Wow this book was awful. I read it in 6th grade because it was the only choice that seemed decent at the time. I read the whole thing, and every page was awful, but it may be the fact that i don't like Avi's writing, or that it was just poorly written in general. Also, the ending didn't make since/ didn't add to the story at all. I strongly advise you to stay away from this book. Shudder, it was so awful.
I liked this book when I was 11. I don't think I could read it now and enjoy it the same way. Sorry you did not care for it. You can't have fried chicken without WAFFLES!
I know but this a totally meaningless discussion, it isn't even a discussion worthy noting let alone written.
I read it for summer reading before my sixth grade year, and at first I found it a little slow or boring, but then I actually set my mind to finishing it, and read the whole book in like two hours and ended up loving it.
i so loved it! charlotte is one of my fav fictional characters and Avi is one of my fav authors! his books "Traitors Gate" and "Beyond the Western Sea" are both AMAZING!
What particularly resonated with me the first and second time I read this book as how Charlotte starts off as being this spoiled little princess. Then she buckles down, works on the ship, and becomes part of the crew. I particularly enjoyed *spoiler alert* her choice to leave her life and be on this ship. Her perspective changed and I loved her even more so for that. My hero! It's a shame so many folks on this thread couldn't enjoy it. Albeit the language, the story shines through for me. Charlotte was bold at thirteen. Who knows what her grown up self would look like now? I'd like to see that story.
Hear, hear! This book was great and fast-paced. I finished it in about three days. I rarely read a book that fast unless it really interests me.Kudos to Avi. :)
I had to read in 5th grade.. and it isnt the type of book i usually read... But i absolutely LOVED IT!! :D
It was a read aloud I used in the 90's when I taught 5th grade. I loved it and some of the kids did too.
I agree! I can not understand why most of you think it was boring! The first chapter was slow, but after that it was an absolutely amazing page-turner. Sorry, but I can't believe you thought it was "boring."
I liked it, but it was confussing because I was reading Bloody Jack at the same time, and they are both on ships around the same time period.PS: If your going to have fried chicken and waffles, you need to season it with bacon and cheese shavings.

I'm not surprised you didn't enjoy it in 8th grade. And is there a moderator who can clean up any non pertinent posts?
Rose wrote: "What particularly resonated with me the first and second time I read this book as how Charlotte starts off as being this spoiled little princess. Then she buckles down, works on the ship, and becom..."i completley agree!
I was also around eleven or twelve when I read this book, and I absolutely adored it! I still have it, and I'll probably read it again sometime.
I read this book when I was in the 5th grade and loved it, but if I was made to read it for school, I probably wouldn't have. What's the movie called?
This is an amazing book. It had the perfect ending (except the fact that it was a little rushed), and Avi did a good job writing a book in a girl's point of view.
I enjoyed the book, it was different and exciting. Waffles, however, lack both elements. : )
I agree! Who cares about fried chicken and waffles... Sure there okay... But the books even better! Honestly! Why would you even care to talk about fried chicken and waffles. This book was amazing. It had adventure... action... survival. It was really exciting to me, and I couldn't put it down. If you haven't read it, its a good, (I mean great) book!
WOW!!! This book us again amazing, and your hear talking about WAFFLES???? WOW!! This is a reading website!!!:)
I saw waffles. And whip cream. Yummy =)
waffles are good how could you forget a waffle with whip cream. i am sure a book can not do that Katie.True confession of Charlotte doyle is good, but not as good as to forget a waffle with whip cream.
