I live in a desert cave (that has wi-fi).

Nice to see the collection of talent you folks have got here. My first book has been read by some people, or so I've heard. Though I don't know how most of them felt about it, I've only received four death threats from readers. So far. . .

Here's my Amazon page, if you're interested.

Sarah Glenn | 17 comments How the heck did you write 10 novels? How long are they? That's an astonishing amount of words.

With so much volume (and nine editors), you must have a steep learning curve!

message 229: by Dick (last edited Jul 05, 2011 10:03AM) (new)

Dick Peterson (dickpeterson) I am Dick Peterson and am the indie author of By the Light: A Novel of Serial Homicide. There is something to be said for that indie tag. It sort of makes you feel like you’re on a journey with Harrison Ford, an adventurous journey on which you and your actor buddy will be buckling some swashes.

The initial part of my expedition consisted of submitting query letters, partials, and fulls to agents. As travel experiences go, it was more like getting an intimate pat down from the TSA only to find they didn’t have a smoke after and did not respect you in the morning. That description was meant for humor and is not totally truthful. I actually enjoyed the learning experience and encountered some delightful agents and writers during the process.

Two Februaries ago, my wife gave a Kindle to me for my birthday. My reading habits changed. I increased by threefold the number of books I was reading. Though I was still reading my favorite legacy authors, I was discovering (for nice prices) exciting newbie and indie authors. I started putting a bit of emphasis on reading folks from my native Louisiana, as well as writers from Kansas and Missouri, where I now live and work.

About this time, indie authors and e-books were changing the landscape in a big way. I’m 61 years old and have better things to do than spend the rest of my life chasing agents. Now, thanks to Amazon’s Kindle Store, I have buyers and readers rather than impersonal communiqués from literary agencies. I have people asking me to get my book into Nook format or into print. That’s in the works.

Another thing I have since I embarked on my indie journey is the pleasurable experience of interacting with people like you who are also on adventures of a lifetime. I hope to be communicating with many of you soon. So, here’s to the friendships and mutual assistance to be had here, as well as success for all of us.

Michael Shean (mshean) | 1 comments Hey there folks. I'm Mike, and I write about horrible things/people/happenings. Also sometimes there is black comedy.

I prefer to write the dark stuff, horror and sci-fi mostly. My first book, Shadow of a Dead Star, is a work of future noir set in late 21st-century Seattle. This book is the first of the three-book Wonderland Cycle, and I hope that it's a success.

That said, it's great to get into such an energetic community of creative independents! It's been a hard road getting up to this point, but I'm really pleased to see that the ranks of storytellers are swelling. Together we can advance to great success and fortune.

Daniel Shortell (danielshortell) | 3 comments Where's Unimportant

New literary fiction author Daniel Shortell's debut novel Where's Unimportant now available.

Where's Unimportant:
Jack Addington is stuck. A carefree life wandering the globe has morphed into a monotonous existence working for an oppressive Manhattan-based software company peddling products which destroy the lives of decent people. Jack struggles through soul-sucking affairs with despotic executives and eccentric scientists by mentally projecting himself out of the present and into past adventures. Avoidance, however, is temporary, and it does not take long for his overly medicated mind to lose perspective, causing him to act increasingly irrational in a brutally rational world. Jack attempts to reconnect to reality through the guidance of a colorful group of 'advisers', but, a bleak situation continues to spin out of control despite his best efforts. Ultimately for Jack, a slice of contentment is found only when luck stands amid the rubble of his failed attempts at perseverance. Sharply satirical, funny and painfully honest, Where's Unimportant is a snapshot of one man's failed attempt at the American Dream.

About Daniel
Daniel Shortell is a thirty-something currently holed-up in a fourth-floor walk-up in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. At university, he earned degrees in ridiculous, boring shit like finance and information systems. His real education came from wandering around the world.

To learn more about the author and to view some of his other material, visit his website at www.danielshortell.com

Matthew Boyd | 1 comments Hi! My name is Bill S. Preston, Esquire...

Just kiddin!

I'm Matthew Boyd and I am relatively new to self-publishing but no stranger to writing. It's nice to have a good group of such devoted indie authors all in one place!

If you like zombie stuff, you can check out my continuing series, "Z.N.A". Each book is 15-20k words and tells the story of a group of survivors in a post apocalyptic world almost completely dominated by fast zombies. The survivors struggle to stay alive and find out the truth behind what happened.

Along the way they develop super-human powers they use to fight their way through the endless hordes.

Z.N.A. - Origins
ZNA: Journey

If you like thrillers and serial killers, then check out "Suicide Serial". It's about a serial killer that gets his jollies by forcing innocent people to kill themselves.

Jessica Nelson (allwaysunmended) Hi, my name is Jessica Nelson, or @AllwaysUnmended on Twitter. I write a variety of things, from multiple genres, and am currently working on my first novel (though it may kill me), which seems to be a bit of a paranormal horror/thriller at the moment but may evolve to lean towards sci-fi a bit more as time goes on. I have a blog at http://allwaysunmended.com, where I post on whatever strikes my fancy at the time - especially writing, books and photography. Lastly, I write book reviews for The Future Fire ( http://reviews.futurefire.net), where I happily dissect the work of others, and then cringe knowing they will someday do the same to me. ;)

Christine (xtinela) | 1 comments Okay, I've had a Goodreads account for like, months now, and well. Now I'm using it. Starting today. Right now. I don't know what I want out of it yet.

I wrote a book called Blue Valley. It's all right. Historical fantasy. My next thing is a cozy fashion-industry mystery that I'm going to have to write under my legal, not married name, because that's the name I use in the aforementioned fashion industry. Y'all will be hearing plenty of whining about what a pain in the ass that is.

My posts will be littered with typos and poor sentence capping because I often write with a baby in one arm. Leave it be and don't give me a hard time about it.

Aren't you glad my crabby ass signed on?

message 237: by Kaye (new)

Kaye George | 33 comments Christine, this is actually one of the most interesting intros I've read. Welcome to the group. In my case, I'm pretty Goodreads-clueless, too.

message 243: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Grossman (laurenbgrossman) | 42 comments I had an idea and wondered if my friends at Goodreads would be willing to help me out. Four months ago I paid to have a book trailer made. It turned out great. In the 4 months I have had 840 visits and 24 comments. I may have made some book sales through it – that’s hard to tell.

I asking if all of you would please click onto this site:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xQorTk... , and, if possible, leave a comment. That would help me rise up the Youtube ladder. Additionally, I’m requesting that you share the website address onto your Facebook page, Twitter, blogs, etc.

I don’t believe that a book trailer could possibly go “viral” – that only happens to people who burp the Star-Spangled Banner. But it would be a great experiment. Obviously, this request is not completely altruistic – it’s possible I may get some sales out of it. But, we could then all help each other in the same way, since we are all in the same boat.

My thanks to those of you who do this and please let me know your book’s name (website, Amazon link- if you’re an Amazon Associate, etc).

James Birch (jameswallacebirch) | 37 comments Lauren - that's a very good book trailer. $ well spent! It provides a great overview and is touching. I don't have all my accounts set up (amazon, youtube, etc) so I didn't get a chance to comment on there but you did get 1 more view. best of luck w/ it!

message 246: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Grossman (laurenbgrossman) | 42 comments Thanks James.
Wondering if I can reciprocate? Do you have a book?

message 247: by James (new)

James Birch (jameswallacebirch) | 37 comments Oh no worires! was just happy to help. It is not published just yet - will be out as e-book later this summer. I am re-thinking the title (originally, The Emory Walden Story) as it just doesn't seem to have sticking power.

If you (or anyone else) would like to read synopsis & opening chapter and give me some input on titles I'd be more than happy to take any suggestion at this point! Its not much to go on, but it'd be really cool and I am totally worn out on trying to think up something:

Sue Owen (bysueowen) | 30 comments Hey all. I'm Sue. Right now I've got a lot going on. I Indie released my first book in May and sales just didn't happen so I reworked the cover and in doing so found a better title. So as long as I was reworking, I reread the book and added a few things. Results are going to be amazing. Cover is done and posted on my blog (bysueowen.blogspot.com).

I've also started an Indie author support sight that's been going on for a few months now. We support all things Indie. Need a review? Want to spotlight your new book? Need to tell someone your story? Come to Paper Mustang and we'll help (papermustang.com).

AND my daughter has started a publishing company that I fully intend to support. She will do start to finish free services for our authors. That means, all you have to do is write it. We'll get the cover, format, publication sites, upload it for you and you just rake in the rewards. Actively looking for authors right now. Check out Pink Phoenix Publishing (pinkphoenixpublishing.com).

Finally, I'm still writing. I've got at least 4 books I write on regularly and one that is at least half way done.

Oh and I do work full time, too. :)

Happy to meet you-all and I hope to see you in future forums.

Cheers.
