Kate (kathrynlouwca) OMG, Jenna, that is what I loved about Twilight. I loved that romance! And Edward...

message 5752: by Dorie (new)

Dorie (dorieann) | 430 comments Paula, glad you liked it. And I agree with you about the ending. Just perfect.

message 5753: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn (katymac55) Madame Bovary...interesting, revealing and curious. I don't really know what to think, other than I'm pretty sure that I don't like any of the characters exept Charles (poor guy!)he's the only honest one. ANyone else read this?

message 5754: by Ann from S.C. (new)

Ann from S.C. | 1395 comments I read MADAME BOVARY a fews years back. One of my first "classics", and I was really glad I read it. Yes, It was hard to find any characters to really like, but, have you finished it? Just wait...

I finally!!! finished EOE! Really liked it!

Now am putting on hold THE STUPIDIST ANGEL, and picking up...
THE 13TH TALE by Diane Setterfield

message 5755: by Kate (new)

Kate (kathrynlouwca) I am planning on reading Madame Bovary this year. I haven't read it before and it has been on my TBR bookshelf at home for a few years.

message 5756: by Kellie (new)

Kellie (acountkel) | 992 comments Ohhh. Paula, you are about to start one of my all time FAVORITE series. Harry Bosch is the man! Connelly is a great writer.
Can't wait to hear how you liked it!!

message 5757: by JT (new)

JT (jtishere) Wow, it's been a while since I've been on here. Life just gets too busy for fun sometimes!!

Well, the holidays are upon us, and I have a ton of things I'm reading concurrently...Here goes...

Anna Karenina - I'm finally on a roll with this one and really enjoying it.

A Tale of Two Cities - taking a mini-break from it at the moment but it's great

Jerusalem Inn by Martha Grimes - part of her Richard Jury series (it takes place at Christmas)

Holidays on Ice by David Sedaris

Christmas at the New Yorker - this is a fantastic anthology of stories, essays, cartoons, etc. from the New Yorker over the years.

message 5759: by Darla (new)

Darla (sylvanfox) | 573 comments Done with HP 4 now on to Order of the Phoenix

message 5760: by Catherine (new)

Catherine | 175 comments I promised myself I would read Brother, I'm Dying for class, but I couldn't resist starting Rebel Angels instead. In between bouts of boring research on a German epic, that is.

message 5761: by Connie (new)

Connie | 188 comments I just finished We the Living: 60th Anniversary Edition and am currently reading Hawaii: A Novel.

message 5762: by Kate (new)

Kate (kathrynlouwca) Darla, what did you think of HP 4? It was my favorite!

Kellie (acountkel) | 992 comments Welcome back JT! We missed you!

Connie, I have Hawaii on my TBR. LEt me know how you like it and maybe I'll push it up to the top

message 5765: by Kellie (new)

Kellie (acountkel) | 992 comments Jessica...
I read 102 a couple years ago. It was OK for me. I found it hard to follow. Lots of people mentioned and I couldn't keep their stories straight.
I am glad I read it though. It was heart wrenching.

message 5766: by Connie (new)

Connie | 188 comments Kellie: So far it [Hawaii:] is wonderful, though I'm only about 170 pgs in.

message 5767: by onmerryday (new)

onmerryday Hello, I'm new here. Just want to share what I'm reading.

But before that I have to say that I have the habit of reading several
books at the same time and it's always leads to having a pile of books unfinished! Another bad habit is that I often feel an urge to buy at least one book whenever I stop by a bookshop. Very dangerous to my wallet.

Right now I'm reading Everything Is Illuminated: A Novel and Mary Poppins when I am upset or bored of something.

The first one makes me laugh and the second one makes me smile and want to be a child again.

message 5768: by Robin (last edited Nov 27, 2008 06:01AM) (new)

Robin (robinsullivan) | 997 comments Wow, I was out of this link for awhile and have a lot to catch up on.... ;-)

To Maranda: I don't think you are a freak for enjoying Julie and Julia - it is quite popular - it is just not my cup of tea - I generally don't like memoirs though I'm someone interested in Eat, Pray, Love....

To Mary: Ah we are few but we are proud of our lack of Twilight obsession and apparently not alone because...

To Jenna: Welcome to the minority perspective of Twilight.

To Paula: I too loved Water for Elephants - but when she killed off two characters I loved - it took a momentary bad turn. But aside from that I loved it.

To All: I had a great Thanksgiving present - I know it is shameless self promotion but I'm just bursting to share it especially with my new found friends here - see the Review in my signature to find out more.

Welcome!

message 5771: by Ann from S.C. (new)

Ann from S.C. | 1395 comments Welcome Pilarcat! I also like to read 2 or 3 at the same time. I pick up whichever book suits my moods too!

message 5772: by Anna (new)

Anna (wife228) Working on DARK SUMMER by Iris Johansen AND CERTAIN GIRLS by Jennifer Weiner

message 5773: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Just finished Where There's Smoke - Simon Beckett. Can't decide between Dissolution - C.J.Sansom or The Intruders - E.E. Richardson.

message 5774: by J.A. (new)

J.A. Fulkerson (desertwriter) | 18 comments Right now I am reading Danielle Steel's "Rogue". So far (I'm not very far into it yet) I think I am going to like it. It's starting off with less ho-hum back-story narrative than some of her recent books. I am collecting all of her novels because when I first began reading with a passion, her "Changes" was the first I read.

message 5775: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Gonna read: Dissolution, C.J. Sansom (My boys chose), Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close - Jonathan Safran Foer (need to read to hand back), The Intruders - E.E. Richardson (library book).

message 5776: by Melissa (new)

Melissa (melitious) I'm more than halfway through A Great and Terrible Beauty! I'm enjoying it very much so far and was so happy that we had an hour drive for Thanksgiving yesterday -- I got a ton of reading done! Looking forward to Monday, when I can start A Christmas Carol and my other December reads! I am picking up Steve & Me from the library tomorrow to read, as well.

message 5777: by Kelly (new)

Kelly | 204 comments Like I said Im reading True Believer by Nicholas Sparks. I have been wondering though. Has anyone out there ever read 'What Lisa Knew' by Joyce Johnson. I got to page 40 and gave up. Does it get any better? Is it worth struggling through it? Opinions anyone?

message 5778: by Kellie (new)

Kellie (acountkel) | 992 comments Haven't read What Lisa Knew but I have read True Believer. What do you think about it?
Have you read anything else by Sparks?
My favorites are The Notebook, The Wedding and Three Weeks with my Brother

message 5779: by Dorie (new)

Dorie (dorieann) | 430 comments Melissa, I'm jealous you can read in the car. I have motion sickness so I'm not able to do that. I used to ride the bus for 1/2 hour twice a day, and soooo wished I could read during that time. Unfortunately I don't like audio books.

message 5780: by Kellie (new)

Kellie (acountkel) | 992 comments I never could read in the car but since we bought the van, I am able to read in there. I read about 60 pages of East of Eden yesterday on the way to the mountains.

message 5781: by Kelly (new)

Kelly | 204 comments Im really enjoying True Believer. My daughter had just started it and told me what it was about. I love material about the paranormal so I was hooked within the first few pages. I have watched the movie The Notebook but havent read the book yet. Movie or book? Which do you think was better? Isnt East of Eden an older book?

message 5782: by Kellie (new)

Kellie (acountkel) | 992 comments The Notebook was a great book and great movie.
I loved them both.

East of Eden is a classic. It's really good though. I was a bit intimidated looking at it. But I am pleasantly surprised.

message 5783: by Linda (new)

Linda | 887 comments Kelly, I enjoyed True Believer as well. While I enjoyed The Notebook, couldn't really watch the movie. I think it was better for me to imagine than watch. Reading in a car, or train (I used to work in Downtown Chicago and trained back and forth everyday) no problem.

message 5784: by Kelly (new)

Kelly | 204 comments Well I guess Im adding another book to my insanely growing list.LOL. How many pages is it?

message 5785: by Kelly (new)

Kelly | 204 comments Linda thats great that you dont get motion sickness. I have a hard time reading with a lot of background noise too. Lots of times I hear that books are better and movies dont measure up. Take care.

message 5786: by J.A. (new)

J.A. Fulkerson (desertwriter) | 18 comments Hey, Melissa. I just wondered why you don't like audio books? I love them when travelling - it helps pass the time so much and I can "read" while driving alone. If I sit down to read, I usually fall asleep.

message 5787: by Atishay (new)

Atishay | 1451 comments I'll add True believer to my Tbr as well. I loved Notebook and Message in a bottle.

message 5788: by Darla (new)

Darla (sylvanfox) | 573 comments Kathryn... I liked HP 4. I find that the further I get into the series, the more I like the book. Books 1, 2, and 3 were good, but nothing I think I'd rave about or get obsessed with. 4 is my favorite so far, but I've only just started book 5, so we'll see.

message 5789: by Catherine (new)

Catherine | 175 comments I'm jealous, I would love re-read Harry Potter, I just don't have time to start all over again.

I'm about 60 pages into Brother, I'm Dying and it's decent so far. Definitely sad, but I hope it picks up (not gets happier, it just seems uneven right now).

message 5790: by Ann from S.C. (new)

Ann from S.C. | 1395 comments I am reading AGAINST MEDICAL ADVICE by James Patterson and Hal Friedman. It is a true story about Hal's son who suffered with touretts syndrom. Anything he writes is always a good read.

message 5791: by Melissa (new)

Melissa (melitious) Dorie, sorry to hear that. For almost all of my pregnancy, I couldn't read while moving and I had a 40 minute train commute each way. That's when I usually do all of my reading!

So, didn't make it to the library today, so I'll be picking up Steve & Me on Monday. But, I'm still working my way through A Great and Terrible Beauty. The baby and the hubby are going away for the night, so I'll have plenty of time to finish!

message 5792: by Kelly (new)

Kelly | 204 comments Thats great Melissa. Finally some 'me' time huh? Where are they going for the night? Have a great relaxing evening. I remember when my kids were younger and those 'me' times were far and few between so enjoy!

message 5793: by Kelly (last edited Nov 28, 2008 04:35PM) (new)

Kelly | 204 comments Hey Fiona,
I know Ive got the first four of the Harry Potter series. I bought them for my daughter awhile back. Ive never read them but from what I am reading they sound good. I will add them to my TBR list and dig them out of storage when I get home.

message 5794: by Melissa (new)

Melissa (melitious) Yup, four months gone and I'm finally get a "me" night! They're going to his parents' house tonight, because my hubby is going hunting tomorrow. So, I'm definitely planning on taking advantage and actually catching up with everything on my GR groups and reading.

message 5795: by Kellie (new)

Kellie (acountkel) | 992 comments Melissa, sounds like a wondeful evening for you. I know how it is. I cherish those.

Fiona. I have all the Harry Potter books except the last one. I am waiting for my kids before I start. It is so tempting though. I have heard such great things about them....

message 5796: by Kellie (new)

Kellie (acountkel) | 992 comments I can wait cause I have hundreds of other books on Mount TBR.
I think my son might be ready next year to start #1...
I want to enjoy them with them. I almost picked one of the shelf today. It is so very tempting.

message 5797: by Kate (new)

Kate (kathrynlouwca) Fiona- I HATED book 5... Though you hated book 4... that is interesting...

message 5798: by Blake (new)

Blake | 3 comments I'm reading John Fante's Ask the Dust. Lots of scarred and wounded characters. I got the idea of reading it when I learned that the musical group Calexico was inspred to use a variation of the title on their latest Cd. Not a quick read but very interesting.

message 5799: by Melissa (new)

Melissa (melitious) I finished A Great and Terrible Beauty!! Wonderful! Thank you so much Emma! I have to wait a week or two to start Rebel Angels, though, as I am participating in another reading challenge and have to read my books in order.
Next up for me will be A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens.

message 5800: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 510 comments I'm reading the YA book An Abundance of Katherines by John Green. I just started it last night, but it appears so far to be very witty.
