Books from university presses can be dry and boring, or quite interesting. You can download some free ones and judge for yourself. There are hundreds available for free, but I only post the most recent ones published, or older books just marked down to $0.00.

Recently released:

High-Tech Trash: Glitch, Noise, and Aesthetic Failure (Rhetoric & Public Culture: History, Theory, Critique Book 1) by Carolyn L. Kane

The Big Gamble: The Migration of Eritreans to Europe by Milena Belloni

Recently discounted to $0.00:

The Train Journey: Transit, Captivity, and Witnessing in the Holocaust (War and Genocide Book 13) by Simone Gigliotti

Basic and Applied Research: The Language of Science Policy in the Twentieth Century (European Conceptual History Book 4) edited by David Kaldewey and Désirée Schauz

Crime and Criminal Justice in Modern Germany (Studies in German History Book 16) by Richard F. Wetzell

Some classics, recently discounted to FREE. Nice to see some different material, rather than the same old books by the most popular authors.

The Big Bow Mystery by Israel Zangwill

Diary of a Drug Fiend by Aleister Crowley

The Jungle by Upton Sinclair

The Riddle of the Sands by Erskine Childers

The Saga of Pappy Gunn by George Churchill Kenney

Masterpieces of Mystery by Anna Katharine Green

The Golden Bough: A Study of Magic and Religion by James George Frazer

The Sheik by Edith Maude Hull. Fun fact: two vendors are selling a paperback version of it for around $500. Published in 1921, a popular silent film was based on this controversial "romance novel". Read the wikipedia article to learn more. Too bad the publisher RMB put a lame cover on their Kindle version.

Released today:

Franz Kafka: The Complete Novels - includes 3 novels:
- The Trial
- The Castle
- Amerika

Classics recently discounted to FREE:

The Meditations of the Emperor Marcus Aurelius Antoninus

The Apology of Socrates by Plato

The Communist Manifesto by Karl Marx

Jude the Obscure by Thomas Hardy

50 Masterpieces you have to read before you die - like many free books, this one is poorly formatted. The text is fine within each novel, but there is no table of contents and no hyperlinks to the individual titles. I downloaded it to see if how hard it would be to read a classic that is not elsewhere on my device. At the beginning of the volume is a list of all the authors, and I chose Henry Fielding. I used the search option to locate his name. Because of the large size of this ebook, it took my device 7 minutes to find the title page of his novel "Amelia", which was about halfway through the volume. YMMV.

Jane Austen: The Complete Novels

The Prisoner of Zenda (The Pieter Van In Mysteries) by Anthony Hope

Mujercitas (Spanish edition) by Louisa May Alcott

The last one is my pick of the day, recommended for anyone who wants to practice their Spanish by reading an entire novel. Little Women (Mujercitas) is written in simple language, and is easier to read than, say, a classic philosophy book translated to Spanish.

Today I found yet another new (and temporarily free) edition of Little Woman. It's got the goofiest cover since the ebook of "A Christmas Carol" with Santa and Rudolph the reindeer on the book's cover. I could add a category on my ebook reader called "books with weird covers". I don't know of any characters in Little Women who wore a short dress and red high heels. Enjoy!

Sligo McKluge (sligo_mckluge) | 409 comments My day would not seem complete unless I post the latest new editions of Little Women. Anyone can publish a Kindle book on Amazon, and it's legal to make new editions of public domain works. So, to get a cut of the royalties that Amazon pays when Kindle Unlimited readers download your book, you may as well copy and publish a trending book. Slap a lame cover on it and watch the pennies roll in!

Here are the 9th and 10th free copies published since Dec. 30. I love that the publisher of the first one notes that it's for ages 1-77. If you're 78+, find something else to read :)

Little Women by Louisa May Alcott

The Complete Little Women: Little Women, Good Wives, Little Men, Jo's Boys by Louisa May Alcott

Here's one more free classic:

The Art of War: The Strategy of Sun Tzu
