Is this at all similar to Outlander? minus the time travel. I'm trying to find a book for my b/f to read and he is obsessed with Outlander since he himself is Scottish lol.

You should get him to read the into the wilderness series by Sara donati, there is some Scottish history or background mostly American and Canadian. I did love the mcclairen books but its more a romance series, in my opinion.
