Taust | 2 comments Whenever I download a book that I purchased from B and N I get this message when ever I try to do anything withit on the ADE page "Document is licensed for a different user account."

I can't move it or find it on my Nook WiFi. What am I doing wrong and how do I fix it?

It sounds like an issue with the ADE permissions. Have you ever gotten books from Sony Reader? That messed me up. Here's the advice I got, though I had to convert it for Mac:

"In Windows 7 find an epub file (in my computer ADE has its own folder and the files are in it) and right mouse click on it, then click on properties in the menu. Under the general tab it should say type of file and opens with. Click on Change program and select ADE.

For other versions of Windows, search help for Change which programs Windows uses by default and you should get instructions. "

(If you have a Mac, let me know and I'll try to re-figure out how I did it. ;-) )

Lr | 9 comments I've gone to B&N and the library. I spent 30 mintutes on tech support, I've deleted and reinstalled ADE, I've ejected and input my nook. Nothing is working. The library book comes in acsm and goes onto my computer, no problem. I've dragged and dropped it everywhere. I've put it in ADE, opens great there, opens great on my computer. I click on nook on the left side bar and it says the book is there, and I can open it through the nook, and read it on my computer. But when I open the nook, I get a blank sheet of paper icon with a red question mark and the name of the book with ascm after it. Why won't it open?? I have gone back and done this a dozen times. It is in my book library, in my documents and in my files of the nook, all the same. Won't open.

message 5: by Scott (new)

Scott | 292 comments You can't put books purchased at B&N on ADE because of the DRM on the ebooks.

message 6: by willaful, dedicated nookworm (new)

Well that explains a lot!

message 7: by Lr (new)

Lr | 9 comments Here's another question for you: I (finally) managed to get a book onto my nook from the public library collection, but then I got a box saying "unlock your book, enter the name and credit card number you used to purchase this item". BUT IT'S A LIBRARY BOOK. I didn't purchase anything, and I don't know where my credit card number is going. No one at B&N store has seen this (really, am I making this up, or am I just magically falling into these issues?) and tech support only could say it was "probably" because of the DRM on the book, but they didnt' know who wanted the credit card number.
I haven't tried downloading books from B&N because I have to pay for them, and I wanted to check this out for free first, to see what I thought about it. I'm sure it will be effortless to buy a book with this. Seriously, for all the hassle, maybe good old fashioned paper books are the way to go.

message 8: by willaful, dedicated nookworm (new)

That is pretty weird. I think Fictionwise uses that unlocking system, though it seems unlikely the library bought the book from them.

Here's a thought - try downloading a free book from B&N to see how that works for you. Here's a link to currently available freebies: http://www.barnesandnoble.com/u/Free-...

You could also try downloading another library book and see if you have the same problem. Perhaps the library screwed up something on that particular book's processing. You could also contact the library and let them know. It sounds to me like something wrong on the sending end, though I could be wrong.

message 9: by Lr (new)

Lr | 9 comments Thanks, I stopped into the library and they had no idea. I have to wait until Monday to call the Central library for more information. I downloaded 2 books from the library and got the same message. I don't know how I get these unique problems..... I'm heading back to B&N later, maybe someone will have info. I'm finding that those people don't know everyting there is to know about nook.

You can't sideload a library book. That is why it is asking for the name and credit card. You need to import library books to your Nook from ADE.

message 11: by Lr (new)

Lr | 9 comments Can you explain how to do this? I put the book in the ADE folder (and then it finally went to epub instead of ascm) and then dragged it to my nook on the left side of the screen from there. Maybe this is not the correct way. I am not the best at this stuff, but trying hard to learn.

message 12: by Scott (last edited Apr 12, 2011 02:25PM) (new)

Scott | 292 comments Save the ascm file onto your computer. Then right click the file and Open With... then Adobe Digital Editions. This will put the file in ADE. Then connect your Nook to the PC. You should then see your Nook on the left side of ADE. Click All Items on the left. Then find your book on the right side of the screen and drag and drop it into your Nook. That should do it.

When you are done, you can delete the ascm file.

Oh! I thought the acsm files held the license to read the book and we had to keep them! They've been driving me crazy cluttering up my downloads folder. Thanks for the info!

message 14: by Lr (new)

Lr | 9 comments I downloaded the book and put it in ADE(actually 2 of them, just to test it) and FINALLY got it in epub (no longer acsm), somehow (I'm not even sure - I tried so many ways) but this "unlock the book, give us your credit card number" has me baffled. B&N store, and tech support, as well as the Central Library can't figure it out (the central library wants to take my nook and trouble shoot it). What is this 'unique' problem that somehow only I stumbled onto? I even went back today (past the 7 day borrowing time) and it's still there. I don't know how to delete these from the nook. Do I have to hook it up to the computer? Why is it asking for a credit card to let me read a library book? Has ANYONE run into this??

Have you gone into "item details and options" in "My Documents" and tried to delete it there? You need to be on the book selection page, pointing at the book you want to delete. If that doesn't work, hook it up to the computer and remove it manually.

I have pretty much the same thing happen to me except I get a message stating I am not an authorized user. I have called Barnes and Noble and they couldn't help me so the referred me to Adobe and they couldn't figure out what the problem is.
The big selling point for me was I would be able to check out library books but I still can't and it has become very frustrating. I have been able to side load books that are not DRM. I wish somebody would come up with the solution.

Bob, I suggest trying the Nook forums at B&N. Lots of answers there.

message 18: by Lr (new)

Lr | 9 comments Yes, I TOTALLY agree, I wanted to be able to download library books as well. I am just happy that someone has the same problem. Everyone I talked to at B&N and Adobe, and the Tech people and the Library all made me feel like this had NEVER happened before. Maybe if enough people speak up, a solution will be found. Thanks Bob, you've made my day.

A lot of times the libraries know a lot about using e-book readers. They might be able to answer your questions from helping other library customers

message 20: by Chara (new)

Chara (charalee) I have my ADE registered using the same email address as my bn.com account. I'm not sure if that would cause any problems. I've never had any problems using ADE with purchased, free, or library books.

message 21: by Lr (new)

Lr | 9 comments I use the same email address for everything, and it didn't help. The regular librarian and the librarian at the central library (where they set up the ebooks) also couldn't help. I am glad that some people have no problems doing this, it gives me hope that maybe someday it will work for me too. Right now I cannot devote the amount of hours to fix it, so I am just working with the free ebooks through B&N and any that I have purchased. Still waiting for my updates too.

I am still having problems with library books and nobody has been able to help I am extremely frustrated with the problem. I searched the forums for answers but I found no solutions.

I am beginning to thing it is a problem with my computer. I am using a MAC with Adobe digital editions. I even tried to use calibre and I had the same problem. I hope to have the problem solved as quickly as possible.

Bob, this fixed the problem I was having, might be worth a try:

"To change the file association on a mac computer, right click (or control-click on a 1-button mouse) on a particular file you want to "switch" (in this case, acsm or epub), and select the "Get Info" option.

This should open up an information panel for that file. In that info panel, you should be able to change the default program for that file (back to Adobe Reader), and then check a box that tells the mac to do this for all files with this extension.

Then you're done."

I have tried that, but I still have the same problem. I now get two messages. In Adobe digital editions I get a message that the book is liscensed to another user. And when I try to open it I get a message user not authorized.

message 25: by Nita (last edited May 13, 2011 12:54PM) (new)

Nita (gillnit) The public library I work at just started using Overdrive. The first time I tried copying an eBook from ADE to my Nook I received the "user not authorized" message when trying to open the book in my Nook. I called B&N and they thought it was a DRM problem. And the Overdrive people had no idea. I finally figured out on my own how to fix it and wrote up instructions in case any of the patrons here had the same problem. Here is what I wrote up:

If you get the message “User Not Activated” when trying to open a book you have moved from Adobe Digital Editions to your Nook, it means Adobe Digital Editions has not authorized your nook.
This happens sometimes even when you had authorized it the first time you plugged in your Nook with Adobe Digital Editions. It seems to happen when you download the Adobe Digital Editions software before creating an Adobe ID.
To fix:
Plug your Nook into your computer
Open your Nook folder on the computer to view files
Delete the folder .adobe-digital-editions
Unplug your Nook from the computer
Open Adobe Digital Editions
Plug your Nook into the computer
You should get a pop up to authorize your nook again
Recopy the book to the Nook

It worked for me after I re-authorized my Nook.

I have tried that also and I still get user not authorized. I am at the end of my wits trying to solve the problem. I uninstalled Adobe Digital Editions and reinstalled it and reauthorized my computer and then reauthorized my Nook but nothing seemed to work.

message 27: by Lr (new)

Lr | 9 comments Did anyone else get asked for the credit card number that you "bought your book with" from the public library site? It says it needs it to "unlock the book". And I don't have a Mac, I have a PC and have all these problems. I'm going to try the instructions above and see if I can get the ADE started again correctly. I haven't tried it in a while. My husband is getting frustrated, because I don't use the nook he gave me for my birthday - it's a hassle to straighten out all these issues!

ADE is sometimes slow for me too, and I regularly have to quit it and restart because it gets stuck. I also sometimes get that "not autherized" message, but haven't yet had a problem opening any book. (Knock wood.) ADE is just very buggy and it incenses me that they have such a monopoly.

I finally got it to work. I had to unregister my Nook and then Register it. Then I reauthorized it in Adobe Digital Editions and it worked. I didn't think I was ever going to get it solve.

Lr | 9 comments Unregister the nook where? From the library, or ADE? Or do you mean unregister from B&N?

message 33: by Diane (new)

Diane (dcl55) | 29 comments I have also had the frustration about being able to open the ADE books from my library on my Pandigital Novel, which has NOOK/B&N incorporated with the Android OS.
I have tried so many different options and configurations...then YAY...opened a library book and the format was really odd. So, back to ADE on iPhone and other books on the Nook/Pandigital Novel.

Diane (dcl55) | 29 comments Also wanted to add, I am very impressed with the color resolution on the Nook Color. SO, do not hesitate to add books with lots of color, childrens books, and my fav - art books! Love the Nook Color!!

I have the same problem Willaful... I can load the elibrary book on my nook using ADE but it says i'm not authorized user. I have taken ADE off my nook (per instructions on ADE) and then tried to add my nook again but my Mac is to smart - it wont let me get rid of it. I can load a book from ADE website and read it but I cannot load and read the books from the Library or netgalley. Any ideas? I have so many free book that I could be reading and i'm getting really frustrated.

If you can load them from ADE but not onto your ereader, I would guess that they're not registered in the same way. They need to be identical.

Here's a thread that might help: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/626420

Can you describe the nature of the problem? What happens when you try to load the book?

message 37: by Vera (new)

Vera (verareads) | 2 comments I had numerous problems getting books onto ADE from our library. I exchanged emails and calls with the library, and they contacted Adobe, who sent a list of suggestions that the library had already suggested and I had tried with no success. I had decided I was not going to be able to get digital books from the library. However, later when I used Turbotax to do my taxes, I had to get on their help site to file my return electronically, and in going through their help suggestions I had to get on my windows settings and found some small changes recommended. After my income tax return was sent I just tried the ADE again, and it worked. So it couldn't hurt to go through your settings to see if anything looks wrong. I don't know which setting was the one causing the problems, but I do know that the changes were all to things I had no idea were set as they were, that is, they looked funny to me even without a great deal of computer knowledge.

When I open the book on my nook to read it says "not an authorized user" (or something like that). I took ADE off my Nook and followed the instructions to reinstall my nook but it does not work. I cannot get ADE to acknowledge that it's a new Nook. Plus. I'm new to the Mac scene, but I don't think i'm doing it wrong. Thanks for the link I will check it out. So far i'm not impressed with ADE, I have Calibre and i've never had an issue.

Has anyone ever called ADE and gotten help?

The only time I had that problem was when the book was expired from the library other than that I had no other issues.

message 41: by Leea (new)

Leea I think my issue is re-registering my nook on ADE. Problem is my computer is not seeing the nook as a new device and i've followed the instructions.

Willaful - I think ADE sucks big time. Glad i'm not offending you :) It's been nothing but trouble from the start. ugh. I would love to get ebooks from my library but this is just madness.

Here's a new ADE trick I just learned about:

To add a book you own to your ADE library, go to the library view. (The icon with several books.) Open the "library" menu and click "Add item to library." The find the item in your documents folder, or wherever else it is. (If it's a Sony book, for example, it'll be in documents/My Books/Reader library.)

Possibly everyone else in the world but me already knew this, but I'm glad to know about it!
