Excellent mission. Dogs are awesome."

James Herriot is great. I went through a period of reading all his books.

~Geektastic~ (atroskity) | 3205 comments Someone just recently turned in a giant stack of Penguin paperbacks of all of PG Wodehouse's works at the local used book store. I really wanted to buy the whole set, but I settled for 6 as they were $2 each.

Jeeves in the Morning
Right Ho, Jeeves
The Code of the Woosters
Jeeves and the Feudal Spirit
Jeeves in the Offing
Stiff Upper Lip, Jeeves

janine | 7709 comments My thrift store recently had all of Agatha Christie's collected works. I like to try to figure out which books come from the same home.

Alias Reader (aliasreader) I went to my local indie book store to buy the just out in paperback version of
Malcolm X~Manning Marable
Unfortunately they didn't have it in stock and and I would have to order it. I figured if I had to do that I might as well go with Amazon.

So instead I purchased,
Oogy The Dog Only a Family Could Love by Larry Levin Oogy: The Dog Only a Family Could Love~~Larry Levin

You read the entire trilogy in one night? I'm impressed.

message 161: by Jane (new)

Jane (shoxford) | 39 comments Yeah, I'm a fast reader. I read the first two books and half of the third on Sunday night (in about 4 hours) and then finished the third on my lunch break yesterday (1 hour).

Onto the next one now... Birthdays for the Dead Started last night, at page 299 today, anticipating finishing later.

It gets expensive being a speed reader...

message 162: by Jane (new)

Jane (shoxford) | 39 comments Oh and I was out last night for 2 hours as well.

Angela~twistedmind~ (twistedmind) | 538 comments I guess it's a rare talent to be able to rocket through books but I like to take my time, savor them, retain what I've read. It's not the quantity that is important to me, but the joy of sauntering through the pages and loving (or hating) the characters by the time we say good-bye.
But, to each his own. And it is impressive. I certainly could never accomplish it.

message 177: by Phil (new)

Phil | 11837 comments I bought Anansi Boys.

I also took a good look through the detective/mystery shelves, but found nothing that clicked with me. I considered the Parker novels that don't have Spenser in them, but some reviews scared me off. I also looked at P.D. James but, again, wasn't swept up by the snippets I read.

I've had enough Victorian and early 20th century investigations. Let's move on to at least 1980, people. Sheesh.

I like the Inspector Lynley books as well, Phil, and you won't miss anything by starting with the second book.

message 184: by Lobstergirl, el principe (new)

Lobstergirl | 24786 comments Mod
Agreed, it won't hurt to start with the second or third book, then go back and read the first if you like 2 and 3. I've read them out of order myself, but I had watched the TV series first so I knew a lot of the background. There are chronological things happening in the relationships between the two main detectives, and Inspector Lynley's romantic relationships, but it's not the end of the world if you find out some spoilery relationship stuff.

message 185: by Phil (new)

Phil | 11837 comments Just bought a few new (to me) books at B&N.

The Redbreast -- Jo Nesbo
A Tree Grows In Brooklyn -- Betty Smith
Furies of Calderon -- Jim Butcher
Payment in Blood -- Elizabeth George

Now I need to find time to read.
