Roger Wow, I can't believe anyone who loves this site would ever defend Stephanie Meyer. When the first movie came out, they asked her who her influences were in the vampire genre and she said she had never read any vampire books and came up with the story on her own. Really? She really expected anyone with any supernatural fiction history to buy the "originality" of her storyline just because she put more glitter on her vampires than Ke$ha? She doesn't just insult the minds of her readers with her 3rd grade writing level, she insults the entire genre of supernatural fiction.

Library Lady 📚 Roger--I think i'm going to get along with you just fine.
:D

Molly Poynter I admit I'm not that interested in the Twilight series myself, although the books weren't THAT bad to read. But when the movies starting coming out it totally ruined any previous enjoyment of the series. Now it just seems embarassing and silly. However, I loved The Host by Stephenie Meyer, as it's completely different from the Twilight series, and I hope they never make a movie out of it because then it will be ruined too

She really said she's never read any vampire books? Well then, that's a horse of a different color!

Library Lady 📚 They are making a movie from The Host. She's also writing The Host 2. I dont know the title, though. i didnt read it, b/c my sister told me it was exactly like twilight but aliens instead of vamps. Not true?

Studios realize they are going to make most of their money out of kids 12-16 in things like this so they took an already juvenile story and took the rest of the brain out to show a bunch of pretty people in oddly-lit post-production altered sets. I'm suprised twilight isn't 90 minutes of Bella and Cullen staring at each other longingly....oh wait, it was.

Library Lady 📚 serioulsy? edward looked like he was gonna puke the entire first 2 movies. i saw no longing in those sparkling eyes.

message 209: by Roger (new) - rated it 2 stars

Roger Wow, now that you mention it, I wonder if Robert Pattinson was thinking that every minute he was on screen was another Oscar-worthy roll he was never going to see :)

message 210: by Molly (new) - rated it 3 stars

Molly Poynter Not at all true! I'm baffled that she'd say that, I mean the aliens taking over the world are reminiscent of Invasion of The Body Snatchers (although not exactly because there's a lot more to it than just that), which hardly has anything to do with Twilight. You should really give reading it a try, you might be surprised.

I REALLY wish they wouldn't make a movie of it though, I hate when books are made into movies. It ruins my entire perception of how I pictured the story, which is what I love about books, u know?

Library Lady 📚 Yeah. The cast of Twilight was poorly chosen (except bella, i think she was fine). I can't read a book after i've seen the movie.

message 212: by Roger (new) - rated it 2 stars

Roger Yeah but once you watch the Runaways, you won't see her as Bella anymore :)

The Twilight movies really are terrible. Kristen Stewart never strikes me as a good actress in any movie she's been in, and Robert Pattinson looked downright miserable, or 'about to puke' as you put it Lena, lol. Although I've seen him in some other movies and he's not as bad I don't think. Water For Elephants was pretty good, which I guess is an exception in the books-shouldn't-be-movies rule

Was it really good? I was dubious, although the actors seem to have had a good time making it. I like Reese Witherspoon in just about everything she was in. (Although I am ashamed and scared of losing my man card for saying that in regards to Legally Blonde)

It was really good, you definitely need to see it! Reese Witherspoon was excellent, as was Robert Pattinson, and I loved the story line. I hadn't seen a good movie in a LONG time before Water for Elephants. I also really want to read the book now

HA! Legally Blonde was kind of funny, so don't be ashamed ;-)

I'll have to check it out, but we seem to have gotten off topic. Twilight sucks. :)

Molly Poynter Yes Indeed!! Down with Twilight!!

Library Lady 📚 I have the Runaways. It made me get a girl crush on Kristen Stewart. I sort of love her, so I can't say anything bad about her playing Bella. I heard she refused to say some of the lines they gave her, b/c she said they were too corny. So...IDK. i stand by that she's a good actress, in whatever role.

message 220: by Roger (new) - rated it 2 stars

Roger I had considered the following for a t-shirt although it seemed far too wordy:

Anita's Edward
+ Bella's Edward
----------------
Dead Sparkly Vampire

Makes me wonder the crap she turned down due to what was left in the film...

What say you to all the talk that she is incapable of moving her face to emote?

Fair enough, although I can't say I really care for her myself. She just seems like she's kind of an insignificant actress: Not really bad, but not really good either.
I haven't actually seen The Runaways, is it good? Isn't Dakota Fanning in it too?

Library Lady 📚 Yes, Dakota fanning is in it. i love movies about music, what can i say. it's my weakness.

Roger--Maybe she got Botox, lol...I saw Speak, based on the book by Laurie halse Anderson while i was stuck in a hotel over spring break. I happened to see that Kristen Stewart was in it, so i watched. She does move her face & emote in that movie, but it's quite old. I'm not sure about "Into the Wild" i can't remember. Also, i'm going to have to check out the movie w/ her and james gandolfini, where she plays a stripper. er, ex stripper, maybe :)

Roger I wouldn't call 22 retirement age regardless of when you start out. Things don't start to get wrinkly till you're in your late 20's and that's only if you spend too much time outside.

message 229: by Roger (new) - rated it 2 stars

Roger I may postulate there are venues available for the long-term stripping enthusiast that wishes to perform after her prime. Mostly they are found in smaller mid-west towns where talent is not based so much on looks as number of intact limbs and teeth. Hard to pole dance with a hook for a hand. Just remember, Lena started the discussion of strippers and Molly played devil's advocate. I'm just furthering a logical discussion :)

Elizabeth Rose Over all, I did not like this book. A lot of things bothered me about it; mostly the fact that the whole book is one huge metaphor for a high school girl who wants to loose her virginity. But I don't think that Meyer needs to be insulted just because I didn't like her story.

I do agree with the fact that vampires were originally supposed to be evil demons, but I feel like I have to give Meyer credit for changing things up a bit and getting creative. (Even though the creativity turned out to be kinda terrible.) I'm not a fan of tradition so I liked that I was reading about something new.

My real problem with this book was the characters. Bella annoyed me very much and Edward was portrayed as "the perfect boyfriend" when really he is FAR from perfect AND there is no such thing as a perfect person.

I also think it's kinda sad that Bella needs a boy in her life in order to survive.

message 231: by Calli (new) - rated it 1 star

Calli I feel like the whole appeal of vampires is the dangerous edge. I know that sounds unhealthy, but it's true. Besides, who reads books about vampires looking for something realistic or in any way applicable to real life?

Stephanie Meyer destroyed vampires by making them human-shaped balls of glitter. Or disco balls. Whichever you prefer.

Making vampires sparkly, weepy, emo, no-one-understands-my-black-and-tortured-soul stalkers is like taking a ferociously awesome wildcat, neutering and declawing it, and making it your housepet named "Mr. Chuckles".

It's sad.

Please stop making me depressed, Stephanie Meyer. Please.

Roger Calli wrote: "I feel like the whole appeal of vampires is the dangerous edge. I know that sounds unhealthy, but it's true. Besides, who reads books about vampires looking for something realistic or in any way ..."

There have been dozens of dissertations done on the appeal of vampires in fiction. All agree on the sexual appeal of the bodily fluid exchange, much like a Succubus. Beyond that, the predatory nature of the vampire appeals to the dominant nature of some readers, appealing to the animal inside taking possession so totally over another person. Most, however, seem to associate more with the victim, being dominated by an overwhelming, and in the last 100 years or so, exceedingly beautiful force. Unable to control one's actions means being able to submit to baser desires. "It wasn't me writhing on that bed, I was under the spell of the vampire. Please don't leave me Jonathan. Not to mention, I only got one vampire, you got three of his daughters."

The books were so bad that I never really wanted to see the TV show. Maybe I'll try to watch it if I get really bored. Isn't it like a vampire soap-opera kind of show? Although now that I think about it, most of them are so I guess that was kind of stating the obvious. Thanks for the tip though, I'll give it a try :-)

Nurlely Anastaisa wrote: "umm yea it was the next vampire thing after i saw twighlight...well if you saw vampire diaries u would know that in that show the vampires burn under the sunlight... "

With vampires who wear 'protection' rings as exception.

Library Lady 📚 Wow, i missed a lot of great conversation, lol...
Yes, I loved Dakota Fanning in Twilight. I stand by Kristen Stewart. She can't help it if her lines suck and the character is sappy.

Edward as the 'perfect' guy...lord help us all! I hate that about romance novels. I can't read them b/c it seems like there is always some horrible, misogynistic guy who is supposed to be totally perfect while the girl is some pathetic, whiney, clumsy, awkward idiot...sound familiar? haha. Edward was so controlling I started really hating him...then there was the whole 'i love you so i must leave you!' thing. WAY annoyed me.
I'm not a fan of VD, but Damon is hot.
Okay, i think i caught up! :D

Lena
The Superiors

Gregory Stanton The way I see it is...first of all it makes no sense to say the sparkling is to show the good in a vampire. That's clear because the sparkling proves to people that they are a vampire (I don't understand the connection but whatevs). Now I've never really thought too much about it, since I too think its silly. But thinking about it...I suspect that the vampires sparkle because it reveals something hidden, not just that they are a vampire. Sparkling is a type of illumination, it reveals truth. What's that truth? I suppose that can be debated. Personally, I suspect Meyer's change was to allow people to see through the vampire, not as if their a ghost nor like there are huge holes in their skin, but to see what's really there: emptiness.
Something is missing. Call it life, a heart, a pulse...vampires are not whole beings, hence their constant need for blood.

Dunno, I actually liked her in "Panic Room" and I think she makes a apt Bella.
Can't say much about Pattinson, though, I know him only from the first "twilight" movie and that isn't exactly a acting recommendation.

Well, Dakota Fanning, as somebody put it in another forum, is an amazing actress, and that since she's been like eight or so, I guess she's the next acting wunderkind after Jody Foster.

message 248: by Kenny (new) - rated it 5 stars

Kenny This series was my very first vampire book series...and I fell in love with them! Although the sparkling in the sun thing is pretty stupid they still are amazing books and movies. And they are orginal vampires.. if you look at almost any vampire series they are all so different. Blue Bloods are fallen angels from the sky. House of Night its like a change in any teenager's life. And Twilight's vampires sparkle.

message 249: by Aden (new) - rated it 4 stars

Aden Twilight is an okay movie but what kind of vampire only sparkles in the sun I mean really if that's what it takes to be a vampire than probably everyone can be a vampire.
