Vampires don't sparkle.

Library Lady 📚 @Lindis--thanks! I love B&N's big leather bound collections. I have several, and knowing how long Rice's novels are, it's probably a good investment!

@Nurlely--I agree they cannot go out in daylight. The way it's portrayed in movies/tv, where they turn to dust or their skin peels off in seconds looks totally fake and cheesy to me. But they are definitely nocturnal/creatures of the night. I have read Charlaine Harris's books, and I think her vampires are well done.

You should also check out "The Secret History of Vampires: Their Multiple Forms and Hidden Purposes" by Claude Lecouteux. I find it very interesting and informative regarding vampire origins. And for a laugh you should try The Harvard Lampoon's "Nightlight," which is a parody of Twilight. Good stuff

I totally agree with your comment...who are they trying to attract and mesmerize, Ru Paul? Totally gay. Instead of the slogan "Diamonds are forever" it should be "Sparkly vampires are forever." Maybe they'll attract rich housewives or something

Library Lady 📚 @Molly--I can't stop laughing!

I mean don't get me wrong I don't exactly LOVE sparkling Vampires either, but writing is a creative outlet and noone can say Vampires are only this way or only that way; and as much as I wish they were real, they are not. So you have no grounds to tell Stephenie Meyer that her sparkly Vampires are "wrong" or "unaccurate".

Nurlely Gerd wrote: "It probably holds a Gem of Amara. :D "

Yup...probably. But in VD, more people (or vamps) seem to have their special protection rings.

Yep. CH books are awesome, as long as she could hold herself and finish the story, not extending it to more sequels. But I love the series mostly because of Eric, the evil but loving vampire...:)

Andre and Sophie ooooh! I love the series mostly 'cus of Eric too! Well, actually I got hooked on Alexander Skarsgard. Then I was like: "Oh snap! I have to read the books!"

And by God, he did not let me down! Neither did Alexander Skarsgard on the show!

I totally agree with you, Twilight was too predictable. It would have been...I don't know...better? If Bella wasn't so..."I can't anything without my two hotties to push me around"

couldnt agree more with you, but it seems in this discussion there are alot of vampire experts, some of the posters sound as if they met vampires in real life and know first hand what a vampire should and shouldn't be like. :)

That's true. But in writing a fantasy novel, the writer is asking the reader to suspend disbelief. And asking people to believe vampires sparkle in the sun is asking a lot for some. However, the other day I saw a middle school girl with a bag that said "I ♥ guys who sparkle" so obviously some people didnt mind!

message 114: by Dennis (new) - rated it 2 stars

Dennis Mcfarland YES! If you are going to screw with the normal vampire mythology...at least give us some coherent explanation why your vampires are different. I dont particularly agree that they have to be "evil" (Blade is awesome...and not "evil"), but they certainly should not be vegetarian pansies either!

Library Lady 📚 Agreed. I can believe a lot, but sparkles, well...

The Superiors is my guy-centric vampire novel. The vampires in there are very traditional.

Booklover baker I like where the vampires can tolarate sunlight but yes sparkling in the sun is too much. But you have to give props to originality.

Maritza Dennis wrote: "YES! If you are going to screw with the normal vampire mythology...at least give us some coherent explanation why your vampires are different. I dont particularly agree that they have to be "evil" ..."

they are not vegetarians! they choose not to murder people and suck the blood of animals. since when is an animal a vegetable??

Maritza Lady Alice wrote: "Like you both - Maritza and Lindis! good point."

thank you!!

Library Lady 📚 @Maritza--The 'vegetarian' label always makes me laugh. But I guess they need SOME kind of word for it.

message 121: by Marsha (new) - rated it 3 stars

Marsha Regarding the "vegetarian" label - that makes me cringe since I'm a vegan (vegetarian when circumstances necessitate). Yes, she does need a label for their choice to not murder humans - and I can't think of a better one off hand, but still....ugh...

message 122: by Sophia (new) - rated it 1 star

Sophia I agree; not eating humans should not be considered vegetarian *pause* cause it isn't...

Library Lady 📚 Yep, vampires eat people and that's a fact, lol.

Lindis Russell Maybe they should have called themselves, "Animaltarians"? "Crittereaters"?

Kaylee~ yelloe

Well, she could hardly write them as sucking on apples and pears ... or make nocturnal raids on cabbage farms. :D

Library Lady 📚 more than vampires who eat squirrels?

message 131: by Lindis (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lindis Russell Lena wrote: "more than vampires who eat squirrels?"

Well, that's one way to control the squirrel population, probably put them on the endangered species list. I'd think it would take a lot of squirrels to fill up a vampire! he he he : )

Kaylee~ ????????????

Nurlely @ Kayle: You should have written down why you are confused. It will help..

Kaylee~ ik......im too tired.......

message 135: by Emily (new) - rated it 3 stars

Emily Rudder other vamps may not sparkle.... but twilight ones do!

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks

I just finished The Immortal Life of H.L. and the original cells were very hard so of course I thought of Twilight and how vampires have very hard skin. In other vampire books is it common for the vampires to have hard skin? I had never really noticed this in my reading.

message 137: by [deleted user] (new)

I love the idea that vampires sparkle. I think it was totally BRILLIANT. Simply creative genius on her part.

Another vampire who eats small animals is
Ana in Lifeblood. Are there other vampires that eat animals? I just thought of Bubba in Charlaine Harris books, he likes cats especially. I think Ana had to resort to eating a cat also. Dead Until DarkLifeblood

Denesha Vampires shouldn't sparkle.Seems girly and wierd to me.

Seems like angels to me. Besides what is wrong with being girly? I like weird too.

Did you know that angels sparkle? Bet you didn't!

Library Lady 📚 Vampires as hard as granite. Sounds great for all that cuddling they do...as well as the sub-zero temperature of their bodies. cozy.

Kendra, you must have been so cute! Sorry she ruined your fav past-pastime ...

I think that the fine, white, porcelaine-like skin described in many books just became SPARKLY fine, white, porcelaine-like skin in her mind and that its not THAT far off from others. When I read the book, I already did not care for it so didn't focus on sparklies since I had so many other gripes by then. I tried book 2 then quit. I watched the movie and wasn't thrilled either so I quit. More power to Ms. Meyers yada yada yada but give me more Chloe Neill or Jeaniene Frost!

message 142: by Library Lady 📚 (last edited May 18, 2011 04:16PM) (new) - rated it 2 stars

Library Lady 📚 @Cindi--that's funny. A lot of people got mad about the sparkles. I thought they were even worse in the movie. It looks like their skin is full of holes and light is shining out from within!

Sophia Lena wrote: "I thought they were even worse in the movie. It looks like their skin is full of holes and light is shining out from within! "

No, it seemed as if Edward had bathed in glitter. Seriously, it seemed as if there was some sort of malfunction with the glitter bottle when he did his art homework...

message 144: by Cindi (new) - rated it 3 stars

Cindi Snicker, snicker, you guys! I love glitter and beads and fringe and other so very classy things that I am surprised I didn't like it just for the sparkly stuff ;)

Library Lady 📚 The glitter in my head looked better than on the screen. Also, did anyone else want to send Robert Pattinson a razor? He's supposed to be smooth and hard as granite! Not furry! that's jacob's job.

Nurlely Apri wrote: "In my opinion, vampires are supposed to be evil demons. They do not love, they are not kind, and they definitely do not sparkle. It's so hard to find good vampire books, and by that, I mean the one..."

You should try Sookie Stackhouse series. Eric Northman is what you expect of a vampire. Ruthless and cunning. He is in love with a human, but he does not become a lame vampire.
