The publisher Gianluca has marked down a few dozen books to $0.00 today. The book covers are not fancy, but the content appears to be fine.

After downloading the ones you want, be sure to check those pages again later, or tomorrow, in case they mark down more books. Last time they did this, there were about 200 free books.

Sligo McKluge (sligo_mckluge) | 409 comments Not a classic, but it may be of interest to someone:
The Impeachment of Donald Trump

It's a collection of documents regarding the current impeachment process. It was published on January 10, so it appears to be a lot of documents from the House investigation, plus the entire Mueller Report, which is about 50% of this volume.

I downloaded it. Yep, it's a really dry read. Says it takes 29 hours 33 minutes to read. The opposite of an "unputdownable" novel. Enjoy!

Today's just-released or recently-discounted freebies listed below are by the authors Jack London, Anthony Trollope, Edgar Allan Poe, William Morris, and H. P. Lovecraft.

And I am not the only one who has asked you this.

I very much appreciate the free titles that Sligo McKluge (and others) post here. However, I receive the updates as an email and if only covers are listed without titles also it appears in my email as html codes only and I can't see what is on offer without visiting Goodreads.

A simple solution is to list the titles of the books too and then people who get email notifications or have vision issues can read the titles more easily. Many thanks to Sligo and others for many wonderful free links posted in the past, I have taken advantage of several of the large collections.

Sligo McKluge (sligo_mckluge) | 409 comments "I guess you don't care about people who have visions problems."

That's an unnecessary insult. I was trying out a new template to save time when posting a lot of books. So the experiment failed. There's no need to be rude to me about it.

I'm not a publisher and am not paid in any way for my almost-daily posts in the Free Books group. My reason for doing this is to enable everyone to read the classics, even when they can't afford to buy a lot of books. Also, I used to enjoy the camaraderie with fellow readers on the "discounted books" list.

It does take a little time out of my day every day to post here. Looks like it's time for a break.

For Doug and those who have written to me privately: thanks for the kind words. I may come back some day. Here's my final post for now, a link to a new publisher who is offering 25 classics and collections. Sorry that I do not feel like posting a list of the 25 titles & authors.

Thanks for your work in the past, will look forward to seeing you here again someday hopefully. I believe in treating others with respect, sorry someone had a bad day and insulted you when you were providing a valuable service. I picked up 4 collections from that link you just posted, currently I have been reading some Zane Grey westerns and so the two western collections were right up my alley.

Sligo McKluge (sligo_mckluge) | 409 comments Thanks, Doug. We all have bad days, and I'm not letting that person's bad day drive me away. Mostly the time commitment required to contribute is the best reason for me to stop doing this for awhile.

When I have time, I will set up a new discussion group focused on free books in the public domain (copyright expired), since that is my main interest. It means the books will mostly be classic literature, and all of it published at least 95 years ago. New authors will not be allowed to post self-promotions in this group that is for old books only.

I'll be sure to post a note here when the discussion group is established, along with a warning that not all posts in the new group will necessarily be formatted for text-only email. This will enable me to post more material quickly in the format of my choice, and the email subscribers can avoid the new group if the formatting displeases them.

In the spirit of collaboration, I wonder if you, Doug, or someone else would like to participate in posting free classics in the public domain to *this* group. I would be happy to send you almost-daily lists of ASIN numbers of the latest releases or discounted-to-free classics that I find. I'm continuing to seek out these books to download myself and to share with friends. Since the research is already done, perhaps someone else could take the time to type out and post the author/title lists here?

I'd ask Randy to include all newly-free classics on his wonderful lists, but Randy does enough for us already!

Here's one more freebie, just published yesterday. Instead of my usual direct link to Amazon, this link comes from the Goodreads tool for posting books. It looks up the ASIN, but does not display the full title in the post. This is the quickest way to add books here, by letting Goodreads post partial titles and no author. Not so useful to people like me who read posts on the Goodreads discussion groups, and want to click once to go directly to the Amazon product page.

The Adventure Collection: Treasure Island, The Jungle Book, Gulliver's Travels....

I used to type in the genres, too: "Here's a batch of science fiction", etc. You could help readers by doing the same on your posts, if you feel like it. Randy does it!

Is there a category on Amazon that would include all of them?

message 2445: by Sligo McKluge (new)

Sligo McKluge (sligo_mckluge) | 409 comments Regarding the free classic literature to be found on amazon.com, Randy wrote: "Is there a category on Amazon that would include all of them?"

There really isn't a single dependable category. Under "Literature & Fiction" is the category "Classics". This category includes some modern classics, which I think would be fine mixed with "old classics" on your lists, Randy. However, a lot of the classics I find are listed under other categories, such as "Mystery, Thriller & Suspense".

Furthermore, some publishers of free books choose inappropriate categories. One of the categories for this free copy of Little Women is "Historical African Fiction". And this edition of Jack London's The Call of the Wild is in the category "Women Writers".

I have a theory concerning willful miscategorization of free books, but this post is too long already.

message 2447: by Randy (new)

Randy Harmelink | 2930 comments Sligo McKluge wrote: "There really isn't a single dependable category."

One issue that would arise with my process is that the same classic can be published again and again, by various people. So it would be difficult to automate a "newly free" list.

Sligo McKluge (sligo_mckluge) | 409 comments Randy wrote: One issue that would arise with my process is that the same classic can be published again and again, by various people. So it would be difficult to automate a "newly free" list."

I can see why this would not work on your lists.

I imagine the reason for listing only "newly free" books is because avid readers who've been downloading books for years are looking for fresh material. They would find your lists extremely useful.

My tendency is to make useful lists for the ebook newbies, too. For various reasons, there are many who have not started reading ebooks until recently. Some are just starting to download ebooks the very day I posted that 10th "new release" of Little Women. That's why I post it the 10th time, while joking about the rash of new versions of the same book. The first through ninth versions by other publishers may have already gone up in price, and I want the person who just joined us today to have a shot at the 10th free edition of it.

I figure the veteran readers can just skip over posts about ebooks they have previously downloaded. To catch the eye of the veteran readers of classic ebooks, I often highlight fresh material by saying "I've never seen free ebooks by this author before."

I've stopped posting book lists here, and will instead focus on the new discussion topic about free classics on Kindle. Newbies and veterans can find the material there.

New Goodreads dicussion topic:

Sales and Cheap Books > Free classics & popular literature in the public domain

To save time, I may not always write out lists of titles and authors there, and may post only the book covers that link to the Amazon product page. Also, I'll sometimes post URLs to longer lists of free classic books instead of typing all the titles and authors in my posts.

I hope others will post their classic lit finds there. I'm especially keen on highlighting books whose copyrights have just expired, making the literature free to all for the first time.

Tip for newbies: before bookmarking the Goodreads URL in your browser's Favorites list, be sure to sort the posts by date, with newest at the top.
