message 564: by Cecilia (new)

Cecilia Gaerlan (goodreadscomceciliagaerlan) | 2 comments I’m Cecilia Gaerlan, author of the historical novel, In Her Mother’s Image. It is the story of a mother and daughter, Consuelo and Chiquita set during World War II in the Philippines and thirty years later in 1971. The realities of war are seen through the eyes of a headstrong eight-year-old child, Chiquita, who bears witness to an act of betrayal committed by her formidable mother. A betrayal that will be revisited thirty years later when Chiquita goes back to the land of her birth to face the source of her lifelong torment – her own mother.

The novel reveals the horrors of war and its repercussions on a family stretching over a period of three decades. It also depicts the Bataan Death March, the largest surrender of American and Filipino troops in the history of the United States. Approximately 75,000 troops, most of whom were sick and emaciated were forced to surrender to the forces of the Japanese Imperial Army on April 9, 1942. The soldiers were forced to march some 60 miles to their prison camps under extreme conditions- searing heat with no provisions for food, shelter, water or medicine. The soldiers were subjected to physical and mental torture, some of whom were beaten, bayoneted or beheaded. Between 10,000 to 15,000 Filipino soldiers and around 800 American soldiers died during the march. Details of the death march were not revealed to the American public until many months later. But even today, the public remains unaware of the sacrifice of these gallant soldiers, many more of whom died inside the prison camps. In 1946, President Truman rescinded the rights of the Filipino soldiers who served under the U.S. Armed Forces of the Far East. To this day, these men have not received equal rights as their American counterparts.

The following is an excerpt from the novel:

“Blistering winds from the South China Sea sway the giant coconut trees lining the pristine beach while the foam of crashing waves melds with the fine white sand. Darkness creeps into the skies, heralding an impending tropical storm on this December morning. The droning gusts turn somber as the skies open up, yielding a sea of planes emblazoned with the crimson symbol of the rising sun. One by one, in perfect formation, they descend swiftly on this bucolic town like a swarm of hornets about to prey. A child’s tiny feet trample madly on the powdery sand, racing with the wild beating of her heart. Her breathing becomes more rapid, each gasp turning shallow and frantic as the invading horde casts its dark shadow from above. Suddenly, an ear-piercing sound is heard, like an echo of a desperate woman wailing in pain.”

Hi Karen - no, I'm afraid Authors Electric is simply a site to share information about the trials and celebrations of e-publishing. The book review site you need is http://www.indieebookreview.wordpress... It's run by Cally Wight and if you offer a free copy of your book she will put it out to the reviewing team and see if anyone fancies reviewing it. You can also offer to review books for the site - you simply have to provide sample reviews to show that you can do it to a professional standard.
Hope that's helpful!

How do we deal with the loss of someone we love? Are we the same person? Are they the person we thought? Enjoy. If you like, leave a memory of a parent that tells who they were.

Sherry Roberts | 9 comments DV,

Looks good. One question: Why is the R capitalized in the Serial Date cover?

One suggestion, on your bio, flush left the text. Large junks of test are tough to read centered.

Hi Karen,

Yes I do take review requests - details of 'review guidelines' can be found here:

http://indieebooks.wordpress.com/2011...

If you want a book reviewed you have one of two options: e-mail me directly or fill out the form at:

http://indieebooks.co.uk/reviewers.php

Thanks!

Kelly

D.V. Berkom (dvberkom) | 4 comments Hi Sherry!
Thanks for your comments. The 'r' is a cap to give the cover a little something 'off' to match the book's storyline.
Best,
DV
