Angela | 1934 comments Yes Laura I agree. I wanted to find something that would be just as good as EL&IC and I do believe I found it! A Tree Grows In Brooklyn is an amazing read so far.

message 5352: by Ann from S.C. (new)

Ann from S.C. | 1395 comments I just finished Yann Martel's THE FACTS BEHIND THE HELSINKI ROCCAMATIOS. It is a book of short stories, and I really enjoyed it. I do not usually read short stories, cause I don't want them to end!!

Angela, I think I will borrow a book from you and start A TREE GROWS IN BROOKLYN. i hope you don't mind.lol

message 5353: by Angela (new)

Angela | 1934 comments Not at all Ann :) I do think you will enjoy it!

message 5354: by Ann from S.C. (new)

Ann from S.C. | 1395 comments I am also reading EAST OF EDEN and I am loving it!!

message 5355: by Angela (new)

Angela | 1934 comments I was thinking about picking it up, but I really was not sure what it was about after reading the summary.

message 5356: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm not too far in East of Eden. I do love Steinbeck.

message 5357: by Kellie (new)

Kellie (acountkel) | 992 comments Laura...
I wanted to thank you for the informatin on the Berg books above.
I am a HUGE Berg fan. I love her writing. She always has some memorable thoughts in each of her books.
I have read Durable Goods and liked it.
I have Joy School and True to Form is on my wishlist.
Maybe I will push Joy School towards the top of the mountain....

message 5358: by Kellie (new)

Kellie (acountkel) | 992 comments Hey Ann....
Are you a speed reader?
You whiz throught these books. I don't know how you do it! When do you read?

Emilee, have you read Steinbeck before?
I am planning on reading E of E this month. Never read a Steinbeck before.
I am a bit apprehensive....The book is thick

message 5359: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Me too Kellie! I love Berg. She's always great for a fast and absorbing read. And I agree you always pick up something from a philosophical/worldview standpoint that is new. And interesting. If you liked Durable Goods, and that young female main character, you'll love the other books in the series. I think she does a FANTASTIC job of writing from a young girl's POV. Really masterful, I think.

I've wondered about Ann too, and well many of you others as well. You've really inspired me to read more and faster, which is great!

message 5360: by Ann from S.C. (new)

Ann from S.C. | 1395 comments I LOVE TO READ!! LOL!!!

I read whenever I can. I am a stay-at-home mom and whenever there is a quiet moment, I read. Also, I have fibromyalgy (sp?) and sometimes, I just have to lay in bed, and rest. and since I don't want to waste time, I read.

I am loving EOE!!! I am so thankful for whoever picked it for this months book read.

I can't help it if you people keep recommending books that I need to read!! But please don't stop!!lol

message 5361: by Kellie (new)

Kellie (acountkel) | 992 comments I am jealous Ann.
I would love to just sit here and read until I have to make dinner.
However, I have to catch up from the time away.
Doing laundry, picking up the house, cleaning hummingbird feeders, clipping and bathing my dog.
I made a list, trying to follow it.
I'll get to read later after the kids are asleep

Maranda (addlebrained_reader) (mannadonn) | 133 comments I am currently reading "A Wolf at the Table" by Augusten Burroughs...I loved Running with Scissors although I'm not sure 'loved' is the right word seeing as how the book was like a train wreck...you know you should stop looking but you just can't help yourself!

message 5363: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments Michelle, I quite like the idea in the book. It is also a simple, fast reading book.
I am really enjoying it for the moment.

Laura, I loved your first quote! That would already make me pick up the book, even if the title doesn't attract me and I don't know what the book is about!

message 5364: by Maureen (new)

Maureen I'm almost finished with Aztec! It has taken me nearly every bit of the two months my book club allotted to read this book. Already thinking of what I can read next. Decisions, decisions!

message 5365: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments Someone told me about this book which seems really original. I only know the Italian title and author:
La centea dei ruotanti by Franco Bonprezzi.
The story is about a village or city made for people in weelchaires. There only live people in weelchaires and everything is made to function for them: everything low, without steps..... One day people who aren't in a weelchair come to the palce and start living there too. But of course everything is made on hight, function and so on for people in a weelchair.

For me it sounds a very original story and very ineresting to see it from the other way.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 1736 comments Still reading Peony in Love, by Lisa See. Really enjoying it so far (I'm about halfway through, I think).

message 5367: by Anya (new)

Anya Hello everyone :-) I know it has been a while since I last stopped by, but you know how life sometimes is. ;-) I managed to finish "The Russian Concubine" though. Have even started a new book in the mean time. I am currently halfway "Love Is a Mix Tape" by Rob Sheffield. A good friend of mine recommended it to me. She even sent me a copy of the book!

Maranda (addlebrained_reader) (mannadonn) | 133 comments Anya,

I love friends like that! I wish I had more friends like that who would not only recommend a book but also give me a copy! Lucky!

message 5369: by Chandani (new)

Chandani (milkduds920) Im reading Huckleberry Finn right now. its a bit more serious than Tom Sawyer, but i like it anyway.

message 5370: by Anya (new)

Anya Maranda, I know I am lucky. Every time I see a package sitting on my doorstep, I thank my lucky stars. The day that I met M is one of the best days of my life. :-) I never ask her to send me books, but she never listens! lol

So what are you reading at the moment? :-)

Maranda (addlebrained_reader) (mannadonn) | 133 comments Anya,

Mine is a few posts up (message5636)...I'm reading A Wolf at the Table by Augusten Burroughs. :-) I actually have several started but that is the one I am focusing on at the moment...unless we want to count my clinical psychology textbook. :-/

PS. I love your name! Anya is my favorite character from Buffy the Vampire Slayer! LOL!!

message 5372: by Anya (new)

Anya - Maranda -

Oops, I didn't see your post there! My mistake. :-) I wasn't paying attention I guess. lol

A Wolf at the Table you say? Is it any good? I can always use new book recommendations. :-)

LOL! Believe it or not, but whenever I talk with someone outside of my country, that is the usual reaction I get when I tell people my name! Eeeeeverybody loves Anya the Demon on Buffy! I have never watched the show myself so I can only wonder if her name is pronounced the way mine is.

message 5373: by Anya (last edited Nov 16, 2008 01:31PM) (new)

Anya Hmm. Then her name is pronounced differently. Mine is something like A-nee-yah. If that makes any sense. :-) The Y is pronounced like the Y in Ying.

Maranda (addlebrained_reader) (mannadonn) | 133 comments That is awesome! I think a lot of people like Anya (pronounced Ah-nya...long a sound like aaaahhhh) because she was honest. She may not have had the most tactful manner to her behavior but she told it like it was. There was no wondering whether she was being truthful or not because you knew she always was. :-) And yes...as Fiona said she had this irrational fear of bunnies! LOL!

A Wolf at the Table is good so far...it's not Running with Scissors but is about Augusten's father. Augusten Burroughs has had an extremely rough life and it's crazy to read about the poisonous people he had to deal with.

And for some reason (I just realized) I seem to be going through a non-fiction phase right now...hmmmm....

message 5375: by Anya (new)

Anya An irrational fear of bunnies?? LMAO!

I think I am going to add Augusten Burroughs to my "To Check out on Amazon" list. His work sounds interesting. :-)

A non-fiction phase? Intriguing... The last non-fiction book I read was about horse riding. Uh yeah, I don't read that many non-fiction books. :P

message 5376: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Wow, never thought of rabbits as vicious before. Well, I guess if your diet was carpet and glue....anybody could be vicious!

Maranda (addlebrained_reader) (mannadonn) | 133 comments Fiona,

LMAO!!!! That is awesome! I guess that rules out ever owning a bunny! I guess Anya from Buffy must have known your pet rabbit!!

Unfortunately, I have never read Watership Down...

message 5378: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) I never have either, but have started it several times (when I was alot younger). I wonder if I should give it another try. It is kind of long though, I think.

Have you read it Fiona?

Maranda (addlebrained_reader) (mannadonn) | 133 comments Anya,

For some reason I just finished the Lynne Spears memoir and now I'm reading an Augusten Burroughs memoir and just ordered Kitchen Confidential and Eat, Pray, Love...both memoirs/non-fiction. Weird...I hadn't even noticed it until now...

message 5380: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) I feel that cold owl eye stare.....

I'm trying to figure out a curse word that is p and 2 letters. I don't get it. That is a puzzle. Is it a British curse word??

Maranda (addlebrained_reader) (mannadonn) | 133 comments Wow...interesting reason for parents to be up in arms...I have heard things about the cartoon...creepy...okay...irrational fear of bunnies is officially (at least in my mind) RATIONAL!

message 5382: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Is the last letter s?

Maranda (addlebrained_reader) (mannadonn) | 133 comments She gets a 10 just for trying to murder people!!!

message 5384: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 437 comments This discussion about bunnies is interesting. I had a couple of pet bunnies when I was younger. However, now I have a fear of them. They tend to end up in my dreams as vampires or demons. After back surgery and while doped with morphine, there were bunnies chasing me. My husband found that hilarious. I have had other bunny dreams, especially after reading S King or vampire books.

I'm reading Love in the Time of Cholera right now. I'm not that crazy about it. I don't really like any of the characters, so it's hard to keep reading.

Maranda (addlebrained_reader) (mannadonn) | 133 comments Wow Lisa,

Well...I guess if you are doped up on morphine anything can happen!

I have heard wonderful things about Love in the Time of Cholera! It's on my TBR list...That's too bad you aren't enjoying it...

message 5386: by Chandani (new)

Chandani (milkduds920) MORPHINE IS HEROIN.

message 5388: by Laura (new)

message 5397: by Joanie (new)

Joanie | 714 comments I finally started East of Eden but I'm also reading Snuff-it's a 7 day book from the library so I have to get it done-it's a riot so far and less than 200 pages so I should be able to finish in time.

message 5398: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) I have a really good new one: Becoming a Tiger. How Baby Animals Learn to Live in the Wild. Its a mixture of science and observations from animal professionals. Its quite amusing and not at all a heavy read.
