message 5202: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Has anyone read The Almost Moon - Alice Sebold?

message 5203: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) I am on p145 at the moment, but wondering if its worth carrying on. I have had some good reviews on the book and some that are not so good.

GRRRRRRRrr, no idea what I should do. Might see what I feel 2morrow.

message 5204: by Ann from S.C. (last edited Nov 12, 2008 02:51PM) (new)

Ann from S.C. | 1395 comments I liked THE LOVELY BONES. I have not read THE ALMOST MOON, but I will have to look it up. And I liked LUCKY.

message 5205: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Its meant to be like The Lovely Bones. I also have Lucky her non fiction book (which I think is about her when she was a kid).

message 5206: by Jamie (new)

Jamie Fiona (eye) - I really liked Lucky. It was very well written and an interesting, yet sad, account of what happened to her.

message 5207: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Jaime, I am meant to be readin that for my 1st swap challenge lol.

message 5208: by Maria (new)

Maria (minks05) | 481 comments Alethea, what do you think of The Mysteries of PGH? it's on my TBR, and living in PGH, i'm tempted to pick it up soon. wanted to know what someone thought of it first, though...

message 5209: by Maria (new)

Maria (minks05) | 481 comments NO.

i loved The Lovely Bones, but hated, HATED, the Almost Moon.

one of the few books i've started but never finished, it was that bad...

message 5210: by Kellie (new)

Kellie (acountkel) | 992 comments The Almost Moon was very disturbing. I think the author has some issues she needs to deal with. Maybe thru therapy.
What kind of person would seriously write a book about killing her mother?
I had a real hard time with it....
I also read The Lovely Bones...Didn't like that one either.

message 5211: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) I liked The Lovely Bones. It was creepy and difficult at times, but it kept you involved. Haven't read anything else by her.

Hope you enjoy your trip, Kellie. My husband would be so jealous, he's always wanted to see the launch. Are you driving, and if so, how long of a trip is that for you (from NC, right)?

message 5212: by Kellie (new)

Kellie (acountkel) | 992 comments Sitting in the van as we speak (I mean type)
We are going to stop in Savannah tonight and head to the Cape in the morning. It's about an 5 hour trip total. We are splitting it in half.
The launch is at 8PM. Can't wait to see a night launch.
It's going to light up the sky!!

message 5213: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Have you seen the launch in the daytime? Sounds neat! I hope you all have a really good time. Good for you that you can get internet the whole time you're travelling - how are you doing that BTW? I'll have to remember that for my next trip! :)

message 5214: by Kellie (new)

Kellie (acountkel) | 992 comments My husband and son saw it last year during the day. They had a great time!
My husband has a broadband hookup on his computer.
We just checked into the hotel.
Phew I'm bushed.

message 5215: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (missfryer) | 453 comments I got on and there were 100 new posts! HOLY BANANAS!
I'm reading several things....

I am getting kinda bored with them though. That's why I went to the Library! I am starting a Sookie Stackhouse book. :)

Carrie (missfryer) | 453 comments ASHLEY: I didn't like New Moon as much either!

message 5222: by Darla (new)

Darla (sylvanfox) | 573 comments I just finished 'The Cider House Rules'. While it was something I probably never would have picked up on my own, I really enjoyed it. Next up: 'The Other Boleyn Girl'. I've wanted to check it out for awhile, so, now is as good a time as ever! :)

message 5223: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1826 comments Finished The Second Coming of Lucy Hatch (the first of a 4 part series...the library only has the fourth ugh...but I picked this up for only a dollar at goodwill so I can't really complain) it was very good...I got a new book crush on one of the characters (Ash Farrell...hot musician/handyman). Needless to say I look forward to reading the rest of the books in the series.

Next I think I'll be reading The Crazy School another fall challenge book...I enjoyed Field of Darkness more than I expected so I'm excited to read this follow up.

message 5224: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie | 413 comments Right now I'm reading The Blonde Geisha. I got it online and I didn't know it was an erotic novel, needless to say its not very erotic.

message 5225: by Catherine (new)

Catherine | 175 comments I just finished On Chesil Beach in about a day, so much for my portable train reading.

I'm reading a chapter of The Historian every time I take a break from my annotated bibliography though!

message 5226: by Kate (new)

Kate (kathrynlouwca) I never heard of the Gemma Doyle trilogy until I got on here... now I want to read it! I am still reading The Luxe.

message 5227: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

message 5228: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments I think The lovely bones was one of the first books I ever didn't like at all!!! and I am neve going to even think about reading another one of her. I only liked the cover of it.

Kelli, how great that you have your laptop with you. It feels like a live update we get from you!

message 5229: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Yeah - "You know you're addicted to GR/TNBBC when...."

LOL

message 5230: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (mcd724) | 117 comments I wasn't a fan of The Lovely Bones, but think Lucky is a book every teenage girl should read. But Almost Moon was one of the few books I just couldn't finish and have absolutely no desire what-so-ever to finish...ever...

message 5231: by Donna (new)

Donna (dfiggz) | 1626 comments I just brought LVOELY BONES for a $1 at a Rummage Sale. I don't know much about it but one day I will get to it. I am still reading New Moon and I am just not into it but I have to finish it!!!

message 5232: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (angelashly) | 160 comments I picked up Skipping Christmas last night. I am already on page 85. It is a cute quick read. I wanted to start getting myself in the Christmas spirit since it is almost Thanksgiving.

message 5233: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) I only buy or swap books that I want now. I swapped Lucky back in 2006.

message 5234: by Donna (new)

Donna (dfiggz) | 1626 comments I brought a ton of Santa books!! I am the Christmas Dork!

message 5235: by Kellie (new)

Kellie (acountkel) | 992 comments Yes everyone, I am addicted to goodreads because I'm in the van on the way to Cocoa Beach Florida chit chatting with my friends.
It's sunny and 76 here. We are almost there.
Just went over a bridge where I can see Kennedy Space center.

message 5236: by Paula (new)

Paula | 1098 comments I listened to "Devil in the White City" a while back and thought it was a very good "book". I then was curious about the serial killer and found a NF book about him but it didn't offer much more than was in "White City". What a terrible person!

message 5237: by Paula (new)

Paula | 1098 comments I read "Almost Moon". It's a very disturbing book. I almost put it down after a chapter or two but decided to give it a few more pages. After finishing the book, it gives you the whys and wherefores (don't want to give anything away) and after digesting it a couple of days I decided that it was a good book. It's one of those that stays with you and is a difficult read. It's not for everyone.

message 5238: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Thanks Paula. Will carry on with it.

message 5239: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments Thanks Kellie, you are a great live-reporter!

The reason I ever bought The lovely bones: I liked the cover.

message 5240: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (mcd724) | 117 comments The Last Noel by Michael Malone and The Christmas Train by David Baldacci are two of my favorite Christmas books...already in the stack to read over the break...

message 5241: by Joseph (new)

Joseph (jazzman) I may have mentioned this in a previous post, but in case I haven't....
A perfect Thanksgiving and Christmas story is Truman Capote's classic,"A Christmas Memory." A feel good ,yet ultimately sad story,it is miles ahead of the typical holiday feel good story.
If you are lucky enough to find an old video starring Geraldine Page as cousin Sook, the main character, you will be seeing a truly moving film. When you add in the fact that Truman does the voiceover in that wonderful falsetto, you will appreciate how perfectly it is written
When I was teaching senior high, I showed that version to all my kids. Both the highest and lowest in ability.I soon learned to leave the lights off for a few minutes so as not to embarass my students. Most had tears in their eyes.
Happy Holidays to all my friends( and enemies.)

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 1736 comments I finished Tears of the Giraffe last night, and really enjoyed it.

Not sure what's next up - it might be Peony in Love by Lisa See.

message 5243: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Sounds beautiful, Joseph, thanks for that. I'll def. be on the lookout for the film & book.

I just love teachers.

message 5244: by Kellie (new)

Kellie (acountkel) | 992 comments Joseph
What a nice comment. I'll keep my eye out for that one.
Susanna
I loved Tears of the Giraffe.
The Precious series is such fun!

message 5245: by Maria (new)

Maria (minks05) | 481 comments FINALLY finished Company of Liars.

wrote a review, and like i said there, i'm not sure how highly i'd recommend this one. i enjoyed the middle part of the book (from pages 150 to about 400) but it took a little bit to get moving, and i really felt like the ending left a lot to be desired.

gong to try and find Loving Frank tomorrow for my library book group on Monday (running a bit late with that), but not sure what i'll move on to after that.

Seth, a thanksgiving 'co-incidental bookery" it is!! Let me know as we get closer if you are still on target for it. I am looking foward to reading Of Human Bondage. I havent read anything by Sommerset yet.

message 5247: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) My mom loved that (OHBondge.) Is it another depressing one though? Because she loved it so much, and usually our tastes are similar.

message 5248: by Lori, Super Mod (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 10621 comments Mod
Well, Laura, I will be sure to tell you all about it when I start. I havent a clue really. But Im looking foward to reading it!

message 5249: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Thanks, Lori! Still looking for a follow-up to Extremely Loud. I am currently bookless :( I guess I should try Historian and Sawtelle and see if one of them sticks, but ... sigh.

message 5250: by Jill (new)

Jill (wanderingrogue) | 329 comments I just got my copy of How to Win Every Argument: The Use and Abuse of Logic in the mail. I'm excited to get started. Not only does it acquaint you with logical fallacies, it shows you how to deliberately misuse them to win arguments. Not that I ever would, of course, but it's fun to know how to be evil. ;)
