Vanessa (vanessamc) | 646 comments I got a great idea for a topic from Elizabeth, and I thought we could start a new thread here.

When did you start reading the series? How old were you or how long in terms of new reader, a few weeks, years, etc.

How did you come by the series and what made you keep reading it?

message 2: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa (vanessamc) | 646 comments For me, I found an audio book in the library and starting listening to the series right away. This was about 4 or 5 years ago. Since then, I have listened to each book at least 2 times, but more like three. I kept listening to the audio at first mostly because Susan Erickson does just a great job, and because I loved the characters, especially Eve and Roarke. I loved Eve's tough ass persona and Roarke's, uh, sexuality and I loved them together.

I discovered this series early last year after I received a reader for Christmas. My sisters-in-law and I play cards online every week and use Skype for audio. They kept talking about someone named "Roarke" so I finally asked. They couldn't believe they hadn't shared this series with me. They had me start with Naked in Death and the next week I asked for more. They quickly directed me to the website to get the series order. At first, I bought one book at a time. Finally, I just bought the rest of the series after I finished Vengeance in Death and knew I was hooked and in it for the long haul. I finished the series in about two months.

What keeps me in it? Everything...the writing, the mystery and suspense, the character development and the romance. There are no others like this and this series is in it's own class.

Alyssa (alyssa_hesper) Like you Jonetta, I also started the series early last year when a friend recommended the series to me. I've been hooked ever since. The first time through the books, I read them in paperback. However I now listen to them because as everyone has said, Susan Erikson is truly amazing!

message 5: by Mrs. (new)

Mrs. Badass (mrsbadass) | 27 comments It's been about 4 or 5 years I think. My mom got me hooked. kept talking about this amazing series with a guy named Roarke and then fanning herself

message 6: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (peanutty222) I just started last month, I read the first 5 books last month, and I listened to Vengeance in Death, book #6 on audio this week. I really enjoyed the audio version, the only complaint I had was I cringed every time I heard Peabody. I loved Roarke and Dallas on audio!

message 7: by Alyssa (new)

Alyssa (alyssa_hesper) Just want to say thank you to Erika for being the friend to recommend this fabulous series to me!

message 8: by Tya (new)

Tya I started reading the series in about 2000 or so. (WOW). I was at my great aunts house and she had a rule, anyone under 18 had to stay in the basement until it was time to go home. There was no TV or anything down there so I started poking around in her boxes and found her books. Well. I found A book. One, in her entire basement and it was Glory in Death. I was down in her basement for about 3 hours and made it half way through the book, she actually allowed me to keep it admitting that she had owned the book for years and had never gotten around to it. I finished the book that night and the next morning I walked to the library nearest me and asked if there were any sequels. There was a happy dance done when she said yes!

Sara ♥ (saranicole) | 1038 comments I started this year. I listened to Naked in Death at the end of January, Glory and Immortal at the VERY beginning of February (both done by the other narrator, who is NO Susan Ericksen), then I bought all the other mp3 CDs. I read Rapture in mid-Feb, then really started at the beginning of March. I'm on Fantasy in Death right now. 3 more after this till I'm caught up!

I LOVE Eve and Roarke, Peabody and McNab, and ALL of the other secondary characters! Some of the homicides are more than I really want in my head, but I love reading about the relationships between the characters, and how they all come together to bring justice for the dead and their families.

I sit around the house and play with my baby while I listen, and I do the dishes and laundry and cook while I listen... and I listen at work (part-time at library), and sometimes I alternate to READING the books at work... Yeah...

message 19: by Seresa (new)

Seresa (pardoteach) I happened upon "Remember When" on my Chirstmas break. I love Nora and found this book at my moms so I read it. I had never heard of JD Robb . . oh I had seen the books while looking for new ones to read but had never heard anything about them. So when I hit the In Death section of the book my brain had to change directions and I wasn't so sure I liked the book. Then someone told me I needed to start at the beginning and I was hooked. I just finished reading Conspiracy and I'm listening to Immortal. I love listening to books when I walk, I could walk for hours listening to books.

Sara, I know about the other narrator. I heard her long ago when I was listening to cassettes. She's not even close to Susan Erickson. She's was so bad, I wouldn't listen to any of her other books either. I can't remember her name, though.

By the way, I love Peabody's voice. It goes so well with McNab's.

Laura | 5 comments I don't like the voice of Feeny in my Naked in Death recording.. It's a "playaway"device and I don't like it. It keeps skipping, but the only version available from my library is an abridged version. So I'm going to try to muddle through. I'm only on chapter 5.

Feeney's voice is probably the closest to Eve's at times. But after you get used to it, it starts to have it's own rhythm that you can hear. You should be able to get used to it, especially when you have a better recording.

message 28: by Karon (new)

Karon (agmommy) | 182 comments I started the series in audio in September 2010. I was travelling 550 miles one direction back and forth to visit my dying Grandmother and then once more to attend her funeral. I needed something long and interesting to keep me awake while driving and this series did the trick! I'm only about 1/2 thru the series, maybe a little further. I started Divided in Death this morning. I have a 10 minute commute to work, so I listen for about 20 minutes in the car and then I really like listening while I work out in the mornings.

I love the Eve/Roarke and Peabody/McNabb relationships but I've always been intrigued by mysteries. So I was thrilled to find a series that mixes mystery, romance, and humor (these books are SO funny!) all in the same story. It's what keeps me begging for more.

After the first few books I just wanted to "talk" about this series so I was ever-so-thrilled to stumble upon this wonderful GoodReads group!

message 29: by Sara ♥ (last edited Apr 25, 2011 12:48PM) (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) | 1038 comments You know what? I usually avoid mysteries like they were infectious diseases. So many of them are just UNFATHOMABLY KITSCHY! I cannot describe my level of loathing for those types of books...

SO, I read the first In Death book (1) for a reading challenge and (2) for the romance. It was Nora Roberts, after all! And I really enjoy the mystery aspect of these books. I think the difference is that they're VERY SERIOUS mysteries, you know? They aren't who-stole-the-prize-winning-apple-pie-from-the-county-fair mysteries (kill me now!). Rather, they're life-or-death mysteries with very serious police work involved. I really like that.

message 30: by Karon (new)

Karon (agmommy) | 182 comments Yes that's the only kind of mysteries I like too Sara. And the stories are often rooted to make Eve take them personal because of her past....so she stands up for the victims even that much more. I just love her integrity as a murder investigator/lieutenant.

message 31: by TinaNoir (last edited Apr 26, 2011 03:14PM) (new)

TinaNoir | 106 comments I started the series when the very first book Naked In Death was published back in 1995. So I have been reading them in real time, twice a year for 16 years. I have the original 'Blue Lady' covers paperback books for the early books until they stopped publishing them with COnspiracy In Death.

Naked in Death (In Death, #1) by J.D. Robb Glory in Death (In Death, #2) by J.D. Robb Immortal in Death (In Death, #3) by J.D. Robb Rapture in Death (In Death, #4) by J.D. Robb Ceremony in Death (In Death, #5) by J.D. Robb Vengeance in Death (In Death, #6) by J.D. Robb Holiday in Death (In Death, #7) by J.D. Robb

I started listening to the audio with Innocent In Death but went back and listened to all the audios after. Now I start with the audio and buy the books when they come out in paperback.

I had read somewhere that NR was writing a mystery series. I had no idea they were futuristic until I think somewhere around the middle of the first chapter. LOL.

I was immediately hook b/c at the time, Eve was a very different type of romance heroine and I was very fascinated with her. And it didn't hurt that NR published these books like clockwork. You could count on two a year.

Stacey | 45 comments My mother gave me a copy of Remember When in 2004. I was only going to read the Nora Roberts story. I had no interest in / never heard of JD Robb. My mom told me to try it I may like it... I hated the JD Robb story. I couldn't get into the futuristic/sci fi bent to the Robb story. But I did read it cover to cover. Shortly after she gave me Divided in Death. I was extremely hestitant to to read it based on my first impression... I had nothing else to read so I decided what the heck. I was hooked almost from the beginning. After that I went back to the begining getting copies of the books in order from the library. I have read each book (expect Treachery) at least 3 times and I have lost count of how many times I have listened to the entire series :-) I am hooked!!
