Lindsey (booksdingle) | 186 comments Aw thanks very much, today in 'training' I did a stocktake in the gift shop/library while staff were elsewhere so had whole place to myself - was great! Lots of lovely things to look at and great books - the place is gorgeous is a C17th stately home, 90 acres of gardens/lakes etc - I have been there before and enjoyed the grounds but never been in the house itself and now my staff room is in there, its very grand/old/spooky(!) and like a maze trying to find way around they use walkie talkies! I shall have to get myself on one of the guided tours. If anyone is interested google Tredegar House, Newport. Thanks for all the good wishes, I appreciate the kind thoughts!

Lindsey (booksdingle) | 186 comments I got a guided tour yesterday that was nice BUT already having some issues regarding the job itself....as usual the weight of the job is far more than was at first made clear (1 person expected to do job of 4 type of scenario) and as I am in position at moment where I want neither responsibility or stress I am not filled with joy that the 'assistant' job is more like a supervisory/lone worker job - lots to look after which is throwing up lots of issues I didn't think I would be dealing with at this stage - got a dilemma now as feel like was mis-sold this job and really don't want 6 months of major pressure... Not being paid enough!

What a shame, you seemed so excited to get back to work. Is there a written job spec you can refer to, and if so, were you given it before you applied for/accepted the job? Is there any chance you can re-negotiate terms and reach a compromise (I know it’s easier said than done)?

message 13: by Lindsey (new)

Lindsey (booksdingle) | 186 comments There are a few other issues as well but I will be speaking to my line manager about them Wednesday when I am in for first official shift so may become more clear then....I am hoping there is a compromise as I really want this job - at moment I am just a bit miffed that its alot more than I was led to believe - I may have jumped to some conclusions as it was advertised as 'assistant' I thought it was assisting a supervisor rather than running the show - I have had jobs in past where I supervised but didn't want that in this job and disappointed that is appears to be that way, I am at point where I want an unpressurised job that will tide me over, with house and kids to look after don't want pressure in work, been there and got the tshirt, but maybe its just expected everywhere these days? As you say is a shame as I was really excited about this and I still do want to work there. I am not great with stress either - what do you do for a living? how do you cope with stress?!

sorry to hear about it but seems more thesedays with jobs that you get more than what you signed up for but sadly during recessions firms do take extra liberties but sadly its modern life

Do hope that you can manage to clear things up with the job. I think, as Steve says, that these days, employers will try to wring as much out of you as they can.

I completely understand with the not wanting stress at work when you have a house and family to take of. I've worked in the electronics/defence industry for what feels like a hundred years, mostly in customer service/contract management, then five or six years ago, I decided to stop managing people and stop commuting a ridiculous journey to work. I now work for the MD of one of my old customers, travel a maximum of an hour on a bad day and I'm home by 5 oclock. It's still a senior job, but I only manage myself. The downside is, all the skills I aquired are going rusty and I earn less that two thirds of my previous salary! Sometimes you have to do what's right for you.

I guess the answer to your question is, I learnt what was a reasonable stress level for me, stopped trying to be superwoman and accepted the consequenses. Steve is right to be realistic and not give you false hope about getting what you want, BUT I'll be positive and keep my fingers crossed for Wednesday

yes they do, and in general I am not worried about taking on extra duties or of working hard - but I don't agree with a job advertised as an 'assistant' being more of a running the show job - think thats stretching things a bit far. Nevermind though will see how it goes, hopefully I will rise to the challenge!!! lol.

Lindsey (booksdingle) | 186 comments Happy to report it is getting better, issues sorted and getting to grips with it all - still pinching myself to be lucky enough to work in such a beautiful place, grounds and manor house are gorgeous, people are great and today we had wall to wall sunshine so droves of visitors all happy to be enjoying a day in the sunshine - happy people all round! We got our filthy city scratch and sniff cards too, which tie in with the tv prog on at the mo, and i can confirm they do indeed stink!!! Hoping to get camera out sometime soon and take some nice pics if I can fit that into my lunch break

Angela (bookangel2) | 163 comments So pleased to hear that things are being sorted and that you're happy with the job now. It sounds lovely - if you take some photos, will you put them on your profile? I like looking at photos! :0)

Lindsey (booksdingle) | 186 comments I took a camera to work today and took a few snaps before I started but my camera or my camera skills not much cop so they are not especially great - I will try harder next week and get some on yes - thanks

I have added a few on my profile but more to come when I get my picture taking skills up to scratch, they don't really do it justice but something to go on with!
