Wilhelmina Jenkins | 2049 comments I know that there are a number of group members who, like me, are fans of the great Edward P. Jones, author of The Known World, Lost in the City, and All Aunt Hagar's Children: Stories. You may enjoy this essay in which he talks about being "doomed" to write.

Denise | 18 comments Thanks for the link, Wilhelmina. I'm leaving on a trip tomorrow and am bringing THE KNOWN WORLD with me. I will keep the question he started with in mind.

I've been thinking about artistic compulsion lately, and am kind of relieved that I don't suffer from it. I hope that those that do, and don't receive the rewards of fame and finance, find reward in the creation itself.

I remember reading another article about Mr. Jones (probably posted here), and thinking that he seemed so likeable. I've got a copy of ALL AUNT HAGAR'S CHILDREN waiting on my shelf.

This article is very timely for me. I too feel that I'm doomed to write, even though it will likely not ..."

Many artists say that, Christine; that you can't help yourselves, the work calls out to be created. They recommend your approach, too- more perspiration than inspiration.

Best Wishes with it.
