Frida Fantastic (book blogger) (fridafantastic) | 7 comments Hey all,

It's Frida again. I've been looking around for other bloggers/reviewers that review self-published speculative fiction/science fiction/fantasy. I was thinking about how book reviews are approached from the author's perspective, and I'd assume it's pretty time consuming checking up on each blog's review policy only to discover they only review regency romances and paranormal romance when you've got a military SF thriller.

There's already great indie blogger/reviewer lists out there like Simon Royle's, but I wanted something that's more relevant to speculative fiction authors and readers. So here's my list: Indie SF Reviewers

Feel free to suggest blogs to be add on or details to change.

Cheers,
Frida

Robert J. Sullivan (robertjsullivan) | 8 comments I was able to get a review on my scifi/thriller book from SFBooks Reviews. Their criteria is here: http://sfbook.com/contact-us.htm I also got a review through MysteryNet.com because my book is a mystery. I wrote to Las Vegas Review-Journal and they agreed to review my book, but I haven't heard from them yet (after 2+ months). I wrote first before sending my book.

Have you heard of Kirkus Indie? It's a subsidiary of Kirkus Reviews (which doesn't review POD books). They provide honest reviews - and charge $400+ for it. I haven't done that.

Good luck.

Frida Fantastic (book blogger) (fridafantastic) | 7 comments Charging $400+ for a review? That's a steep price.

Karen A. Wyle (kawyle) | 39 comments I noticed that the SFBooks Reviews FAQ has a number of grammar/punctuation errors. Does this bother anyone else? I wonder if some potential readers discount the review contents on this basis.

Robert J. Sullivan (robertjsullivan) | 8 comments Oh, yes, it bothers me. I put some of the review on my website - but first I corrected the typos.

I can't really complain. If someone gives you a present, you don't complain about how it's wrapped.

Frida Fantastic (book blogger) (fridafantastic) | 7 comments @ Robert J.: that's probably the best move.

@ Karen: It depends on how well the reader knows SFBooks. If the reviewer has some name recognition and I trust their judgment, I'm pretty forgiving of a few typos.

Adam Bender (adambender) | 9 comments Thanks for this list! I've been wondering where to submit my dystopian novel for review.

I've been reviewed by American Chronicle, though I don't think they are limited to sci-fi.

Tim Ellis (doce) | 5 comments I've got a list of review sites that I'm adding to all the time. If you want me to add your site leave a link:

It kept me busy today.

Keryl Raist (kerylraist) | 54 comments I review all flavors of indie books on my blog, http://www.topublishornotto.blogspot.com. But, at this point with my to be read list stretching well into 2012, I'm getting very picky about what I decide to review.

If you're willing to put up with the wait, and have a really great novel, I'll be happy to add you to the list. (You can see how long it is by clicking my name and checking the indie book review shelf.)

And while I might like to get paid for my reviews, I certainly don't charge for them! If someone is asking money for a review, that's a pretty good sign for you to go to the next name on your list. For example, I've run into a decent number of readers who do not trust Kirkus anymore, because they are getting paid to review.

Danika Dinsmore (danika_dinsmore) | 5 comments Hi Frida (and everyone else)

I've been lurking in this group for a while. Thanks for posting your indie review lists. I'll check them out to see if I have any further suggestions. I'm not as sure about self-published books, because my fantasy was published by a small press and there are some reviewers who will do small press, but not self-published. Like Rise Reviews whose philosophy is to review "non-pro" books (their term for indie publishers I guess) but not self-published.

S.J. (starshipsandaliens) | 1 comments Hi Frida

Thanks for posting the list - you might like to add my review site, www.starshipsandaliens.com. I review family friendly sci-fi with starships and/or aliens in it, indie/self pubbed included.

message 16: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Cotterill (rachelcotterill) I'm an indie author and also have a blog at http://blog.rachelcotterill.com - my blog isn't just about writing/books but I post all my Goodreads reviews each month, and do occasional interviews/features with authors I particularly like. Will also cross-post reviews on Amazon, Smashwords, etc.

I like fast-paced, action-filled plots and realistic 'greyscale' morality. I can be a bit picky (like anyone else, my TBR is long and growing!) but if your book is my sort of thing, and I enjoy your sample, indie solidarity will get you bumped up the list ;)

Rachel

Brittan | 2 comments Hi, my name is Brittan Knight and I have a co-authored a sci-fi ebook called Broken Chain Volume One The Rescue of the Libertolian.

I am trying to find some blog reviewers that may be interested in reading it and posting about it on their blog. Or post a review here.

Thanks

I hang out in the indie ebook circles, and from what I can tell, we don't make a big distinction between small press and self-published. From my couple of months of reviewing indie ebooks, "small press" isn't an indicator of quality unless it's a small press I already trust. There are small presses out there who can't format their ebooks worth crap while there are self-published authors who are excellent writers, skilled marketers, and know their ebook technology inside and out. To me, these are all just different business models that I could care less about. The book itself is the final judge of all things quality.

Noor Jahangir | 21 comments I'm doing book reviews for fantasy and sf books. I tend to review the books I've bought myself but am considering taking on submissions from authors. I publish my reviews on my blog (http://noorajahangir.wordpress.com), on Goodreads, Amazon, Smashwords and Guardian Books (UK Broadsheet).
