Why is everyone writing books about witches, and vampires, and wizards, and so on? Why not write realistic stories about realistic characters?

I'm working on a story about a blind girl who gets involved with various problems at a mainstream high school. She has no magic. She's just a smart kid. It's a very unusual story, and definitely not what you might think. Why not try to be different?
