What do you think is the significance of Downworlders in the world of the series?

How do they parallel groups of people/political situations in the real world?

I think the significance of the Downworlders in the book that they are a difference groups that have stereotypes against them. I think they parallel people in the real world in situations where people are judged by a group they belong to rather than the individual. I think this is a great lesson for YA who read this book.

Ashley (readerandwriter) I agree with you Angie on how the issue with downworlders relate to real life. Downworlders make assumptions about each other which causes hatred and fights/wars. People in the real world definitely do this whether or not they are aware of it or not. This is another reasons why schools need to update required readings to more contemporary reads. So the kids can like and have fun with what they read but also learn the lesson or message teachers are trying to convey to their students. With more contemporary reads in the classrooms, students wouldn't be so reluctant to read.
