Writers and their blogs. We all have them. They are easy to set up and free to use. But do we get value out of them.

Probably not.

The spotlight fell on Craig's List in the recent Long Island murder investigations. Then it was stated that the site gets on average 20 million hits a day!

In all probability, most of us get no more than 100 hits on our blog even on a good day. So, the problem is this: Even if the material we write for out blogs is top notch, what effect is it gong to have if it's seen by so few people?

This thread invites tips on how to improve the visibility of our blogs.

Just to kick off, I guess most of us have installed a hits tracker.

I use Statcounter .

It's free and gives lots of information on who is visiting your site from where and how long they stay.

Looking at the depressingly small numbers is the sort of tough love required to start to bother about increasing them, IMHO.

Most spiders are efficient at crawling over your site and indexing your content on Google or Bing. But it's still a good idea to Ping whenever you add new content to your blog.

Pingomatic alerts 19 news aggregators.

Feedping gives a wider coverage.

I use both.

Links, Links, Links

The position of your blog in the search results on Google or Bing is vital. How many people go much beyond the first one or two pages of results?

One of the key factors that the search engines use to rank your content is the number of links other sites have to you.

How to get such links. Be generous. Link to other sites and they will link to you. That's how the web was built!

Kasi Blake (kcblake) | 7 comments I've only had my blog for a couple months, but I think it is doing fairly well. Every day I post the link in at least two places and invite people to come see it.

Good advice, Seb! Thanks.

KC

That blog looks good!

Suggestion: Why not add a section on links and post links to your favorite sites.

Best wishes

One way of checking the links to your blog is to type the following into the Google search box:

links: xxxxxxxxx

Where xxxxxxxxx is the URL of your blog.

This is often a thought-provoking experience for writers....

A note on tinyurl:

Tinyurl (and the other URL shorteners) is great. That long URL shrinks right down. (You really have to do this for twitter).

But shortened URLs are a no-no in terms of building authority for your blog. Search engines won't recognise them and you will get no credit in the rankings for any links that contain them. Worse, shortened URLs and more likely to be regarded as spam since it's not apparent to the spiders what they contain.

So use the long form URLs in your blogging.

Holy Maloney, my austere blog for readers is a sex object:

Literary Criticism | Chinese Girls Photo | San Bao | Sexy China ... - [ Translate this page ]
Sumber Artikel : http://coolmainpress.com/ajwriting/ar...

The article at that address on my blog is "Does literary criticism spoil or enhance the reading experience of unread books?"

Sexy, hey!

James Everington | 2 comments Thanks Seb, had no idea about short URLs being bad for blogs; now I think about it's obvious though.

Good hint.

Andre

It's weird the connections that get made!

K.C.

Thanks. You can get by with some very simple html.

To add a link, just paste this in:

YYYYYY

where XXXXXXX is the URL that you want to post a link to and YYYYYYY is the name/title that you want to give your link.

Except, I've now deleted your last post by mistake (it said that you wouldn't be able to add links) and since Goodreasd interprets html, you can't see the code I'm suggesting!) I'll find a way round this and get back.

Best wishes

Just to add that it's taken awhile but I now realise the importance of a writer's blog and will be working next month to improve mine:
