Chasing Fire by Nora Roberts

Little else in life is as dangerous as fire jumping. Flying past towering pillars of smoke, parachuting down to the edge of an all-consuming blaze, shoveling and sawing for hours upon hours, days at a time, all to hold the line and push back against the raw power of Mother Nature.

But there's also little else as thrilling - at least to Rowan Tripp. The Missoula smoke jumpers are one of the most exclusive fire-fighting squads in the nation, and the job is in Rowan's blood: her father is a legend in the field. She's been fighting fires since her eighteenth birthday. At this point, returning to the wilds of Montana for the season feels like coming home - even with reminders of the partner she lost last season still lingering in the air.

Fortunately, this year's rookie crop is among the strongest ever - and Gulliver Curry's one of the best. He's also a walking contradiction, a hotshot firefighter with a big vocabulary and a winter job at a kid's arcade. He came to Missoula to follow in the footsteps of Lucas "Iron Man" Tripp, yet he's instantly more fascinated by his hero's daughter. Rowan, as a rule, doesn't hook up with other smoke jumpers, but Gull is convinced he can change her mind. And damn if he doesn't make a good case to be an exception to the rule.

Everything is thrown off balance, though, when a dark presence lashes out against Rowan, looking to blame someone for last year's tragedy. Rowan knows she can't complicated things with Gull - any distractions in the air or on the ground could be lethal. But if she doesn't find someone she can lean on when the heat gets intense, her life may go down in flames.

I'm 47 pages in and so far I like it. Rowan is a kick ass heroine and Gull is an interesting guy. Good chemistry between them so far and the story setup is interesting. I'm looking forward to see where this story is headed. Just wish I didn't have to go to work now and wait to read more till later.

The excerpt is fantastic, pulls you right in, can't wait to actually have the book in my hot little hands and read it. I love that it's based around a unique field, smoke jumpers. And it seems that the banter and build up of story are fantastic as well.

My only conflict is whether I should just jump in and buy the hardcover or wait till paperback.

Nora is one of only 2 authors I buy Hardcover for. I got it for $18 at Target...which yeah, sucks but Norse is well worth it. Is there a library you can get it from?

159 pages in. Still enjoying the book. The only thing I'm iffy on is the issue of the bad guys identity. NR is either going with a super obvious villain - in which case I'd be a little annoyed as how obvious it is - or she's trying to trick us readers into thinking it's the obvious when it's really not - which would make things more interesting.

I saw it on the shelf in the book isle in my local supermarket last week (somehow they always get slightly earlier releaes) and it was $27.95, so that made me hesitate a bit to grab it. But Target has it for $19 and Borders has it for $18.95, so now I'm thinking I'm definitely jumping in. I have the past three single titles (including The Search) in Hardcover and paperback, so I figure why stop now :-)

Amar | 134 comments Just finished it this morning and it's a keeper!! Loved the way Rowan and Gull worked/romanced together...he was just the sweetest guy! Somehow I really got into the fire jumping topic, can't believe how crazy-brave these guys are!! Loved the secondary romance between Lucas and Ella....and the ending just had me in tears for some reason.

Good solid book...onto the next trilogy/quartet, whatever she has in store!!

I finally finished. Damn work for not giving me time to read.

Anyway, I enjoyed the book quite a bit. Loved Rowan and Gull. Both were wonderful characters. And it was a good solid storyline. My main two complaints would be the smoke jumper lingo that I got lost on a lot andthe lack of an epilogue. I hate that were left not knowing what happened to a secondary character.

Anyway, I'll get a full review written tomorrow.

Miriam | 36 comments Just finished!!! (could only read during lunch time at work and before going to bed ) Loved it!!!! I can see some of Dallas in Ro and some of Roarke in Gull. Loved the storyline and I agree with Isis, some of the lingo threw me off; but still a great book. Definitely made my top 10!!!

Amar | 134 comments Was just thinking earlier that Rowan reminded a little of Eve!

Kerri Levine | 96 comments I finished last night. Stayed up to finish, in fact. :) It was really good. I can definitley see Rowan and Gull as variations of Eve and Roarke, though I didn't think of it at the time. I got this from th library, but may have to get my own copy for a reread.

I enjoyed this one.

I liked Rowan, though she's the prickly irritable heroine type, and she's amazon tall and built, both types which tend to not be my fave and are a bit harder for me to relate to.
Gull is just a sweetie on the outside, while solid and strong in the core. The romance with him and Rowan is really smoldering and sweet.

The romance with Rowan's dad Lucas and Ella is adorable. Very sweet 2nd Tier romance.

I thought I would be annoyed with abundance of fire jumping details, but alas I wasn't put off by it, at least not too much. I guess it's cause I already braced myself for a lot of fire jumping details and lingo. I actually felt the details gave more texture to the characters and setting and helped move the plot along instead of detracting from it. Also the fire jumping details weren't just mundane descriptions of someone's work routine filling up pages.

I also figured the "bad guy" out from the beginning, but it was still cool to see the development of that angle.

Overall, another Nora keeper!

Stacy | 41 comments For me, Chasing Fire wasn't a five star but it wasn't a three star either. i loved Rowan and Goll's characters and the characters that were a part of the "family" that they were in. I guess it may be because i didn't really understand all the fire talk that went into the fire jumping, and i like to know what i'm reading about. I too figured out who the bad guy was early on, and i hate that because i would rather be surprised up until the last chapter.

Lauren (laurenjberman) | 86 comments Just finished. While it is enjoyable I don't think its one of her best. I did love the dialogue and banter between the smoke jumpers.

Michelle (michellemk) | 1 comments On page 330 and feel like a lazy pants. Have been waiting all day to throw on the pj's and cuddle up to read. I am loving this book so far, and can not get enough of it.

Jennifer C i finished this book in August and really enjoyed it. It has stuck with me so much that earlier this week, when we had smoke and ash from the Minnesota wildfires make their way down to the Chicago area (amazing right?), I totally thought of this book and the people who were fire jumping. The book really made an impression on me. Another great read from Ms. Roberts. I can't wait for the new series. I already have it pre-ordered for my nook and I have the new single release (coming out in April of next year) on my wish list on Paperbackswap.com. :)

message 18: by Cheryle (new)

Cheryle I didn't really care for this one. While I liked Gull, I didn't find Rowan to be a very likable heroine, and the story itself spent so much time on the fire jumping aspect. While I admire the research Nora does into her topics, I'd like more romance, please!

Amanda (purplerose) I find it interesting that all you loved the book. For me, it was okay. I've read almost everything Nora's written, except the most recent Dallas book and the first book in the trilogy she's starting. I guessed who the bad guy was as soon as he was mentioned and even worse, I feel like all her stand-alone books are turning out the same. She has a heroine who is soft and hurting on the inside but rough and tough on the outside. Everyone takes her at face value except one or two close friends or family members, and the hero. The one who falls in love a quarter of the way through the book. Every. Single. Time. It's just getting formulaic and kind of annoying. Roberts is my favorite author and I expect more from her.

I certainly can't disagree with you that lately her stand alones seem to all follow the same formula. The settings are different-which make the books interesting and worth reading for me because I enjoy learning about the different backgrounds. But I have to admit that in many of her earlier books the building of the characters and their stories are much better. Some of her earlier books that I read over and over are so rich in character development whether they are suspense or romance. When the story is over, you don't want it to end--you want more.
Having said that, I still enjoyed CHasing Fire even though I figured out the villian and Gull and Rowan's relationship was more about sex than about who they really were and how the relationship developed. It was a fun read, but not her absolute best.

I have to agree that the more recent works (well actually since J.D. Robb) have seemed more plot driven instead of character driven. But then character driven stories like the Quartet and Inn at Boonsboro get jabs because of 'lack of suspense'. In any event, the mystery/suspense/romance titles like Chasing Fire actually do give a lot of insight into the characters and character development, that's why there are so many wonderful details of them doing their day to day work/routine, and having dialog about ordinary things.

In any event, I enjoy and love it all!

I do love how she (apparently) does a lot of research on the subject of each of her books. And I do continue to read them. :-) I just finished The Next Always, which was fabulous, of course. Another of the reasons she's my favorite author is that she has an amazing way with dialogue, which for me, can make or break a book.

I didn't like High Noon, either. I guess even our favorite authors will occasionally write something we don't like.

Kris (My Novelesque Life) (mynovelesquelife) Not my fav - I felt like there was TOO much info.
