Brett Milam My first was actually his book On Writing and then Cell, so my path to King was quite unconventional and backward compared to most. I'm just now jumping into his older, more known books.

You're in for a treat. BTW, don't be confused by what he says about Misery in On Writing (if you remember it). I misread the comment and it really goofed me up.

Audrina Lane | 2 comments My first Stephen King book was Carrie. It was my first venture away from the Junior section of the Library and I liked the sound of it because it was set in a school. I was 14 at the time and devoured it and that's why I still love reading his books today!

Eat.Sleep.Lift.Read. (misanthropic_scribe) | 1 comments Mine was Desperation. Tak.

message 955: by Vale (new)

Vale (vahyso) Mine was Full Dark, No Stars.

Chris | 2 comments Mile 81 a couple years ago, if that counts as a book, if not, just finished Revival....and was shocked. I want more.

Bespectacledreader | 5 comments I do not know if Green Mile of Pet Sematary ... I was in 6th grade.

message 958: by Marisa (new)

Marisa (marisamira) | 24 comments Mine was The Shining. It's still one of my favorite books of all time.

message 959: by Kathleen (new)

Kathleen My first King book was Cujo. I had never read any book like it before and after that I couldn't get enough. When I finished his works I started on Koontz and Barker.

message 960: by Nathaly (new)

Nathaly (nathalymargareth) It was The shinning... such an amazing book

Glen | 229 comments The Drawing of the Three. Backwards I know. Didn't realize at the time The Gunslinger was first but it drew me in and never let go.

message 962: by Free Palestine (new)

Free Palestine (megabyterose) I am like Brett; my first two were not even well known ones. My first was Cell when I was young, then I read Dreamcatcher a year or two after that. Lol big length difference. And quality in my opinion. I thought Cell was much better.

message 963: by David (new)

David Clemons | 8 comments The first Stephen King book I read was The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon. I think it was actually the first adult novel I ever read. I was home schooled, so my mother forced me to write an essay about it afterwards, which was disappointing, but it didn't stop me from going to get more Stephen King books. Thankfully, I wasn't forced to write about any other Stephen King book.

Dreamcatcher is almost at the bottom of my list of King books. I agree about Cell... it's kind of underrated.

message 965: by Kandice (new)

Kandice | 4387 comments I really enjoyed Cell, but Dreamcatcher left me cold as well. I loved Duddits and his relationship with the boys, but the sh*t weasels just didn't do it for me.

Tamilarasi B Tamil Selvam (tammyselvam) | 1 comments My dad showed me the movie Christine, and I loved it. I didn't know it was based of a book then, and when I found the book in a second-hand bookshop I immediately bought it. Been a die-hard fan ever since.

I really loved Christine... not just the car but the relationship between the kids and King's thoughts about families... dysfunctional and otherwise.

Jeff (thelongwait) | 293 comments Tatiana....
That's a good one to start off with. I feel it's a true representation of his skill as a novelist. 11/22/63 is simply a great story written by a great storyteller, which is something too many people don't appreciate about King: his ability to write nuanced stories with great characters.

Mariya Hristova | 1 comments My first Stephen King book was Carrie, and since then I can not stop reading his books.

W. Dias (wandias) | 1 comments My first was Pet Sematary!

message 972: by Travis (new)

Travis The first Stephen King novel I finished was The Stand. I just loved the epic scope intertwined with the horror. I've been collecting all his novels since then, mostly via used book stores because I wanted to get them all in the same cover style.

The first King novel I remember attempting was The Eyes of the Dragon but I was too young to enjoy it. I still have to go back and read it once I finish some of his other novels.

You are in for a treat. King tells parts of the story through the POV of a dog and is simply genius at it.

message 974: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan My first King book was IT at 14 yrs old. I got hooked on his works and started reading a bunch of them. Then I was reading too much for school and so I stopped for a long while and now in the last few years I've been reading them again and am hooked for life.

message 975: by Karen (new)

Karen My first SK book was also Carrie. I read that when I was 15 and have been hooked to Kings works ever since! I am reading Mr. Mercedes now.

message 978: by Todd (new)

Todd (toddwn) The first I read was one of his short stories from short story collection 'Just After Sunset', then Carrie.

message 979: by Anne (new)

Anne | 8 comments Night Shift, still love the stories and novellas. I read The Stand pretty much right after that and kept going.

message 980: by Claire (new)

Claire Skeleton Crew - I remember reading The Raft out loud to my friends when we were camping, at about thirteen. We were as scared of the petting scene as of the oil slick. Haha!

Randy Eberle | 92 comments Julianne, The Eyes of the Dragon came out in 1987.

message 982: by José (new)

José (lectorconstante19) My first King novel was Bag of Bones, read it when I was 12 years old and loved it.Maybe it isn't his best work but for me it's really special.

I really liked bag of bones... lots of great elements in the story. I need to read it again soon... or maybe get the audio, though King reads it I think, and other than On Writing his narrative efforts have been weak.

message 984: by E. (new)

E. | 242 comments I listened to the audiobook. King does great accents and knows the story nuances and how it should be read. The audio had little snips of the music referred to in the story (old Blues) and some "mood music" that of course wouldn't be in the regular book form. While usually I don't like that, this time it worked.

Thanks for the input E. I'll give it a try. This would also be a great group read I think since not everyone has read it.

Kandice | 4387 comments I've always loved listening to King read his own stuff for the reasons E. mentioned, but also because his nasally voice has somehow become dear to me. It almost feels like a loved one reading to me or something. Talk about a stalker superfan!

message 988: by Nick (new)

Nick Iuppa | 4272 comments I was a little disappointed in King's reading of Rose Madder (the male part) and the female reader was so good he seemed weak by comparison.

message 989: by Heath (new)

Heath Parker | 3 comments Eyes of the Dragon. I still love that book and prefer King's fantasy to his horror because of it.

message 990: by Audrina (new)

Audrina Lane | 2 comments Great book - loved Eyes of the Dragon

Kelsey Ellis My first Stephen King book was Under the Dome. It will probably remain as one of my favorite books.
