Caitlin I enjoyed it, why do you say no one likes it?

It was the lack of romance. You know, all those youth readers expecting him to somehow run into a fellow survivor of a different accident in the forests, who'd be a girl. People just expect certain elements in stories, and when they aren't there, then they're quickly demoted in the readers eyes. Go figure.

Rachel (aka. Kaiserin Sisi) As a person who didn't like it: it's just not my type of book. I very rarely like realistic fiction books. I'm much more of a sci-fi/fantasy girl. For me, at least, it's got nothing to do with the presence or lack of romance. It's just not the type of story that interests me.

Also, when I read the book (sometime in late elementary school), I was really sensitive, and this book really freaked me out. I'm like those people who hate clowns because they had a scary experience when they were little.

Hylian Princess I liked this book :)

Wait a minute... what happened to you in elementary school to make you freak out when reading hatchet?

 l ι l y I lOVED THIS BOOK.

Iris I'm sorry but I just hated this book. -.- It wasnt my kind.

Bethany I liked this book. But I know a few people who didn't like the book, mainly because it was a school book.

Stephanie (Reading is Better With Cupcakes) I remember enjoying this book when I read it way back in elementary school.

message 10: by Lisa (new) - rated it 4 stars

Lisa I liked reading this book when I was young because it was exciting to imagine being alone and having to take care of oneself. I liked the thought process of the Brian (I think his name was). I'd recommend it for my children to read.

message 11: by Jen (new) - rated it 4 stars

Jen My son and I both read this together, and both of us liked it. It is a good book, and I think that my son was probably just fascinated by the fact that Brian was able to survive on his own in the middle of nowhere.

Robin You survive any way you know how. That is what he had. So he used it. I read it since my daughter brought it home, and read it. Compelling book. Not usually my genre of book, but good nontheless.

Blondie101 Ther is nothing wrong with the book! It was spectacular.

Robin It was a good book. I just meant to say that I just read it to see what my daughter was reading. I think she read it in 6th grade.

Robin She is now in the 8th grade, so it has been awhile. The years blend into others when you get to be my age. Who knows, and who cares.

message 16: by Amy (new) - added it

Amy I loved this book! Nothing is wrong with it.

Kate It was a good book, but for my personal opion it was neither here nor there. I think some people don't like because it's hard to believe that someone with no survival experiance could survive
a) a plane crash
b) drinking unpurified water for so long
c) only having a hatchet...to do EVERYTHING.

Not gonna lie, most people would die in that situation.

Faith It was just too boring. Not that it was about survival, because I like things like the Hunger Games, but it was how the author wrote it.

Emily D I found the book to be slow, and I had to read it for a class which seems to always dock points from a book for me.

Robin I read it since my daughter was reading it for school. Read it quickly in one day. It was a good book. I won't read the Into Thin Air by Krakauer though.

message 21: by Nick (new) - rated it 4 stars

Nick I loved it and spent the next year fantasizing about crash landing and living off the land. I also loved Robinson Crusoe...go figure.

Bailey We need some positives!! :)

Not true . . . I'm a reading teacher and my 5th graders just finished reading Hatchet. The boys absolutely love it and now all want to read Paulsen's other books.

ronan☪☃☔☀☠✈♱ THAT BOOK WAS AWESOME

message 25: by Anna (new) - rated it 5 stars

Anna It didn't lack romance. I just couldn't picture a girl in the story at all, why would she be in there?? For the lack of romance, adventure fills in all the gaps. I personally don't like survival stories but this story is so true and realistic that I can't help but like it.

Logan this is a great book, what do you mean some people do not like it

Mattie I did not like this book at all... I thought the author repeated the same thing over and over and really... he still is thinking about the fact his parents divorced when he is stuck in the wilderness trying to survive!!!!
sorry if I'm dissing this book I just did not like it sorry!!!!

Mattie what??

message 29: by Graciela (new)

Graciela Marez I haven't read this book in a really long time... (i forgot what it was about) It wasn't memorable, but I do remember I liked it.

message 30: by Graciela (new)

Graciela Marez Can someone recap the book for me? Put the little spoiler thing around it for everyone else... Please :)

Olivia I liked the book, but my sis didn't.

message 32: by Soad (new) - rated it 4 stars

Soad I LOVED ALL THREE BOOKS THEY ARE ABOUT GROWING INTO URSELF AND LOVING IT PLUS THE SOLITARY THING IS SO COOL I REALLY LIKED THAT PART OF THE BOOK I WISH I CAN DO WHAT HE DID IN THE THIRD BOOK THAT EXPERIENCE WOULD HAVE BEEN REALLY NICE.

Mattie I was not a big fan because I thought the plot was set on the fact that his parents divorced I thought the story would have been better if he had looked past that and really focaced on servival but thats what I thought otherwise the book was not that... bad.

message 34: by Logan (new) - rated it 1 star

Logan I think it is a negative story because why would anyone want 2 read a book about a 13 year old boy that's trapped in a plane with a dead pilot!

Graciela Marez Logan wrote: "I think it is a negative story because why would anyone want 2 read a book about a 13 year old boy that's trapped in a plane with a dead pilot!"

Now I remember! Yeah. The title rang a bell, but I just couldn't grasp the plot. Yeah. I thought it was OK. Well, the question isn't "why read this?" It's "why not?" It is negative and some people (like me) prefer books like that.

message 36: by Graciela (new)

Graciela Marez If you didn't like it, you didn't like it. Everybody is entitled to their opinion. :)

It's the same reason you let a kid read Red Badge of Courage or Old Yeller. The book was awesome as a kid, watching someone struggle and survive. It was very riveting. Besides if a dead pilot bothers you then you should never read the bible XD

message 39: by Shay (new) - rated it 5 stars

Shay I LOVED this book! I read it so many times!! I didn't care if it had love story or not (and trust me, I love a love story). I would definitely read this book again.

However, I was not all that crazy about the sequels. I tried to read them a couple times, but I only got through "The River" or something like that, and that's only because I had to do a book report or some kind of project on it.

Daniel I read this book when I was in middle school and loved it. This is my kind of book and I have read it several times. Even as an adult I have picked it up for a quick and easy read. I grew up camping and learning about surviving in the wilderness. It is a simple book but reminds me of what is important.

Laura I really liked this book when I read it in school. So did my husband.

Jenna W AWESOME book !!!!!!!!!!

Lauren Reasons:
1. It was assigned to me for school.
2. There's pretty much only one character, and he's really not that interesting. There isn't much interaction. There are no relationships.
3. Bryan (Brian?)does a lot of stupid things. I would often find myself yelling at this book.
4. It's just... not interesting.

Juliana well every one has ther own opinion but i really liked it

Sharon I loved this book, I listened Peter Coyote read it, wonderful.

Sharon Did you read the book, all of it?

Caitlin Silva It may not be the perfectly reasoned out book, but you have to admit that you wondered what was going to happen next and you imagined yourself at some time being in that same situation
