Nathan To follow up on the 2011 Spring Quaterly, I am challenging all YA enthusiasts to shave the hairy legs off their to-read list.
Commencing June 01st and running for 2 months, to August 01st, all participants will try to shave 10% of the books from their to-read list, moving most, if not all of the offcuts to your read list, maybe even a few into your trash can.

Now this will be a big challenge for those with big lists, and vice versa. But it is not as hard as it sounds :)

You might find that after finishing the first few books in a series, you have not enjoyed it so far, and remove the whole series from your list.

To add a bit of spice, not only will you be challenged to read those few extra books, but those books will have to meet these guidelines:

1)All books should be Young Adult. Let's just hope you have enough YA books on your shelf.

2) Read 2 full series. (Trashing a series half-way through is acceptable)

3) Read a book from a genre you do not often dwell upon.

4) Read a book from a best-selling author.

Should a proportion of the participants find this too easy, they may find that a brand-new challenge will be released to follow up the follow-up.

Happy reading everyone!

Karis Jacobstein (yalitwit) | 15 comments Oh hell! This should be interesting... I have 203 on my TRL, but at least a third aren't out yet.

Question. If we add to out TRL, do we have to add to our challenge list?

Deborah Wow...Do we absolutely have to start in June??? Fortunately in the category of finishing a series in my to-read list one series consists of two books, unfortunately they're each about 500 pages....

Anyhow, like Karis I have over 200 books, over 80 are YA. Twenty books for me as well.

message 6: by Nathan (new)

Nathan Question. If we add to out TRL, do we have to add to our challenge list?

That is up to you :) It would really depend on how much time you had to read...

Nathan Deborah wrote: "Wow...Do we absolutely have to start in June??? Fortunately in the category of finishing a series in my to-read list one series consists of two books, unfortunately they're each about 500 pages......."

You can start as early as you like :) Right now, though, the challenge will be officially starting in June, though 5 weeks is a very short space of time to read 20 books. If anyone requests it, I'll extend the challenge to start 1 or 2 weeks earlier, or to finish 1-2 weeks later.

message 8: by Bethany (last edited May 16, 2011 07:18AM) (new)

Bethany (b_shively) okay...I've been working on my TBR list...step 1 go back and review books and remove those that I'm not really interested in....this took forever...lol...I started out with 425 books on my list and I've gotten it down to 366....and then step 2 was to find books on my list that are available at my local library...so far I've got a list of 24...that's a pretty good start since I've gotta read like 36 1/2 books!! lol....now I just have to make sure my books meet the challenge requirements...lol...this should be fun....but I'll probably need to get started...36 books is a lot!!

Okay...so I think I'm making some progress and with this but then I keep adding more to read!! It's a never ending cycle!! lol....but I've got it down to 320....so 32 books....that's do able...right?!?

I've got my TBR list down to 225 books! That gets my challenge down to 22 1/2 books!! At this rate I'll have my list shaved before June!! lol

message 9: by D (new)

D Oh good Lord. I'd have to read 43 books, which is SO not happening, given that I finish maybe a book a week normally. I think I need to go trim my TBR list, too.

message 10: by Cassie (new)

Cassie (cassiemyork) wow! I only have to read 5 books! hahaha! I'm sure I'll read WAY more than that, though! And I'll probably add a lot of books before June!

message 11: by Nathan (new)

Nathan Haha guys, you might want to go through and delete the books you are no longer interested in from your TRL before the challenge starts.

As for you, Cassie, I feel you should ADD more books! :)

Also, Because so many people seem to have huge lists, ill make the challenge from June 1st to August 1st. From June 1st, a discussion will be opened for you to talk about the books you have read so far - this is only optional.

message 12: by Julia (new)

Julia | 432 comments Whichever challenge I'm doing, I try to take most, if not all, the books from my TBR shelves, boxes etc. Two books on my current YA challenge are library books, the rest are books I've owned for some time. But I don't count how many books are on my TBR list, that'd be entirely too depressing. I have 99 or something here listed on Goodreads.

So ten? No sweat.

message 13: by Tatiana (new)

Tatiana (tatiana_g) I have over 300 (!) books on my TBR. It will be tough for me...

message 16: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie (stephsco) I can't believe there was ever a time when I didn't know what to read. I keep adding to my list, but I have learned to be a little more discerning. there are some types of books that just don't click with me, so I think it's getting easier to shave the list down.
Good idea for a challenge!

Stephanie wrote: "I can't believe there was ever a time when I didn't know what to read. I keep adding to my list, but I have learned to be a little more discerning. there are some types of books that just don't cli..."

I totally agree! And also I'm at 70 books now on my TRL list!

message 18: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (kimmie) This is a great challenge. I'll start near the beginning of summer break, and I hope to arrive back at my library with at least 20 new titles to recommend.

message 19: by Teresa (new)

Teresa (teresainohio) 371 books, 37 books. WOW

message 20: by D (new)

D I trimmed my TBR list down from 432 to 352, but 35 books is still way too many for me to read in a couple months. No matter what I'll be happy to shave the list down though, even if it's not a full 10%.

message 21: by Kritika (new)

Kritika (spidersilksnowflakes) I automatically start trimming my to-read when it hits 50. I like to keep it small so that I can find books I actually want to read instead of ones that look kinda-sorta-interesting (which I will forget about in a few days and never actually read). Right now my list has 30 books, so the challenge will be really easy for me!

message 22: by Deborah (new)

Deborah Because of this challenge I decided to pick up some books that have been on my TBR list awhile...the result was that my list is now longer. Curse it all. GRRR

message 23: by [deleted user] (new)

Now I'm at 119 I'll pretend that's 120

message 24: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Recchio (jenniferrecchio) | 12 comments I just recently started using my goodreads account, so there's not much on my to read list. I managed to get it up to 68 books, so I guess that means I have to read seven? And I just realized that one of the series I was planning on reading isn't technically YA. Drat. Guess I'll go with the Gone series and the Blue Bloods series then. Divergent is a bit out of my usual genre, so I'll use it for that requirement. I'll read Supernaturally for a best selling author.
