M (maninee) | 6 comments Hey everyone! I'm kind of new to this group....and I know that this is probably the most cliche topic ever but i really want to know who's the most popular character in the series, aside from Bartimaeus.

hi! this topic is a good idea. we've kinda discussed it in other topics, but it would be good to do it more organized...

i would have to say Kitty. shes definitely my favorite character after Bartimaeus :)

i know i'm probably going to be the only one to say this but...nathaniel's my favourite character next to barty. i know he's wonderfully flawed but it makes it really easy to connect with him. i mean, he's so human. kitty's more of someone i'd admire really. i could never imagine myself doing all the brave stuff she does

lol, if the other discussions are anything to go by, you are most certainly NOT alone. if i remember correctly most people liked Nate a lot more then Kitty.

M (maninee) | 6 comments really? wow, that's surprising. it's usually the brave, fighting against fate chcarater that everyoe loves. still, since i haven't read the last book yet i'm not sure that nate doesn't get better.

well then, i wont ruin it for you :)
my theory is, people like the characters they want to be like. most people want to have the ability to be brave, and fight against their fate. maybe you already can, so you like Nate....

message 7: by Pandy (new)

Pandy I love Nathaniel too, Maninee. But he's not just my favorite after Bartimaeus - he is my favorite. I agree that his flaws make him so human. I don't think that my favorite characters are necessarily characters that I want to be like, though they do have qualities I admire. What makes Nathaniel so interesting to read about, in my opinion, is his steely determination and ambition and the course of his character development, which I find really rewarding. I know this sounds kind of weird but after reading the first book and caring about Nathaniel so much, I almost felt like I had less sympathy to spare for Kitty. I know she's tough, clever, and the kind of character that you just have to root for, but I just can't like her as much as Nat. :)

M (maninee) | 6 comments Thanks Pandy! Another reason why I like Nate: Other heroes/protagonists(e.g. Harry Potter, Percy Jackson); are not completely responsible for their rise to fame. They are fated/destined to be a famous in an odd sort off way. Harry's mom put/cast a spell so that Voldy couldn't kill him and Percy's dad was the greek God of the sea. There are other heroes that I could mention but these are the ones that come to mind. In Nathaniel's case, however, he is solely responsible for the scrapes he gets into. I love that.

Sarah | 3 comments I completely agree with you, Maninee! But I think that the authors do that on purpose, sometimes, to make the characters easier to relate to. You know, "Average Joe, who secretly ISN'T! It could be you! . . . Except not really." But I digress.
Personally, Bartimaeus will always be my favorite-- but he's not what made the series worth finishing. Well, only partially anyway. Bart made the books fun and easy to read, but Nathaniel provided the struggle. You don't really like his character at all (let's face it, he was an annoying piece of ** for most of the series), but you know that he has the POTENTIAL to be so much more! You see occasional flashes of the goodness he had in the first book, and it's just enough to keep you rooting for him. (SPOILERS AHEAD.)
In the end, he justifies your faith in him (and you go, "YES! FINALLY! . . . Wait, no, WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!"), and then goes and DIES on you! And it sucks (and if you cry a little bit, you'll never admit it).
I also loved the relationship between Bartimaeus and Nathaniel. Bart's always making fun of Natty-boy (which is always fun for all-- except Nat himself), and he pretends to loathe him (maybe not all pretending), but I always got the feeling that underneath, Bartimaeus was rooting for Nathaniel too. You know, 'Maybe he'll actually turn out different than those other corrupt magicians...'
As far as Kitty goes... She played an important part in the series, but I always felt pretty neutrally towards her. *shrug* I guess her character just didn't have what it took to make me love her.
*pats Kitty plushy* Now, now, Kitty... Don't feel bad...

M (maninee) | 6 comments Sorry it took so long to reply, I was busy finishing the last book. Yes, it did make me cry. (*SPOILERS AHEAD*) How could Nathaniel just die like that? I had so hoped that he would survive and live on...to be a better magician. A second chance at life you know, but no, dear old Johnathan Stroud just had to go ahead and finish him off just when he was ready to unleash his full qualities. It's heartbreaking it is.
