Yup, it does. I really was floored by the amount of misogyny and domestic violence in it - even moreso than her Twilight series.

Gag. A list of my least favorite books. I never understood the pull of Heathcliff. He's more than a jerk, he's a total asshat. I have never been able to get into these Victorian "romances" - but I do understand that the terminology for the word "romance" in literature has changed throughout the years. But I'd rather be alone than be bothered with men like that.

message 103: by Bets (new)

Bets (betsdavies) I have to admit, you well laid out, beyond where I read, what creeped me out big time about Twilight. I actually stopped reading after the "ruffians" as I would add uber-supernatural-stalker to emotionally abusive. Having been in a type of emotionally abusive relationship myself and had one of my best friends go through, sequentially, an emotionally abusive and then a physically and emotionally abusive relationship, and teaching high school and trying to deal with some of the teen's relationships while staying in my role--yeah. It seriously, seriously wigs me.

message 104: by Bets (new)

Bets (betsdavies) I never got any of the Victorians. I like Jane Eyre for the revolution and feminist bent it had for it's time. Studying lit, it is progressive. But yeah, not into any of those guys. Bleah. Can't read Austen at all.

message 105: by [deleted user] (new)

Yeah, the only Austen I have ever liked was Northanger Abbey. I think that the power dynamic between men and women in romance has nearly always been off, as someone who casually reads romance novels (mostly for laughs). Indeed, I would say that my biggest defense for the Twilight novels is simply just that. Compared to any romance you pick up in that small section of the grocery store or pharmacy, it isn't that bad. Rape = love is a common theme in the more adult romances, and I can't think of many books where the man wasn't at least a little emotionally abusive, and who faced no repercussions for it. Twilight just got famous.

message 106: by Traci (new)

Traci @ Alexandra-I swear you've read the same book Iam. lol. I read some paranormal romance for a light read. Some are worse than others. But now Iam reading Kiss of a Demon King. Twilight has nothing on the abuse in this book. I can't figure out how rape should be sexy to a woman...And ASoIaF is supposed to be too much for us to handle?
By the way characters I hate-I finished Royal Assassin loved it hated Regal. Also finished A Clash of Kings. Hated Stannis & Renley. I guess I have more of a problem with pig headed stupidity than evilness in that series.

message 107: by Mach (new)

Mach | 572 comments I like Stannis, he is hard but atleast he is fair. Renly was just a pretty boy with high ambitions.

message 108: by Ian (new)

Ian Peterson (kolonelklink) Yeah Stannis is alright in my book, but then I focus all my hate on Cersei Lannister.

message 109: by mark (new)

mark monday (majestic-plural) | 380 comments i think stannis is fascinating. i also love the secret gay romance between renly & loras. (view spoiler)

i reserve my hate for cersei, for the most part. The Mountain too, of course, but he is less of a character and more of a scary plot device.

message 110: by Traci (new)

Traci I just wanted to bash Stannis, Renley, & Robb's heads together. They needed to work together. I know if they all worked together for the common good & overthrew evil there'd be no series. But I hate it when basically good people do something dumb.

message 111: by Mach (new)

Mach | 572 comments I didn't get any gay vibes from Renly, why do you think he is gay mark? because of the rainbow guard? I think that was just a name.

message 112: by mark (new)

mark monday (majestic-plural) | 380 comments er, no, not because of the rainbow guard! LOL. it is more than just vibes, martin specifically hints at a relationship between renley and loras, all throughout the first and second books. at one point, stannis even makes a comment about his brother's predilections.

however, it is all very subtle and i can see how it could be easily overlooked.

message 113: by mark (last edited Apr 23, 2011 01:01PM) (new)

mark monday (majestic-plural) | 380 comments i just did a quick scan on google for "renly loras gay" and came up with a lot of references....and a handy webpage that delivers a guide to all the hints:

message 115: by [deleted user] (new)

I like Stannis, too. He's just old-school, hard-core. Renly...meh.

And I dislike Cersei as well. Not for being evil, but for her stupidity in certain instances.

message 116: by Valerie (new)

Valerie (versusthesiren) | 357 comments I also liked Stannis! I disliked Cersei at first, but realized that I was probably supposed to dislike her, and then I grew to appreciate how excellent her character was. Definitely not likable, but memorable.

message 117: by mark (last edited Apr 23, 2011 03:17PM) (new)

mark monday (majestic-plural) | 380 comments as i've mentioned before, i'm still only 2 books in, but cersei's evil is so...flat, i guess. it is not monotonous like joffrey's, but there's a shallowness to her character that works well but also makes me dislike her a lot. she's a good villain in that regard. although i understand that we get to see the world through her eyes, later in the series. i also like what the actress in the tv show has done with her, at least in the first episode. she appears to be more sympathetic and complicated, which is great in a villain.

stannis is just a badass. an unimaginative, judgmental bore who sees the world in skewed but black-and-white terms...but a badass, nonetheless. he fascinates me.

i enjoyed renly a lot, his character amused me. but i like him in the way that i like theon...i sort of get a kick out of seeing him fail, or at least not be as awesome as he thinks he is. they are both very "real" characters to me, and interesting. but they are also bozos, and i enjoy watching bozos stumble. does that make me a bad person?

message 118: by Sam (new)

Sam (SamieLynn421) The one character that I have ever really despised would have to be Sebastian (Jonathan, really) from The Mortal Instruments. Don't get me wrong, I like a good villain, but he mostly just annoyed me. Whereas Valentine had a bit more depth to him, Sebastian was just . . . there. He reminded me of a very irritating bug that kept buzzing until it was swatted. And I understand that he was "naturally evil" so to speak, but he still made me want to smack his head off.

Jessie Leigh (msjessie) Kolonelklink wrote: "Yeah Stannis is alright in my book, but then I focus all my hate on Cersei Lannister."

But evil she may be, you cannot deny she's interesting and she's got style. I hate Cersei, don't get me wrong, but I enjoy doing it. She's the bad guy so be the BAD guy, twirl your mustache and do all the villainous deeds. I'll take a crafty, compelling antagonist over a dumb, stolid one anyday.

Spoilers people, spoilers. Most of us have read classics but some folks here haven't and telling them of a characters death isn't cool.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 5387 comments Just put a note before you mention something like a character's death something like:

SPOILER BELOW

will do..

You know, in Harry Potter I really disliked Snape

*********** SPOILER BELOW ************************

I mean I always expected him to turn out to be "a good guy" and all, but he was still a creep. I never understood why Dumbledore let him get away with the way he treated the students????

Big blind spot for Dumbledore.

She owes you a soda.

And I get half!

message 129: by Tracey (new)

Tracey (stewartry) It'd better be a Big Gulp, if you and Grant get half.

message 130: by whimsicalmeerkat (new)

whimsicalmeerkat | 0 comments is it a problem if the soda also contains whiskey?

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 5387 comments Wouldn't that be a whiskey and soda?

message 132: by whimsicalmeerkat (new)

whimsicalmeerkat | 0 comments I don't know, but apparently my whiskey & ginger ale combined last night with Ambien to cause me to both get up at 3:30 AM and use an ear wax removal kit and send various drunken IMs to my boyfriend, one of which included "you like ajdddddddddddddd I fid myself wanting to know Sometimes becase wha we seed oesn;t fut"

I apparently retain my ability to spell and edit much better when texting.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 5387 comments Whiskey and Ginger ale?

message 134: by whimsicalmeerkat (new)

whimsicalmeerkat | 0 comments Yep. I tend towards avoiding caffeine. It's a surprisingly good combination.

message 135: by Jason (new)

Jason (darkfiction) | 3204 comments Jack Daniels and Ginger Ale is actually a drink. It has a name, but I can't remember what it is. Something dumb, like Ginger Jacks or something.

message 136: by [deleted user] (new)

*sigh* I can't drink whiskey in mixed company. *mumbles and kicks rocks*

message 137: by Jason (new)

Jason (darkfiction) | 3204 comments LOL Rum is my evil nemesis, of which I cannot drink in mixed company.

message 138: by Amanda (new)

Amanda M. Lyons (amandamlyons) I seem to be one of those folks who can't stand beer and only like things with either little to no flavor like Vodka or Gin or things with odd flavors like Southern Comfort and Vermouth.

message 139: by whimsicalmeerkat (new)

whimsicalmeerkat | 0 comments Most waiters/bartenders from whom I've ordered it just call it a Jack & Ginger. I just said whiskey in this case because I am working through a bottle of Jim Beam that I bought because it was a couple bucks cheaper than the Jack and I was broke that day. I also like Gentleman Jack, Woodford Reserve, and Jameson's. I'll drink Maker's Mark, but it just doesn't do anything for me. Kinda like the Jim Beam. Not my top choice.

I like 100-proof Southern Comfort, but not the regular kind.

The "not in mixed company" comments intrigue me a little bit. Do you harass all females within range, or is it just a gentlemanly restraint idea? I say this as someone prone to becoming crude, as some would see it, when drunk, to cut a long description short.

message 140: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, *good karma* (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 7282 comments I think that when Grant says "I can't drink whiskey in mixed company" he means "I'm not allowed to drink whiskey in any company." LOL

Especially around garden gnomes. And Targets. And sausages.

*snicker*

message 143: by [deleted user] (last edited May 01, 2011 10:23AM) (new)

It was a Walmart and it was a summer sausage :P

And yes sometime a few months ago I listed the various organizations/people/objects/animals I'm not allowed to drink whiskey around. Denae, Soco is my drink of choice but most assuredly falls into the category of things I must not drink outside of a barred room. Fortunately I have a big enough personality that I can be fun with a room full of drunks without being drunk myself ;)

message 144: by [deleted user] (new)

Oh I totally missed your question, Denae. Umm...I lack inhibition by nature as is. When I drink whiskey, I lose the little inhibition remaining as well as any desire for self preservation. Couple those losses with a flirtacious, pranking, silly nature and hijinks, lawsuits and a variety of molested inanimate objects arise.

Jason (darkfiction) | 3204 comments Denae, I've only drank rum twice in my life, and each time I blacked out and everyone who was partying with me looked at me funny the next day. Apparently, rum makes me go off the deep end a little. LOL
