Thoughts?..thanks, Nancy

Both are excellent, Nancy, but I think The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks is more discussion-worthy.

Although I personally preferred Henrietta Lachs,
Unbroken spurred much more conversation. Your group
can't go wrong either way!

@Kbrown I just read Kings of the Earth and House Arrest: A Novel and they were both excellent.

Oh, Shona, that makes me so happy!
I think we might do this again sometime, but open to all BOTNS readers and listeners. What do you think?

I think it's a great idea! While I was going through the book I had thought it would be neat if all the listeners recommended their favorites.. then I wondered how big that book would have to be! Move over War & Peace...

That would be great -- maybe a holiday gift guide?

Maybe you could get IndieBound to put in a sponsorship ad...

Sounds like a wonderful idea...I bought a few extra for Christmas gifts, and the larger BOTNS one would be in MY stocking!

Joann- I love the idea of these as stocking stuffers! I wonder if I can get one in time for Easter, it would be great for my mom's basket!

Both of them are fantastic, but for book group--at least one like ours with lots of busy women- I think I would lean towards Henrietta Lacks. It's extremely readable, brings up fascinating scientific, social, and moral questions to discuss that are not necessarily clearcut, and is not that long. A perfect combination.

An intriguing and fascinating book on how countries vie against each other to be top dog on the world stage. Spies, double agents, love triangles -- it’s all in a day’s work! In today’s interconnected world, this book gives one an interesting perspective on how much competition goes on behind the scenes with ambitions and stakes running high. Hearts are broken and for some power is gained.
Illuminating book on the espionage sphere. Lots of mind games involved! Great book with high drama and something for everyone to enjoy!

We asked the authors and guests (many of them active participants in this group!) of the first ever Books on the Nightstand Weekend Retreat to recommend two books they can't wait for us to read -- new, old, in print or out of print, it didn't matter.
Michael used his graphic design skills to create an amazing book that will be printed on demand on the Espresso Book Machine at The Northshire Bookstore.
I spent about 1/2 an hour with the book when the proof copy came off press, and another 1/2 hour last night. It's simply wonderful! On almost every page was a book that I added to my reading list.
Each participant has a full page for their two recommendations and the reason why they love the book. The authors include Chris Bohjalian, Jon Clinch, Wendy Clinch, Matthew Dicks, Susan Gregg Gilmore, Elizabeth Stuckey-French, Steve Himmer, Ellen Meeropol, and John Milliken Thompson.
You can order the book for $12 plus shipping here:
http://www.northshire.com/siteinfo/bo...
(Michael and I do get a small part of the purchase price which will offset costs for the retreat and blog/podcast hosting).
It's my hope that this is so successful that we can do this again in the future, and that all of you will participate as well.
Thanks.
