Is a book in pristine condition loved or unloved?

That's an interesting definition. I'd say I agree with it, although I'm sure there's a whole faction that doesn't!

I've been looking at my books, thinking about this question, & I can immediately spot the books I love -- they're the worst looking ones, lol.

I disagree...I think you can love your favorite books (and read them very often) and still keep them in reasonably good shape if you're careful. :) And I am, because I'm obsessive like that.

I agree that it's possible. I just don't think I can. In any case, so far, no matter how hard I try, I haven't been able to.

But that's kind of how I am in general.

Kristin, I'm with you. I treasure every book I own--and there are tons of them. It galls me to see someone lay an open book facedown to keep their place when it's so simple to mark your place. A magazine tearout works for me sometime since I can't keep up with the pretty bookmarks I've picked up. Perhaps I could be considered anal about keeping them pristine, but...there you are. Oh, by the way, I read my keepers over & over and never loan them out for fear of losing them.
