I've seen RA's package. It's not very impressive. It's pretty pale, actually.

Well in all fairness it isn't something you actually try to tan.

Contents may have shifted during processing, my man.

My beloved hubby would kill me if he knew about me sharing this, but, he was in great pain and I was quite lonely while his crispy package healed. At least he burned it privately in a tanning bed and did not traumatize the neighborhood by waving his manhood around.

OUCH!

I was talking to our local postmistress on Thursday. She is subcontracted by Canada Post and not part of the union. She was saying that the plant is FULL of mail, but the workers are there physically, putting in their time, but not making any effort to process the mail.
They're all pissed off they didn't get their 5 days a month paid sick leave, and that the wage settlement enforced by the government is lower than what was on the table when the talks broke off. There are grumblings that the union is going to sue Harper.
I think the postal workers should join the real world where millions of people don't get paid sick leave or paid vacations. There's not much public support in my area for their complaints. I'm not sure how it is on Barb and Helena's side of the country.
Say, that was 2 weeks ago. Did you drop the packages in the mail? Or should I assume mine has gotten lost?

Now can everyone please identify their mixes? Some of them don't seem to have an author attributed. Starting with Space: The Vinyl Frontier.

The title of my shebang is A Book's Life, but I think I put my name on the cd.

Looking forward to listening on my long drive tomorrow.
I listened to the "Kids" mix by Janine. Wonderful stuff!

I'm loving the David Bowie track right now. :)

I love that Led Zeppelin's "Immigrant Song" reminds Misha of kittens. Hee!

A Book’s Life
I set up this shebang as a chronological account of a book’s life. The first part (1-7) primarily deals with writing and storytelling, the second part (8-14) presents stories in different genres, the third part (15-16) is about rejection – which can be either by a publisher or by readers – , and the subject of the fourth part (17-22) is reading.
Writing/storytelling
1. Write About Love – Belle & Sebastian
This is about writing of course, the idea it starts with, but also makes me think about TC when I hear: ‘Every day I’m stuck in an office …’ Though as far as I know most of you don’t hate their jobs.
2. Hows About Tellin A Story – Devendra Banhart
I know, this title needs an apostrophe.
‘Hows about tellin a story, one that’s really about somebody, what they saw and what they did, how they died and how they lived.’
3. To The Ghosts Who Write History Books – The Low Anthem
‘To them ghosts who write history books, or them ghosts who write songs, everyone asks: would you write one about me?’
4. Writer’s Minor Holiday – Calexico
Somehow I never really saw the writer in Calexico’s ‘Carried to dust’, the concept album this song is taken from, and despite the title, this song isn’t overtly centered on writing. But sometimes you just need a break from writing.
5. Something To Say – Most Unpleasant Men
Maybe this belongs in part 4 (‘I like to read in my underwear’), but it is also about finding a way to express yourself. ‘I know I have to answer, I know there is something to say, I know I have to answer, but I don’t know the words.’
6. Speech – LPG
Continues last song’s focus on oral rather than written storytelling. That it’s in the form of a speech is a bit strange when you hear it live and don’t know there’s supposed to be applause in the gaps.
7. Running – Gil Scott-Heron
This guy has a way with words, and is a great example of oral storytelling.
‘Because running is the way your life and mine will be described.’
Stories
8. Beautiful In Beaufort-Wes – Gert Vlok Nel
Gert Vlok Nel is a South African poet and musician and I love his work so much that you’ll have to suffer through it twice on this shebang. He writes in Afrikaans, but there should be enough words in English to give you some idea of what the song is about.
‘Beautiful in Beaufort-Wes’ reads like a letter from a guy to his old lover. She is now married (en nou is jy en jou man both computer analysts) but unhappy (en laas winter you tried to cut both of your wrists) and she has written her old lover a letter which is repeated in the chorus: ‘jy kan nie meer slaap nie, nie meer lag nie, nie meer iets vir jouself doen nie, nooit ooit weer vir my soen nie’ (you [she] can’t sleep no more, can’t laugh no more, no longer do anything for yourself anymore, never ever kiss me again). In his letter the guy reminisces, but in the end he remembers why they broke up. He imagined them both living in Beaufort-Wes, and: ‘ek kon nie meer slaap nie, nie meer lag nie, nie meer so iets doen nie, nooit ooit weer vir jou soen nie.’
9. That’s The Story Of My Life – The Velvet Underground
It has ‘story’ in the title. It is by The Velvet Underground. Of course I had to use it. Though ‘The Gift’ would have fit here as well.
10. Abdullah – Fats Waller & His Rhythm
Besides the story and the atmosphere, I really enjoy the excessive rhyming in this song. ‘Abdullah was the king of Amadullah, he lived in a harem down in Bullah, Abdullah took a trip to Honolulu [pronounced -lullah of course], there he met a British girl named Lulu. He was so entranced by the way she danced,’ and so on.
11. On Battleship Hill – PJ Harvey
After the battle.
12. The Evil Needle – C-Mon & Kypski
‘The name of this story ,little boy little girl, today is “The evil needle”’
Watch the video: http://youtu.be/eq_OEhcWp1g
13. Billy Idol Look-alike Contest – The Very Sexuals
How did you meet? ‘We met on the evening of the Billy Idol look-alike contest, you looked so very pretty, and hey, you look exactly like him.’
14. Rivier – Gert Vlok Nel
A love song about the journey a man makes to see his lover, from Pretoria to the Kaap. It’s not just about the physical journey, it is also about repenting for what he did in Pretoria, where he slept with another woman. He speaks of the stops he makes, how many km he has yet to go and how much he misses her. The chorus: ‘Rivier, Oh Rivier, jy's die diepste woord wat ek ken, op jou kon ek vaar na die see en na haar, in die hoop om haar hart te wen. Maar woestyn, was die woord waardeur ek moet reis om haar hart te wen’ (River, oh river, you’re the deepest word I know, on you I could travel to the sea and to her, hoping to win her heart. But desert was the word through which I had to travel, hoping to win her heart).
Rejection
15. Sad Lover – An Pierlé
A love affair ending. The relationship and her love are described as a story and a novel. ‘I’ve written you a novel alone. Would you finally mind telling me it’s just another love affair done.’
16. Poems – Tricky
‘You promised me poems’
Reading
17. Who’s In Control – British Sea Power
‘I’m a big fan of the local library, I just read a book but that’s another story.’
18. Reading A Book – John Dear Mowing Club
This song was chosen for obvious reasons, and is the only one I have with ‘reading’ in the title. ‘I was reading a book by Henry David Thoreau, a gentle breeze was blowing, through my window …’
19. A Good Day To Be You – MC Honky
A compliment I’d like to hear more often: ‘You’re very well read, but you don’t make me feel stupid.’ Though, thinking about it, does that imply well-read people are usually pedantic? Because I know we’re not. Well, maybe sometimes we are.
20. Ridin’ The True Companion – Paulusma
‘I’d rather stroll with my true companion, I’d rather read Kerouac … or is it my imagination?’
21. Ostrich – Pien Feith
‘I’m gonna read your books until the pages fall out, because with every line and with every rhyme a sweet memory springs to mind.’
22. Knoek – De Kift
This song is based around the character Lucky from Waiting For Godot. It begins and ends with Lucky’s monologue, which you can read here: http://followmehere.com/2010/08/06/lu... Between the parts of the monologue are lines from Lucky’s master, Pozzo. Vladimir and Estragon, the main characters from Waiting For Godot, ask him what a ‘knoeck’ (the name Pozzo in this song uses to describe Lucky’s role) is, and Pozzo explains and talks about Lucky. His lines are also taken from the play.
