Ari (aricl) Julianne, I've even seen that difference among English native speakers :)

Perhaps I have what we call "deformación profesional" (professional bias?) in Spanish: I have many different clients that ask me to translate "Hispanic" in many different ways. Some claim by "Hispanic" they mean "from Spain", since for Latin Americans they use "Latinos"; some include Brazilians in the group [sic, I'm serious!], some mean both "from Spain and Latin America"...

The worse thing is, the word in Spanish ("hispano" or "hispánico") is equally confusing... it can refer to its historical origin (Hispania), to the Spanish language only, or to people of Hispanic (sic :p) origin who live in the US only... so I can picture your husband cringing whenever the word comes out :-/

Charity (charityross) Quick questions, Cynthia:

Are we allowed to use books with the name of a STATE (5 point task #4)?

Are we allowed to read any book by a gay or lesbian author or does it have to be a NOVEL (15 point task #5)?

message 64: by Angela (new)

Angela | 1934 comments I was wondering the same thing Charity.

Does anyone know if Marisa de los Santos author of Love Walked In and Belong to Me is Hispanic?

Also Cynthia, could you explain "read a book and cook a meal inspired by it"? An example would be good! Thanks :)

Charity (charityross) Starlight - You could still read a book about Obama if you feel up to it. You will probably not see a shortage of those books anytime soon.

message 72: by Charity (last edited Sep 01, 2008 03:13PM) (new)

Charity (charityross) Starlight - I really enjoyed the books I read by Jennifer Finney Boylan (written as James Finney Boylan at the time), particularly Getting In and The Planets.

I will be reading House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski which has received rave reviews. Apparently, it is extremely creepy, so make sure you are up for that.

A lot of people have sung the praises of Paulo Coelho, The Alchemist especially. I have never read any of his stuff myself, but I hope to down the road.

Those are the few that spring instantly to mind. Hopefully, someone else will be able to offer more suggestions if none of those interest you.

message 73: by Angela (new)

Angela | 1934 comments I do not know what types of books you like, but I enjoyed The Liar's Diary by Patry Francis.

I also liked Love Walked In by Marisa de los Santos, The Year of Fog by Michelle Richmond, and The Opposite of Love by Julie Buxbaum.

message 74: by Ann from S.C. (new)

Ann from S.C. | 1395 comments Ok, another ?...Would Paulo Coelho be concidered a Hispanic writer?

message 75: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1826 comments 1. Yes by football I mean American football.
2. A state is fine for the 5 point "location" in the title question
3. Read a book and cook a meal inspired by it...for example Diane Mott Davidson's or other's culinary mysteries...if you read one and then made a recipe from it...or if a book as the name of a food item in the title and you cook that food...or read a book that takes place in an area with a culinary specialty i.e. read a book set in Japan and you make Sushi etc. All of those would count.
4. Paulo Coelho is fine for the hispanic/latin/spanish category

I may not be around much in the next couple of days...my grandfather is sick in the hospital...probably isn't going to be around much longer so if you have questions just use your best judgment...or anyone else can answer for me.
