Moral Courage by Rushworth Kidder
This summer Head of Schools Susan Nelson invited faculty and staff to read Rushworth Kidder's Moral Courage, a book that relates to one of Webb's founding principles and the first goal of our strategic plan -- HONOR. To start off the 2008-2009 school year, the entire faculty and staff gathered together for a day of discussion that focused on our principles and core values, on ethical decision-making and moral reasoning, on solving ethical dilemmas, and on achieving a common understanding of what it means to be an honorable person - a person of moral courage. Throughout this school year we will continue these dicussions with students, faculty and staff through a series of activities, speakers and workshops, including a day-long Honors Symposium.

On the Road
Assigned summer reading for juniors this year is ON THE ROAD by American writer Jack Kerouac. It is a largely autobiographical work based on the spontaneous cross-country adventures of Kerouac and his friends during the middle of the 20th century. It is often considered a defining work of the postwar Beat Generation that was inspired by jazz, poetry, and drug experiences.
