Kate (kathrynlouwca) I have never heard of the Wind Done Gone. How is it different? What is it about?

message 5152: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1826 comments It's an unauthorized parody told through the eyes of Scarlet's illegitimate half-sister (her father and mammy's child).

message 5153: by Kate (new)

Kate (kathrynlouwca) Oh, that is interesting. Hmm... did you like it?

JG (Introverted Reader) I finished Tithe and I've got a good start on The Devil In The White City. It feels like I'm a few years behind in reading this, but it's surprisingly good. I generally find non-fiction to be too dry, but so far I'm doing fine with this one.

message 5155: by A (new)

A (aarrghhh) | 32 comments I am supposed to be reading The Mysteries of Pittsburgh for The Critical Beatdown Book Club but I got *hooked* on Atlas Shrugged. Utterly addicted and now I want to read everything Ayn Rand ever wrote.

message 5156: by Tricia (new)

Tricia Mcwilliams | 28 comments I'm reading Thank You For All Things by Sandra Kring. It's a bit disturbing in places but I'm really enjoying the book.

Kellie, thanks for recommending Those Who Saved Us. I will put that on my TBR list as well. Nice and brisk in NC isn't it? Nice reading weather.

I just finished How to Be Good and loved it. I really enjoy Brit humor!

message 5158: by Cheri Howard (last edited Nov 12, 2008 07:02AM) (new)

Cheri Howard I'm reading The Anubis Gates by Tim Powers and loving it!

message 5159: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1826 comments Kathryn - it was ok...an interesting take but not my favorite of the Gone With The Wind Spin-offs.

I tried to read that one biu could pass from the firts 20 pages. I gave up.

message 5161: by Marsha (new)

Marsha JG- I'm reading Devil in the White City right now too. It's very good. I'm only about 100 pages in though. I've been busy lately.

message 5162: by Cheri Howard (new)

Cheri Howard bnoir-

That's too bad! I can understand that though, the 1st part is difficult to get into — but it picks up after that, I swear!

message 5163: by Donna (new)

Donna (dfiggz) | 1626 comments Have you ever wanted to read a book real bad but when you brought it (or borrowed) you weren't really in the mood to read it? That is how I am with Two Lives. I am sure it is a great book I am just not getting into it right now so I will have to take it out from the library at a later time.

I am now reading part 2 of my girl's book club which is New Moon by Stephanie Meyer. I heard it was better than the first and I was not so crazy about Twilight so I only hope for the best!

message 5164: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (angelashly) | 160 comments Donna- I am doing that right now with The Book Thief. Also I didn't like New Moon that much, but I loved Twilight.

message 5165: by Donna (new)

Donna (dfiggz) | 1626 comments At least I am not alone but FYI Book Thief is a quick read but if you're not in the mood well then...

Good Luck!

message 5166: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) I loved The Book Thief. I have a copy for myself lol. I also have Stepehnie Meyer's books on my TBR lol.

Yes it is a bit nippy here. We are headed to Florida today. Going to see the space shuttle launch.
It's warm there!

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 1736 comments I finished The Three Musketeers last night (I enjoyed it, though not quite as much as when I was 14), and am on to Tears of the Giraffe by Alexander McCall Smith. I am quite enjoying it, too - I really liked the first volume of the series, too.

message 5169: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments Susanna, the whole serie of the NO1 ladies' detective agency!

message 5170: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Donna - Yes - it happened last night with Dead Until Dark. I was really looking forward to it, but it just didn't grab me. So I think I'll take it back to the library. Not sure what to read next. Still working on Jonathan Strange, but always nice to have two going...

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 1736 comments Haven't read the rest of the series, yet, Jeane - though I shall certainly keep an eye out for it.

message 5172: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) *Goes to check the library catalog*

message 5173: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) I don't know, I think part of my problem is the last book I finished (yesterday) was Extremely Loud. It's hard to follow that one, I'm finding. Maybe the Historian? History of Love? Maybe Edgar Sawtelle?

message 5174: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments haha, this whispering conversation is really funny and so image full in my had now!

message 5175: by Jamie (new)

Jamie Jeane - I've got The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series on my TBR list but I'm not sure how much I want to read it now that I've read McCall Smith's The Sunday Philosophy Club, which I really didn't like. Have you read that one? I'm just not sure how they compare. SPC was boring, went off on tangents, and the writing was pretentious, but this may be due to the subject matter.

message 5176: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments Jamie, I haven't read it yet. Mainly because it seems to be a lot diffeent from the ladies detective agency serie. I would give it a try. They read sooooo fast.

message 5177: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments Fiona, don't know if it is good. I think it is not from the detective serie. I am also not sure about the othe books he writes, but I think I will try them just because the detective serie was really good.

message 5178: by Catherine (new)

Catherine | 175 comments I just started On Chesil Beach because the historian is way too big to carry on the train. Incredibly awkward, but I like it so far.

I read Saturday and enjoyed it, but read First Love, Last Rites (my first McEwan) and started crying on the train. I don't know how I feel about him.

message 5179: by Donna (new)

Donna (dfiggz) | 1626 comments Laura, I've read all those but Edgar. I liked the Historian it is pretty cool to know the history of Vampires on such. As for the History of Love, I really enjoyed her qwriting and it is a very fast read but it may not be what you are expecting.

message 5180: by Kellie (new)

Kellie (acountkel) | 992 comments Jamie
Don't give up on the #1 Ladies Detective Agency!
I have read several in this series and I love them. This, I've heard, are his best.

I've read The Philosophy Club and didn't care for it.

message 5181: by Cheryl S. (new)

Cheryl S. | 22 comments Been re-reading old favorites lately. Right now am in the middle of Pat Conray's "Lords of Discipline" and am enjoying it the second, or maybe it's the third, time around.

message 5182: by Kellie (new)

Kellie (acountkel) | 992 comments I have Lords of Discipline... Haven't read it yet.
Is it good?

message 5183: by Catherine (new)

Catherine | 175 comments I liked Saturday, but fizzled out on Atonement first. I want to try it again, but I really had no time/attention span for it then.

Fiona, you're right - I probably wouldn't pick something so short normally either, but as The Historian is 600+ pages, I thought it would be nice "commuting" reading.

message 5184: by Ann from S.C. (new)

Ann from S.C. | 1395 comments I am enjoying all 3 books I am reading. TWILIGHT is awesome. I really like ANIMAL FARM. And the short stories by Yann Martel are great!!

message 5185: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Fi, what have u read from Crime & Thriller books? That I might be interested in lol.

message 5186: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Donna - meaning the History of Love is not so much a love story? Is that you meant "not what you're expecting"? I want to be grabbed from the start (like Extremely Loud), but want something a little meaty. I'm hoping the Historian is more than just the history of vampires. 600 pages of JUST the history of V. doesn't sound so intriguing. But skimming thru it, it looks good.

I hate when I can't pick my next!

message 5187: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) You've Got Mail, Fiona.

message 5188: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Fi, from the list you have commented on (my TBR list). What would u recommend I read after Faithless (Karin Slaughter) & The Almost Moon (Alice Sebold).

I have The Four Last Things - Andrew Taylor

message 5189: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Laura, which Fiona are u talkin about hun?

message 5190: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Oops, sorry, the owl eyed one

:)

Sorry Fiona #2.

message 5191: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Call me Titch lol. I call Fiona#1 - Fi lol xx

message 5192: by Donna (new)

Donna (dfiggz) | 1626 comments Well the Historian is not just about Vampires there us more to it and it is a good read.

The History of Love is kinda of a Love story though not so mushy like I really don't know how to put it but the two main charas are a young ambitous girl and a lonely retired locksmith. It doesn't sound so good but like I said I really enjoyed the writing in itself.

message 5193: by Emma (new)

Emma Blue (litlover) | 2389 comments I'm finished Frankenstein! On to Suite Scarlett (a break from the classics) and then to The Hobbit!

message 5194: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) The locksmith is the guy @ the beginning, right? The old guy knocking on his radiator to the guy downstairs?

message 5195: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) YAY Gemma! I might pick up the Hobbit and read it with you so I can share in your joyousness. I loved it so much. Even have the giant illustrated one (begged my parents for it in M.S.)

message 5196: by Emma (new)

Emma Blue (litlover) | 2389 comments :D

I should finish Suite Scarlett soon, it should be a quick and enjoyable read.

I'm sure I'll love The Hobbit!

message 5197: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) I sincerely hope that you do since I've been the Official Hobbit Nag. Hob-Nag. That's me.

message 5198: by Emma (new)

Emma Blue (litlover) | 2389 comments LOL! I'm The Gemma Doyle nag, but you already knew that. :D

message 5199: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) :)

message 5200: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments My friend really liked 'ON chesil beach' and I almost bought it in Edinburgh, but it seems so short for the price.

Go Jamie, the books of the ladies' detective are really so light and fast reads and make you laugh too. Everybody adores Madame Botswana(or whatever her exact name was) after reading it.

The historian is a bit heavy but if you manage to finish it you end up with one big story of the beginning, two stories further and they all come together to the end. It's good! catherine, it might be good to read something light in between, more chance you will keep liking it. I loved the deep red cover my book had!!!
