Shobana yup....itz his hobby or sumthin
sum1 dies in every book or so

Erica Sirratt 90% of his books are based on fact. A walk to remember was about his sister. The notebook was about his wife's grandparents. Dear John was about his cousin. Fact is stranger than fiction people. You can't critique real life. Just because you don't think it could have been true doesn't mean it didn't happen.

Robin That is true, Erica. Then he should make some kind of disclaimer that the story he is about to tell is based on fact. That is why we are surmising if these things did in fact occur.

A I've noticed that too! I guess that's the appeal to the readers. I myself find that I usually like books more when someone dies in it or something close. It gives it somewhat a heavier feeling than that of "happy endings".

Avital I've noticed that too and that's exactly why I hate his books.
Not only that he ruins the book by killing main characters, it's also that it looks to me as a simple and comfortable way of finishing a book.
Okay, so it's difficult to think of a satisfying end for your readers to like. So what, your solution is to come up with a tragic death and roll with it?
I honestly can't see what the fuss is about all his books.

Robin Probably it has something to do with the cycle of life, The stages of life. I never read any of his works thinking oh goodie someone is going to die at the end. I just read his books.

Shannon Same :)

Asawari ya that's true..

Michael Yes all his books are like that.

Kassy Yes

Alkmini Yeah... When I first started reading Nicholas Sparks' books I got the impression that always someone dies but then I read some books of him that no one dies (at least not one of the main characters...) and I was impressed :P But yeah... Almost in every single book of him someone dies :P

Melissa I was thinking the same thing. Still a good author, but wished for once someone would not die. His books always makes me cry. I can not read 2 of his books in a row. I need a happy book after his.

Yes :( I think the only one I've been really torn up over was the last song though.

Gradon33 Yes, they do. :( Still love him, though.

R.M. Brand This was why I loved what he did in The Choice and The Wedding. Both were as heart-warming as any of the other books, but the protagonists don't die! lol And man, The Choice had me sobbing in the middle of the night. It wasn't a pretty sight. lol

message 73: by Kae (new) - rated it 4 stars

Kae his writings' always have the same pattern. LOVE BLOOMS. SECRET REVEALS. SOMEONE IS SICK. SOMEONE DIES. although at the beginning of the story i am already bracing myself that it wasn't a happy ending but it never fails to wrench my heart each time nevertheless...and i never learned my lesson.

Nick Sparks is like the modern version of Will Shakespeare. always tragic endings.

message 74: by Soad (new) - rated it 5 stars

Soad his books are really great more realistic then others

message 75: by Lele (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lele for me it always sounds like the girl always goes through the pain like he doesn't like females. For example like the Notebook...just me?

Teresa Lmao, someone ALWAYS dies. I think it's part of his formula.

Lhyra101697 Hinaloc his books are for emotional persons. those who love a good cry... and those who want to waste tissues. haha
just like me. his books are very touching yet depressing.

Karen ahahahh I think that way too :)) for that I love Nicholas Sparks :)) I love tragedies ahahahh :D

Teresa anyone notice that most of the books take place in north carolina? i love when authors do that. makes me feel like all these people may know each other. that just might be me, though. ha.

Mercedes Therese wrote: "anyone notice that most of the books take place in north carolina? i love when authors do that. makes me feel like all these people may know each other. that just might be me, though. ha."

No its true that they always take place there, but I think all the cities are fake/made up. Can't remember correctly from ALL the books. Just too many lol.

Soad i swear if i could just pick up everything and run away it would be there !!!lol

Ikr! it gets me annoyed aometimes how the book is going to straight then BOOOM. there's his sudden death. have you read AT first sight. I was so mad when I finished it!

Yellowbergamot People do die a lot in his books, and he milks all the emotion. He's a good storyteller, and I really enjoy his books, but I almost always end up annoyed or bummed by the end.

Nicole Callahan yes, come to think of it, usually someone does die :(

Karen J Always! I gave up reading Nicholas Sparks and Luanne Rice ages ago just for that very reason.

Michaela yes but Nicholas sparks is my favorite author and his books are always good

CekMoNSter Yes, I think so too..
The last song,a walk to remember,The lucky One, Dear John, The night at Rodanthe(not sure of the exact title). I don`t remember seeing anyone dead at The notebook though..

Luce SO true

Ruthie I think that is one of the interesting perspectives about his writing style.................. good or bad IDK?

message 92: by Tiff (new) - rated it 4 stars

Tiff I haven't read all of his books but before I even start I just assume someone will die. My mom loves and owns all of his books but I just can't always get into them.

Ruthie yeah sometimes They take a little while to start getting in to them like his book True Believer, but after a while I got in to it.
Most of his books are pretty catchy and an easy enough read!

Layan Layous Yeah I noticed that !! I read the last song and a walk to remember and in both of them someone died !!! :))

message 95: by Molly (new)

Molly My family decided long ago that being a father in Nicholas Sparks' books was like being a red shirt on Star Trek: it's a sure sign that something terrible was going to happen to you, and it will probably end with you dying.

Mayang Rizky Is there any man on earth who lives in Nicholas's characters? It's hard to find someone with an absolute faithful heart like them

Ruthie I think that he try to make his books show that even some one died it still all works out .
Like in a walk to remember even though she died all her wishes came true and Landon became a christian and got to know her dad better.....

Jessica I absolutely loved the title of this thread and yes, I think you are certainly right. I don't know NS's background but I feel that he is writing about something that is universal in all our lives and perhaps something he has close experience with (after all, A Walk to Remember was dedicated to two people that I believe lived a similar life; correct me if I'm wrong). I've come to just expect when I sit down with a NS book to be heartily depressed at the end. Sometimes, you need that just as much as you need a laugh.

Noah and Allie die at the end. Together. A double whammy! haha
