Linda (lssbooks) STARTED EARLY, TOOK MY DOG by Kate Atkinson - enjoyed this one and especially the Jackson Brodie character. Atkinson's style of jumping around in time and following several characters works well and is not difficult to follow, but this book was a bit boring and confusing at times. 3 stars for me.

Linda (lssbooks) MAJOR PETTIGREW'S LAST STAND by Helen Simonson - enjoyed this one but didn't love it as it was so slow-moving. Some nice, quirky characters and loved the English countryside setting but just not enough interesting events to move the plot along.

Linda (lssbooks) EMILY ALONE by Stewart O'Nan - a nice, slow read about Emily, a widow who enjoys gardening, visits from her children and doing things with her sister-in-law, Arlene. O'nan did a great job describing Emily's daily life and I also liked the ending of the book.

Linda (lssbooks) THE WEED THAT STRINGS THE HANGMAN'S BAG by Alan Bradley - enjoyed the second book in this series and especially Flavia and her kooky sisters. An English setting, 11 year old Flavia, her interesting acquaitances and friends all make this a fun read.

Linda (lssbooks) 22 BRITANNIA ROAD by Amanda Hodgkinson - really liked this book about a married couple, Janusz and Silvana, from Poland who are separated for 6 years during World War II. When they reunite, they bring many heartaches and hardships into their marriage and find reconciliation is harder than they thought. Great style, well developed characters and an easy to follow book told with flashbacks of the couple's lives without each other.

Linda (lssbooks) SISTER by Rosamund Lupton - I enjoyed this mystery about sisters, Beatrice and Tess. It has a nice start and a fast pace and I also liked the believable characters. The details about the closeness of sisters was right on the money and I could certainly relate to this special bond.

Linda (lssbooks) ONCE UPON A RIVER by Bonnie Jo Campbell - loved this book and the story of Margo Crane, age 16 who lives on Michigan's Kalamazoo River. Margo is an expert hunter who loves the outdoors. She leaves her home in search of her mother after her father is suddenly murdered. Margo takes a stolen rifle and her grandfather's boat in search of happiness and a home, but she has a hard time on her journey. Gorgeous prose, a wonderful story and an amazing main character.
