Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 752 comments I'm kind of missing the days before I found online reading groups/sites. Where I just picked up a book because I wanted to read it and not to fit it into some sort of challenge. Or because I offered it in a game on PBS. Or because it's WL on a trading site and I need poitns.

Of course the simplest thing would be to stop joining challenges and PBS games. But I don't seem to do that. Well I do manage to stop doing games when I feel burned out. Sometimes for 3 or 4 months at a time.

I enjoy coming on to discuss the challenges and the comaraderie. But then I find myself reading for the challenge even though it's not like required that I complete them.

I think I need a break from any challenges that are restrictive as far a genre, book thems, titles etc.., Just do ones that are basically "read x books in x amount of time" or read "x books you've owned longer than a year in x time".

Mary, I know exactly what you mean! Before I joined good reads, I was reading what seemed like a book a day. Then when I joined goodreads and a few groups, and doing the challenges, it was great. Challenges can be really fun, and I love seeing and discussing what everyone else is reading. But like you, I just get burned out on them sometimes, and when I do, I'll keep signing up for them, and I either change my entire list of challenge books by the end of the month, or won't finish the challenge at all. I think taking a break from the challenges and games, and just getting back to reading whatever you're in the mood for is a great idea; when they start feeling restrictive, it takese the fun out of reading, and we can't have that, LOL!!!

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 20787 comments Ditto!! On all of your points. I'm also starting to get confused as to which challenge I signed up for. I knew I was going to spell F.L.O.W.E.R.S., but where the hell was it? In which group? I speant, like, an hour looking for it. Then I realized I could put S.P.R.I.N.G. in front of it with a little work. So, I put my books in. Oopps. Forgot to put the stars afterwards. So, I hyperlink to the book to see if I gave it 4 or 5 stars and LOST ALL MY DATA and had to start over. Luckily I had some done typing in my Word file. All this makes it work and not fun. I love GoodReads, but long for the days when I could just pick up a book and read it!

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 752 comments Well today I picked up an old historical romance. Well not really old 2005-but "old" since I've owned it for years and have mostly been reading newew releases lately. It's just a simple historical romance. No vampires, no shifters, there's no mail by date attatched to it, it's not WL on PBS(haven't checked bookmooch). I am really enjoying it too. I can probably work it into a couple challenges if I look them all up.

And it's not really part of a series. Which is another thing I'm getting burnt out on. It seems every book I pick up is part of a series that needs to be read in order. This one is connected to other books but I don't know which order it falls into the mix and I don't care. Gilding the Lady (Sinclair Family Saga) by Nicole Byrd

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 20787 comments Mary, I love Nicole Byrd's books. They are written by a mother/daughter team. My favorites are: Enticing the Earl by Nicole Byrd Widow in Scarlet (Berkley Sensation) by Nicole Byrd . I don't know how many times I have re-read them. WIS was not rated that high, but I just loved it! However, the most popular with the public is Dear Impostor (Sinclair Family Saga) by Nicole Byrd .

Ooopps! I guess I'm doing that GoodReads thing again. Hard to resist when one of my favorite authors is posted.

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 752 comments I just requested Widow in Scarlet from bookmooch.I have a few others in my TBR already. I love the sparkly pink cover of GTL. My library has a few others. I put Dear Imposter on my WL on paperbackswap.

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 20787 comments Mary, I'm checking out bookmooch.com right now. Interesting. I just tried GR bookswap, but a lot of the books I want aren't available. I mailed my first book to someone the other day. It was pretty easy. I was surprised. Does bookmooch work the same way (i.e. you print a label and put it in your mailbox for the postman)?

message 8: by Mary X (last edited Mar 27, 2011 05:18PM) (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 752 comments I don't know how goodreads swap works so I can't say. Paperbackswap.com is much, much better than bookmooch. I get a lot more books on PBS then on bookmooch. But PBS has stricter rules to follow and book posting guidelines. So I do them both. I get more wish list books on PBS but on bookmooch you can post damaged books. PBS is US only and Bookmooch is international.

I too sometimes get burned out of challenges or even sticking to one genre. Right now I'm in a romance burn out and just picked up and started reading Water for Elephants (fiction) out of the blue and I'm really enjoying it. I think it's going to help me feel more "reading refreshed"! (Hopefully!)

I definitely think that switching up the genre helps. Sometimes, I'm so worn out on the PNR alpha males, or the virgin historical romance heroine, that I could just scream! So, that's when I switch it up a bit.

Megan | 1285 comments You're right Michelle. And so far I'm feeling really good about what I'm reading- I'd have to say that so far it's working!! :o)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 20787 comments I know! I 'should' be reading my book for M for M.A.R.C.H., but Bekah posted her review of Dreaming of You (Gamblers, #2) by Lisa Kleypas ...and now I want to read that! I think I may.

Read it! Read it! I want to read that one too, so I'd like to know what you think about it :)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 20787 comments Oh my! You haven't read it yet?!!! This will be a re-read for me, but I remember it was really good. It's been years, and my tastes change. However, it is Lisa Kleypas.

Kristi (kristicasey) I am so with you ladies on the burnout! My problem is that I'm reading so much of everything else I just don't seem to have time for romance anymore. At home or in the books. HA!

I took a break from all for April. Though the genres are still mixed I'm getting romance, comedy, action, etc. But the point of my rambling is I'm finally getting a little romance back! I say stand firm with yourselves ladies and take back the joy of reading! :P

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 752 comments I have sort of stopped paying attention to my challenges and it's been kind of a relief. The only one I'm really making sure I do is a team challenge because I don't want to let my team down.

But for the past month or so I've just been reading what I want. I spent some time today and worked several of hte books I read into challenges after the fact. I also haven't joined anymore for awhile. The last 1 I joined was just a TBR clean up challenge with no specific slots to fill. I just set a challenge of reading 13 books that I've owned more than 6 months. That's just 1 a week to average for the duration and that's what I wanted to focus on this year anyway.

message 18: by Lisa Kay, Moderator (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 20787 comments Mary, Where are you doing a team challenge and how does it work? What does "hte" mean?

I've just found out I spent a ton of money trying to plug holes in series for a Spring Cleaning challenge. Oh dear!

message 19: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 752 comments hte is just me making a typo.

I'm doing a Team Challenge in the Serious Overload of Series (S.O.S.) group. It's a paranormal/urban fantasy group on goodreads. Participants were put into teams and each team has a Bingo Card filled with names of popular goodreads shelves that fit the groups theme. Everyone in the group has to read a book from that shelf and write a review on goodreads in order to get the stamp for that space on their card. First team that gets Bingo wins. There's no prize other than bragging rights. Each week a new shelf is called. This week it's Urban Fantasy. Last week was Demons and the week before was YA-Fantasy.

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 20787 comments Man-oh-man! What is with paperbackswap.com ??? That site is great. I've had books on my wishlist here at GoodReads for a couple months and I sent one book and received one book. I went to paperbackswap.com today and in two hours I got notices I would get two books (yipee) and I've had to wrap and mail three! Wow!
