Wyatt | 90 comments Mine was either The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon or The Eyes Of The Dragon. Since I started on his books at age 11 I was trying to find some of the less extreme ones.

message 1552: by Amanda (new)

Amanda | 1 comments I was 12 turning 13 and read The Gunslinger followed by the rest of the dark tower series over that summer. it was incredible. I had never found such a depth in the young adult series I had read before. Stephen King was an unexplored vista. I had to get permission from my parents to get an "adult" library card. I was in love and have been an avid fan ever since!

message 1553: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly Purcell Carrie. The moment it came out in paperback. I think I was a freshman in high school.

Joan (joanofsnark) | 79 comments Carrie was my first Stephen King book. It was 1976 and I was a senior in high school. I’ve been a Constant Reader since.

Tek | 97 comments I probably already responded on this post but since I don't remember...

Mine was The Stand Long and Uncut....looking back it might've been a better idea to start with a smaller novel, but I had recently watched the Stand miniseries from the early 90s and really liked it, and was curious what details the story held that the show couldn't cover. It also took me upwards of 6 months or so to finish and was a bit of a slog at times due to me not being much of a casual reader at the time. But ultimately it turned me onto Kings novels and reading as a hobby in general so Im happy I tackled it.

Good for you! I love when people fall deeply in love with his writing late enough that there are so many fresh reads there for the picking.

Daniele (danielezan) | 24 comments Misery in 1987 and I was immediately hooked!

message 1561: by Derrick (new)

Derrick | 973 comments Cujo and I think I was around 11 years old at the time. I could be wrong about my age but probably too young to be reading something like that in any event. That was the only time I ever read Cujo. I still have that same copy I think. I should read it again it's probably a completely different book lol

message 1562: by Drew (new)

Drew | 5 comments My first Stephen king book was this year The Shining and I have finished 12 of his books so far

I know Cujo is not supposed to be the best example of his writing, but I think it's perfect. Quick paced, tense from almost page one and the ending is no holds barred.

Jos Vill | 4 comments Las 3 después de Medianoche. Me llamo mucho la atención y luego compre más y más libros de SK.

Having read my first King book at such a young age, there's still so many of his books I haven't read yet.

message 1566: by Mary (new)

Mary Kate | 4 comments Dolores Claiborne was my first. Happened to have it in with a bunch of books someone gave me and it sounded interesting. I’ve been a constant reader ever since! Over a year now and just ordered 9 books last week 😊

message 1567: by Beril (new)

Beril (santimantalim) It was Rose madder, I don't even remember how old I was at that time. I even forgot the existence of that book until a few days ago, I'm a little bit sad about reading that from the library tho' I wis I had it on my shelves because I remember it scaring me sooooo good.

message 1568: by br (new)

br (bluewizard_) When I was 10 I tried IT. Dnfed it. I felt it was just too much for my age and that I would have a better experience if I read it later on.

2 years later I tried Carrie, and loved it :)

message 1569: by Anja (new)

Anja Henriksen | 7 comments Thinner ... I was 11 or 12, and it was a perfect first one for me. Different seasons collection wasn't next, and both Thinner and the stories in different seasons are still among my favorites

Murray Moore | 109 comments The Green Mile was my first Stephen King book. I liked how he created a story that felt like an episode of The Twilight Zone.

message 1575: by Scott (new)

Scott Neumann (scottneumann) | 24 comments That was a long time ago... it would have to be 'Salems Lot' it was right after the mini series premiered and everybody couldn't stop talking about at school, after that it was 'Cujo' which happened to be new at the time.

message 1576: by Gabriela (new)

Gabriela (bunny66606) | 3 comments My first book was "Dead zone" and I don't recommend it as a begginer book ( especially when your 12). I bearly finished it, I was so bored (probably because I was super slow reader back then), honestly now I'm thinking maybe I should reread it sometime. The next one was "shining" and it was the book that really started my love to S. Kings work.

message 1577: by Adrian (new)

Adrian Dooley (adox66) | 33 comments The Dead Zone is one of my favorites.

F.C. Schaefer | 174 comments Somebody loaned my mother a paper back copy of The Shining, which she never read because Danielle Steele was her speed, but I picked it up and was hooked on King right then and there.

message 1591: by Pat of Rocks (new)

Pat of Rocks Pet Sematary. Read circa '93. Definitely too young to be reading it, but it lit the fire because over the next couple years I would go on to read IT, Tommyknockers, and Insomnia. King became my first "serial author" to follow.

message 1592: by Jenny (new)

Jenny a.k.a....Jenny from the block | 725 comments My first was Salems Lot follow by the stand (condensed version). From there the rest is history.

message 1593: by Pete (new)

Pete | 7 comments The Talisman in the early 90s when i was a teenager... still one of my all time favorites

message 1594: by Peter (new)

Peter Topside I read IT when I was much, much younger and didn't fully understand parts of it. I took a break for a few years and then did Desperation, which I enjoyed.

message 1595: by Laura (new)

Laura The Green Mile, when I was 17. After that, I think it was Under the Dome. ❤️

message 1596: by Joey (new)

Joey Barlow | 9 comments Mine was Misery, my school friend had bought it in a second hand book shop before we went to watch Jeepers Creepers 2 and we had both forgotten it was in my bag. Because it was the school holidays, I had time to read it over three days before I gave it back to him. I never told him I read it before he did!! I'd also never read a book so fast at that age.

message 1597: by [deleted user] (new)

My first book by King was Finders Keepers. Yes yes, I know that it's the middle book of a trilogy but it captivated me. After all, my parents were in an hour-long line at our local rec center to vote. Lucky for me, there was a spot where people could read quietly. I was beginning to take an interest in Stephen King and I just picked the one with the title that stood out to me the most. And boom, just like that I was hooked.

message 1598: by Julian (new)

Julian | 14 comments Christine - has a special place in my heart. That, IT and Needful Things are my favs.

message 1599: by Joseph (new)

Joseph | 7 comments It. To this day, it's my favorite King Book. I consider it his Stairway to Heaven. I used to read it once a summer when I was in high school/ college. I still say you can properly incorporate all the elements of the novel if you make it into a netflix/ hbo series

message 1600: by Donna (new)

Donna MetcalfTwohig | 4 comments My first introduction to King was the movie Carrie, I then read the Shining and was hooked, I went back and read Carrie and then Salem's lot, and have pretty much read all of his books as they have been released. My all time favorites are the Stand, It, the Talisman, and the Gunslinger series. King is my favorite author!!
