50 Point Task

MsOPP (Julie)'s Task: "I Need to Know What Happens Next!"

I've always been a sucker for series. I read the first book, then WHAM! I'm reading the 19th book in the series 2 weeks later, upset that I have to wait at least half a year before the next book in the series is released. So the challenge is simple. Read 3 books in a series. The caveat is that reread books don't count.

You do not have to start at the first book of the series, but you do need to read 3 books in the series in successive order. For instance, if if you've already read books 1 and 2 in a series, you can read books 3, 4, and 5 for this task.

Trilogies are fine as long as you've never read any of the 3 books. Spinoff series do not count as a "continuation" of a series. "In between" books, such as Dark-Hunter Christmas do not count for this task. The series number listed in the Goodreads title will be used for this task.

Christine US (christineus) | 575 comments This is awesome! I was going to use #2 from the JD Robb "In death" series for something else, but now I can fit in 2,3 & 4:) I really liked the 1st one and was looking forward to reading more - just couldn't figure out where:)

Michelle (m_ellereads) | 31 comments I've been reading through the 39 Clues series and am getting ready to read #8. If I read #8, #9 and #10 (completing the series!) will I be able to count this for the 50 point task?

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 3041 comments I would think so. :)

message 13: by Foxy Grandma (new)

Foxy Grandma (foxygrandma) | 1194 comments Wow, I am like you and finish a series right after I start it..... I just finished Into the Wilderness but don't have time to read three more books in this series AND finish the challenge SOOOOO off to find a brand new series!

message 14: by Foxy Grandma (new)

Foxy Grandma (foxygrandma) | 1194 comments Ok, so found a series, but very confusing as to which is the first book. If you look at the list for Christine Warren it says Wolf at the Door is first, but when you go to the link it says it is Others #7, but if you look at the original title it says Others #2
For She's No Faerie Princess The list says it is # 2, but the link says Others #8 and original title is Others book 2.
The Demon You Know it lists as number 3, but the link says it is Others #9 with original title as Others Book 3.

HELP!!!!!! I "is confused"

message 15: by Dee (last edited Apr 21, 2011 09:50AM) (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 8947 comments according to her website, and what I found here - Wolf at the Door is #1; She's no Faerie Princess is #2; The Demon You know is #3...since series tagging is still relatively new on GR, it might be that they were tagged twice

ETA - ok, I see what it is now...there were a series of six stories in a series called fix (which were like a prequel to the others), which are being re-released as longer books...so i'm not sure how that is going to affect the series - I'll post something in the librarian group

message 16: by MsOPP (new)

MsOPP | 129 comments @Beth - In this case, I don't think that the short stories can stand on their own as a book. In my mind, I would consider Fixed (the 6 story compilation) as book one of the series and Wolf at the Door as the 2nd book and so on.

And I'd also like to recommend the iron fey series, A song of Ice and fire, and the hunger games. They are all great!

Kathy G. | 1931 comments Would Chris D'Lacey's The Fire Within (Book 1) and the next two in the series work? I'm sure it's not a "children's" book since the main character is 20 and going to college.

***I found out his age by this link and not on the Goodreads' description***

Thanks!

message 22: by Bea (new)

Bea So if I have read books #8 and #14, I can either start from the beginning or read those between the two books I have read. But do I have to read the three in successive 9,10, 11 or can I read 9, 10, 12? I am worried that the library may not have exactly all the books of a series.

It will have to be 9, 10, 11 or 10, 11, 12 or 11, 12, 13.

message 26: by Coralie (new)

Coralie The series I would like to read, I have read books 1, 4, 5 and 6. There are only 8 books in the series. Can I read books 2, 3 and 7, or will I have to find another series?

message 27: by Katie (new)

Katie (katieisallbooked) | 260 comments LOVE this task! I'm trying to decide between two series for this one.

If I use Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series, do the "between the numbers" books count if I read them based on publication date? For instance, could I read Lean Mean Thirteen, Plum Spooky & Fearless Fourteen?

I'm sorry, Coralie, but you will have to find a new series to read, then.

Katie - between numbers books do not count. We are going by GR's numbering designation on the title's GR page. If it is designed #X.X, then it is a "between" book and does not count.

Yes, that is what I thought you would say. OK, I will go to the library with a list of possible series and see which one they own consecutive titles for. Wish me luck!

The Body in the Library
The Moving Finger
A Murder is Announced

RedSycamore | 440 comments I have a mismatched set of the three volumes of Aeschylus' Oresteia (Agamemnon, The Chophoroe, Aeschylus: Eumenides), but they aren't listed as being part of a trilogy - it looks like they're usually just bundled into a single volume instead. Would they still count for this challenge?

message 39: by MsOPP (new)

MsOPP | 129 comments Since this is a well-known trilogy, I will accept it, but the 3 books need to meet the length requirement.

message 40: by RedSycamore (last edited May 24, 2011 09:36AM) (new)

RedSycamore | 440 comments Thanks! After ending up with stand alone copies of the first and third volumes I had the middle one printed. The links to the first and third are the right editions, but I can't seem to find the right edition of The Choephori... Is there a way to add new editions of books to the Goodreads database?

EDIT: Found it!
Coephori. Greek and English. 1893 Aischylou Choephoroi. The Choephori. With an introd., commentary and translation by A.W. Verrall
Silly alternate spellings...
