof before typesetting. A lot of people seem excited to read the next one so I hope they like it as much as I do.
Now off to read the other threads I've missed while I was in editing/proofing hell ;-)
I Know This Much Is True --- have you guys read this? Ooooh......it's so good. It's so LONG and you don't even realize it. I hit page 400 and felt like it was page 10.
Has anyone here read Empire Falls. While a good book, its a difficult read, for me. I'm finding it takes long for me to read a little, and I just wonder if I'm the only one.
Robin- The Host was very hard to get started.....kind of hard to follow for the first few chapters, but then it picked up pace. I am going to be up late tonight to try to finish it....it's due back to the library tomorrow!!!! I'll give you a better review when I'm done. I almost put it down when I first started it, but I'm glad that I didn't.
I finished "City of Thieves" by David Benioff and recommend it to anyone who loves historical fiction. It's the type of book that makes you grateful for the simple things you have in your life.Anyhoo, next I needed something that would be a really good read, but wouldn't require much effort and would instantly suck me in to the story. So I pulled "Red Knife" by William Kent Krueger out of my TBR pile and started it. I always enjoy his books.
Andrew, I read EMPIRE FALLS this fall, and I liked it. Was not blown away, but it was good.Carrie, I KNOW THIS MUCH IS TRUE is one of my all time favs. I am now reading Lambs new one THE HOUR I FIRST BELIEVED, page 135. It is fantastic!
I am also reading Kootzs new one, YOUR HREAT BELONGS TO ME. It was a little hard to get into, but I am now loving it!!
Robin wrote: "Okay now that I caught up with everyone else... Here is what I've been up to.Stardust - about 1/2 way through - not all that excited by it but want to finish and discuss with the group.
Flig..."
Robin, Glad to see you liked Guernsey and the format as much as I did. Years ago I read
Griffin & Sabine - An Extraordinary Correspondence- Nick Bantock - different story, but similar format. Very intriguing read.
I realize that a person's opinion on any one book is very subjective, but don't give up on Edgar Sawtelle quite yet. One person's "ugh" is another person's "ahhh".

How did you get to be super mod for goodreads. Do you work for them or did you start this site? How long has this site been around? Sorry about all the questions but since I've been using Goodreads I have become curious about how it came about. Im so glad I found it. Thanks
