Terry (Ter05 TwiMoms/ MundieMoms) (ter05) | 292 comments I am reading The Bronze Horseman now.. on page 190. I am kind of struggling with it, but will read it. I know it is me and not the book. I started Outlander because I love anything Scotland, prefer my historical novels pre 1800 and an intrigued by time travel. I also am a country girl and (with a few exceptions of course) much prefer my books to take place in forests, mountains, castles and country huts with lots of grass and open spaces. I also have only read two books that take place in Russia and found them totally depressing, so for me TBH has some strikes against it. I am not hating it or anything but it probably just isn't the setting for me to really enjoy the story. I enjoy even a mediocre book about Scotland!

I haven't read The Bronze Horseman but it sounds intriguing. Does it have time travel?

Yeah, no time travel. It's a story set in Leningrad, Russia during WWII. The series has 3 books that are centered around Alexander(a soldier in the Red Army) and Tatiana. It's a book of love, war, death and sacrifices. It's just a gut-wrenching, epic love story that really touched me.

Actually, it was first recommended to me in this group(did I thank y'all for that? If not- Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!) and I really adored the books(they are now my 2nd favorite, wanna guess the 1st:)?), I got sucked in about 20 pages in, but I heard some people didn't like them. So, I suggest you try b\c you could like them, and if you don't, then you, uh, don't?

I'll have to give it a try. Am I the only one who almost dreads to start a series that I think will be so gripping? I get so caught up them that it distracts me from other things I should be doing. Like family. And writing. I swear, I was almost late turning in copy edits on my second book because I was reading An Echo in the Bone.

Then again, I'm still in high school, and I don't have a job, nor any big responsibilities family-wise:D.

I know, it's bliss, right? The only things I need to worry about are studying and chores, and that doesn't take up a lot of my day. I do however spend a lot time on goodreads, so I don't read as much as I used to.

Throw in the blogs and interviews I have to do and it's hard for me to get anything done. I'm interviewed in two places today and I have to keep checking for comments. One poor site hasn't had any. I feel bad for the interviewer. I've gotten NO writing done today, although I did brainstorm and break fix a plot point.

Having a hubby and kids is just tiring, but amazing. They're worth all the trouble. :) I hope they think that about me.

I always thought being a writer leaves you with flexible hours. Like, you can work whenever you want, for however long you want, as long as you finish by the deadline. I figured it isn't that stressful. I guess I thought wrong, then, lol?

message 61: by Mimi (new)

Mimi Smith | 199 comments So, I've been thinking about starting Cave of The Clan Bear, by Jean M. Auel, so I'm looking for your thoughts. Is it a romance? Is the whole series about the same character? I've heard it's set in the Neolithic era, or something and I'm not sure how I feel about it.

message 62: by Gwennie, biblioholic (last edited May 10, 2011 07:20AM) (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 3151 comments It has romance in it, but not until half way through the second book.

The whole series is about Ayla, the same character.

It is set in the small span of time when Neanderthals and Homo Sapiens were on the earth together.

It's definitely a historical fiction that is highly researched. It sounds rough at first, but I absolutely LOVED books 1-4. Especially the first one. The rest are good, but I found them redundant.

If you decide to start it, this is the best time because the last book in the series has been released. And prior to that last book it was about 9 years between installments due to all the research and the length.

I highly highly recommend at least the 1st book, but again I loved 1-4.

I'll be reading them all again soon so I can read the last book.

Actually being a writer does have a lot of benefits, in addition to doing something I love. I can be flexible and I can work in my pajamas if I want, but writing just takes a lot of time, so if you have a family it can get tight. But you're right, it's flexible. I can write all night or not at all. Sometimes I'll write for 20 hours straight, and then not write at all the next day.

It's definitely still stressful. Before you sell, you worry that you haven't sold, and when you do sell, you worry that you won't sell enough copies.:) Numbers are so important. Always something to worry about, but I wouldn't stop writing. I LOVE it. Plotting out a story is the most amazing thing, and watching it come to life on the page.

When you have readers quoting back things your characters said or did and saying how much they love the story and are in love with the characters, or pleading with you to hurry and finish the next book, it makes it worth all the stress. :) I just signed about a week ago with Nora Roberts and Sherrilyn Kenyon. I had a reader email me and tell me that of all the books she took home with her, she just had to read mine first, and she can't wait for the next one. Wow. She chose mine over Nora's and Sherrilyn's. That just blows me away. That's why I started writing.

Kelleigh (goodreadscomsunshine2047) Wow, most of you seem to love A Discovery of Witches, I personally just could not get into the story. I must be the only one though!

Terry (Ter05 TwiMoms/ MundieMoms) (ter05) | 292 comments I have Discovery of Witches sitting here and have not started it yet. I tried so hard to like The Bronze Horseman, but just can't get into that era and setting (Russia) and the whole story bothered me. I made it to page 207 and this nice hard cover copy is just sitting here. I am sure I will never finish it.

I read a bunch of those "clan" books a LONG time ago. I got hooked on them. There are a couple of parts that still stick with me, although I don't remember the plots.

Terry (Ter05 TwiMoms/ MundieMoms) (ter05) | 292 comments I read the first three or four a long time ago. They are different than anything else out there - about literally the cave men times. They are the story of one woman but then she does meet a man and yes, there is romance/sex. I loved them but then along about #3 or #4 I thought they were kind of not going anywhere and stopped reading them. I do know I read at least three and that is more reading than a lot of series! I'd recommend them.

I order most if not all my moms audio books from the library and sometimes I have a hard time finding books for her because she must listen to 5 or 6 books a week. I had read the Auel books long ago and was thinking she would not like them but ordered them anyways and she loved them. Kept asking me when do I get the next one. Being the good daughter that I am, 5 years ago when she came to take care of me after my knee replacement, I started her audio book obsession with the Outlander series. Of course when I would need her for something and would yell for her she would not hear me because she was so into Jamie and Clair.

message 75: by Carren (new)

Carren Kay | 953 comments I read all of the "Clan" series and the first story was pretty boring, but I hung on and finished it. The continuing stories were pretty good. It's been years since I read them. I'm not sure that I'll read the latest installment. I've forgotten so much of what happened in the earlier ones. And, of all things I mistakenly donated my Clan books to the library. Oh well, I hope whoever has them enjoys them.

message 77: by Shannon (new)

Shannon Sansom (sansomshannon60gmailcom) | 5 comments I just finished The Winter Sea by Susanna Kearsley. It is a "book within a book"; the premise is that an author is writing a book about the Jacobites of James Stuart's time (The '08 Uprising; Bonnie Prince Charlie's father). The story alternates between the fictional author's story, and the story she is writing about. There's no time travel, but it does have a little paranormal in it. I won't tell you what, because I'd have to add a spoiler alert. It's not as long or detailed as Gabaldon, nor is it in the same time period (the generation before), but still it's a pretty good read set in Scotland. It currently is being offered as a "Sunshine Deal" Kindle download for the bargain price of $2.99, well worth the price.

Terry (Ter05 TwiMoms/ MundieMoms) (ter05) | 292 comments I just checked this out and have it on my TBR list already. Sounds interesting.

AliNicole Reads (alinicolereads) I'm about 200 pages into A Discovery of Witches (All Souls Trilogy, #1) by Deborah Harkness and really enjoying it so far.

Terry (Ter05 TwiMoms/ MundieMoms) (ter05) | 292 comments I have Discovery of Witches but it is in a very deep pile. I started reading Shanna Abe's Drakon series starting with Smoke Thief and liked her writing so well I looked at her other books and discovered Intimate Enemies which is about an English Lord and the daughter of a Scottish Laird - not sure which century. About half way through and enjoying it.

Yes, I just re-read The Bronze Horseman trilogy for the fourth time. It took me about 5 days. I think I almost lost my job and husband in the process! I couldn't think of anything but Tatiana and Alexander. I just can't seem to stop when I am that enthrallled! I will check out your books Anita!

Gail | 3 comments I loved " A Game of Thrones." I just finished the third book in the series, and I am almost (but not quite) as obsessed as I am with the Outlander series. I love historical fiction, and I think Diana Gabaldon's books are the best I've read. I'm really looking forward to her next book, "The Scottish Prisoner", which is coming out in November. But in the meantime, I plan to read the next 2 in the Game of Thrones series, then "A Discovery of Witches" and "The Winter Sea."

Terry (Ter05 TwiMoms/ MundieMoms) (ter05) | 292 comments I finished A Game of Thrones a week ago and have started the second book. Have had company so have not read in it this week, but I gave A Game of Thrones five stars. It's not a romance though although not completely lacking in it. I just finished Shannon Abe's Intimate Enemies and liked it a lot - set in Scotland. Not time travel or fantasy but just a fun historical romance.

Barbara | 2 comments The Outlander series is hands down one of the best series I've ever read. I put off reading the first book for the longest time and after reading I was a dope for waiting so long to read such an amazing series.

The Into the Wilderness series falls right behind the Outlander series. I finished reading the last book in the series and had to go back to the first book because I wasn't ready to let the Bonner family go.

I would love to find another series that comes close to these two.

Leea | 1239 comments Love love Loved On a Highland Shore by Kathleen Givens I found it here in the Outlander group like over a year ago. I'm always looking for another Highlander fix.

I've heard great things about The Winter Sea by Susanna Kearsley it's on my ever growing TBR list.

Have you read The White Mare (Dalriada Trilogy, #1) by Jules Watson

Terry (Ter05 TwiMoms/ MundieMoms) (ter05) | 292 comments I have The Winter Sea sitting here to read and just ordered On A Highland Shore. I have read The White Mare and I think gave it three stars. It was okay. Try Juliet Marillier's books as she has become one of my very favorite authors and they are kind of the same era as The White Mare but MUCH better story telling. Most people (myself included) start with the first Sevenwaters book Daughter of the Forest- I bought every book she has written and then bought the hardbacks of them all to put on my "very favorite books" shelf.
