Hmmm yeah. The Guide on lowyat actually involves you using 2 Amazon accounts and a gift card thingy that you'd need to buy off of a 3rd party seller or Amazon itself. Mine just needs 1 account and a mastercard/visa that you can use for online purchases.

1. Go to http://www.hotspotshield.com/ , download and install the VPN.
2. Launch the program and wait until it says connection complete/protection. You can check your IP (whether US or not) by clicking the "Test Protection" option or by using another IP checker site. It's important to make sure your IP is in the US or Amazon will temporarily block your account.
3. Go to Amazon, login. Click on the manage your kindle option.

4. On the middle of your left hand side there should an option under Your Kindle Account that says "Kindle Payment Options". Click on that and input your credit card number along with all the relevant details.

5. Then on the next page it'll ask you for your US address.
Use http://www.fakenamegenerator.com/ to generate a random fake name and address. Use your REAL NAME but the fake address and phone number provided (or real number, your choice).

And that's pretty much it! Now you can buy shit :D

Hi! I think e-readers deserve a sharing session in real life, what do you all guys think? We can have a real gathering somewhere, let's say in Perpustakaan Awam Shah Alam Seksyen 13 - everyone with the ereaders can come and bring theirs, to present how effective the ereaders compared to other brands. I have a Nook simple touch, so I can bring mine too. Also a chance for those still thinking about buying what, where and how, to do so.

I can ask Juliana or Bunnybaby as to the venue, she's with PPAS.

If everyone agrees, I think it'll be really worth it.

Syahira | 752 comments saya duduk kat kelana jaya, saya introvert dan malas nak keluar rumah. hahaha..

btw earlier on this forum, someone mentioned using a Samsung Galaxy Tab as a good ereader and apparently I have one so let's just say, I'm NOT willing to trade my Kindle to do a full reading of some 400 pages book on a backlight LCD.

This is in the dark (if you're all well aware, the minus point for non-glow ereaders) and frankly, I don't like the brightness and contrast on this thing for reading. Compared to my Acer Timeline monitor, Samsung Tab is like looking at the sun in the eye. And I'm growing older (*cough*) so I definitely need to look after my eyes so the whole idea of prolonged eyestrain is not feasible to me at all. Tab is not a computer, its a good thing to have if you like to play games or the apps but 16gb (if you like to spend more on memory, do so) is still restrictive if you like to download heavy materials in it (like entire volumes of The Walking Dead).

The samsung tab have pre-downloaded apps for ebooks, one for kobo (the shelves really are limited) and another for Adobe Digital Editions which I use for reading DRM-protected files in pdfs (graphic novels usually) and other epubs that I have. And Amazon does not letting us, non-US people, to download its apps on the app store so.. I can't really do the whispersync but its not really a big deal anyway.

Since I have my trusty laptop and kindle... I'm not seeing myself reading on samsung tab for a long duration of time. I'm not even seeing myself lying on my back with the heavy, expensive tab warming itself on my diaphragm.

btw, I read my kindle in the night until I sleep with it. With indirect lights, the screen is reflective enough that I could read it without much a problem so. And with the tab, Kindle Fire doesn't even look appealing to me as it was with its price tag.

Bright backlight.. argh... real ink and e-ink kills lcd, nuff said.

message 325: by Lord Nouda (last edited May 29, 2012 06:05AM) (new)

Lord Nouda (nouda) | 54 comments I'm just reading a few reviews, the Cover Story seems to be their version of the Touch (Nook/Kindle) but not as good as either. It can read the same files as the Nook (epub, pdf, txt...etc). There's something weird though. Some articles state that one version of it has no wifi...or 3g.

But the main issue for me would be the price. It costs more than twice the price of a Nook or Kindle. If I were you, I'd go with an ereader from one of the big names (even Sony) rather than go with iRiver. The big companies have better support for their devices and are more likely to assist you in case the ereader encounters any hardware probs along the way.

message 326: by Gianne (last edited Jul 26, 2012 09:20AM) (new)

Gianne (willowhippo) | 6 comments Hey guys! Recently boarded the ereader bandwagon :P.

It was between Kindle Touch and Nook Simple Touch (NST). After weighing the pros/cons of both, I ended up with the latter. So just to share some stuff about it.

I'm a first time ereader user, and so far I'm really happy with it. Nice to hold, and I could easily read it with one hand. Adding notes to certain passages is a breeze; initially I thought it will be so slow that I would lose my train of thought, but nope. 6 font types to choose from and a variety of sizes - there are also options for margins and line spacing.

The thing that irks me most is the dictionary. It's decent but could be upgraded way better. For example, say, I don't understand what is 'oscillating' and I tap on it to look it up. Then I would get 'to oscillate'. You can't tap on that to find out what 'oscillate' means, which beats the purpose of the dictionary. There is also no internal dictionary to manually type the word in.

Buying books on B&N is fun for me. After purchasing a book on your computer and if the wifi on your Nook is switched on, it will auto-download your new purchase. Else, there is a refresh button in the library. As usual, the downside is that B&N only sells to US citizens and while you may browse the shop from the Nook, you can't purchase from there if you're not on US land. But Malaysian resourcefulness :D, boleh belok2.

Breakdown of getting books
1) To be able to download free books from B&N, you just need a US address (fake or real). For this, you can download without any VPN on your computer and also can download directly from your Nook.

2) To purchase books from B&N, I used my Malaysian credit card to purchase an EGift card. Yes, send it to yourself... *foreveralone.jpg* Once I get the numbers in email, I input that in the B&N website and voila, I have credit in my acc. To purchase books, you will need a VPN service. I used proXPN as it sets my computer's location to the States and also because it's free :D. So once your location is in the States, feel free to buy the books on the website, and it will sync to your Nook.

3) Another way is to have a friend in the US to purchase an ebook and gift it to you.

The perks of purchasing from B&N:
- the formatting (content list guaranteed to work and text flows better than the free epubs)
- highlight and share paragraphs on social media
- there's a function called LendMe where certain books have it; here you may borrow and lend books to your other Nook buddies (haven't tried this yet... tarak kawan dengan Nook haha)

And I shall end abruptly here, wtfish :D

Syahira | 752 comments I actually have around 200 books in my kindle (46 in "read", several text books, 17 dictionaries, ARCs and stuff). There's a bunch of sites that accepted malaysian credit cards. No need to go into amazon and b&n ecosystem.

There's a new update last month on K4 which blackened the ebook text which made reading in lowlight easy. I guess its the best upgrade for now.

message 332: by Gianne (last edited Jul 29, 2012 10:03AM) (new)

Gianne (willowhippo) | 6 comments Hmmm. The reason I get a couple of my books from there is largely, the formatting. It's quite disconcerting to me when I see the paragraphs broken up in the other ebooks I've gotten from elsewhere. OCD kut :P. And for the love of many-pages-books, the content list actually works, esp if you're the sort who likes to skip back and forth without getting an epilepsy fit from the refreshing e-ink.

But I'm not saying that people should get their books from there... I'm a huge fan of finding other sources for my fix or if it's cheaper and easier :DDD. My intention was more on that it might help other Malaysians who are interested in purchasing books from B&N hehe.

Nisha: Thanks for the link! And lucky you... I heard there was a cut-off date, which, after, international cards (the new registers) were barred.

Norain | 687 comments Amazon has come out with new Kindle and Kindle Fire. I am so curious about Paperwhite. I don't want one since my Kindle is fine enough as it is (I love you, Kindle!) but I do wish I can test-read Paperwhite and see how good it is. You know, like test-driving a car when you're considering to buy one?

message 334: by Syahira (new)

Syahira | 752 comments Shy asked me about the ads and if I want to upgrade my kindle.

I'm very satisfied with my own kindle and I would consider an upgrade only when my own kindle died.

Besides, I've been using Kindle for PC and Kindle for Android and so far, I'm not sure if I want to add more Kindle devices anyway. LoL.

And I repeat, the ads aren't intrusive! Most of it was movie and books ads! I keep my Kindle with wifi off for two weeks to keep The Hunger Games poster on my kindle. I can't wait for the Hobbit or Anna Karenina posters! (now I have Zoe Saldana and Bradley Cooper movie for the screensaver)

I've been following the new Kindle announcement for a while and I'm pretty psyched about Kindle Paperwhite since although I do tablet reading at night, in can be tiring to the eyes (lines in the eyes and stuff).

I am an anti-Kindle Touch (because its obviously still in beta stage which is why Amazon discontinued the line and Kindle 4 survived) and so the added upgrades like new homescreen, responsiveness, light display and price, really did bought me in.

I do want the side buttons like Nook Glow on KT but when I saw the sensitivity of the new touchscreen, I guess its good without it. The thing that bugged me about KT before was the sensitivity on page turns so I'm sort of glad they fix it (which probably was added to the new KT update). The touchscreen in KP is way more responsive at slight touch and the page-turn seems a lot faster now.

It uses capacitive touch screen (and not IR) so the bezel is thinner. And with the current update, I do anticipate new Kindle have sharper and darker display now, which they did!

I noticed from the press conference and other hands-on reviews, the light on KP illuminates the WHOLE page effectively and plus it does have long light % range.

But I'm waiting for longer review on the product because although they said the battery life is more prolonged, I still wanna see the normal 10 minutes reviews on the product before I consider buying it. I find they didnt say anything about Kindle battery drain with Wifi on but with them working on the battery for the light display, I hope it wasnt affected much.

One of the major complain was the space downgrade from 4gb to 2gb. Honestly, on my own kindle, all this time I still have 900mb space from the 1.25gb (I have 267 books). Space is a concern when you put a bunch of hefty PDF in it but it make more sense to use proper tablet for PDF (especially for graphic novels, textbook and magazine).

The downgrade is also because the lack of audio support. But it would make sense to put audiobooks in proper mp3 players like smaller ipod instead and 2gb for audiobooks is never enough.

Shorter version on the press conference

At $119... its actually way cheaper than Kobo Glo and Nook Glowlight. So umm.. it makes perfect sense to get a Kindle for the price alone.

As for the whole epub thing. I know DRM epub books is problematic with a Kindle but because I have a tablet too, I don't really have a preference over which format to use because I have all ereaders app on tablet which work just fine. Besides, you can strip a DRM off a book with a plugin on Calibre to use it on all device.

Kobo did in fact introduce their own new ereader line this week with Kobo Glo ($129), Kobo Mini and Kobo ARC. I hope Kobo decided to enter Malaysia so that we have more readers community.

I like the reading award in Kobo. Kinda like a game/book challenge that you can get pixel badges when you finish certain pages.

as for the Kindle Fire HD and Kobo ARC. We're much better off with Samsung especially for warranty and accessories. I do like the idea of the new Kindle Fire but gadgets are very seasonal.

message 335: by Aidayong (new)

Aidayong | 9 comments By theory you can buy kobo ereader (kobo glo, touch, mini etc) via online without using US credit card or address.
Have thought of buying kobo touch when suddenly saw kobo glo coming this october.

Will try to buy one when the international kobo glo comes out. Right now i am using kobo on ipad and buying kobo ebook online. However the ipad screen is irritating and eye straining. That made me thinking of Kobo ereader.

I wish to buy kindle but do not like the hassle in buying one using US credit card, address, gift coupon etc. Also i am paranoid of giving my address or credit card to third party to buy those for me.

So have any one try buying kobo ereader?

Lord Nouda (nouda) | 54 comments I've heard a lot of complaints about the Kobo build quality and mediocre customer service, which could be why you don't see as many Kobos around. I did see a guy on the train with a Kobo Touch while I was down in Aussieland. Their Sony e-readers are about $180 at Target.

Technically the new Kindle Paperwhite is the latest iteration of the Kindle Touch, with upgraded specs and the built in front-light. It doesn't make much financial sense to sell two different generations of the same line at nearly the same price point. Which is why the K4 is also being phased out for the new K5.

@Aidayong: There are plenty of Kindle/Nook resellers on the Lowyat forums. You don't need to go through the hassle of importing it yourself. Good luck with Kobo. Let us know how it is when you get it. :)

http://www...."

Her Kindle died. Amazon didn't actually delete her books. They offered her a replacement Kindle instead but she wanted it shipped to her in Norway, but they insisted on a UK address (where she originally bought it from) because apparently they don't ship Kindles to Norway. It seems a lot more like a user-issue than Amazon remotely deleting her books. She bought a second-hand Kindle that was out of warranty, and she was lucky that they offered to replace it for free.

What I can't figure out is why she kept insisting that all her ebooks could only be found on her Kindle when afaik permanent copies are kept online, linked to her Amazon account. Just buy another Kindle, connect it to the account and redownload.

There aren't a lot of concrete facts on this case on the internet, just unsubstantiated rumors claiming different things but those "claims" I posted up there are the ones that popped up most often.

Both are roughly the same weight and size, but the Paperwhite is easier to grip one handed without the cover due to the rubbery material used for the back, but is an oil-magnet. The Paperwhite also has a screen that's strangely resistant to oil since after heavy usage I could barely find any visible traces of it. Not sure if the original KT's screen is like that since I slapped on a screen protector early on.

Compared to the KT, the PW's screen is a lot more responsive and it virtually detects every one of your taps...unlike the KT where you need to tap the button properly or it won't do shit. The weird KT bug where a random tap forward brings you to the end of the book has not been brought over to the PW. Amazon most likely overhauled the software to facilitate faster and less buggy responses, I wish they could have updated the KT software as well...because while it is good enough, it requires me to passively memorize the text in order to search for "keywords" to get back to my original page every now and then (like twice on average per book).

The battery life could be significantly less than advertised since my mom was complaining about how short it lasted (not sure how long she spends reading). Theoretically it's supposed to match the battery life of the KT with the light on setting 10. She had it on 21 (max is 24 I think) all the time so it's probably about...half or so.

My own kindle last a couple of days with wifi on periodically. But it never goes 0% though since I always on PC and charging it when I see the battery went by half. since the light is constantly on (and I think some people complain about the wifi mysteriously switched on), I guess thats why there's battery drain.

But its still better than my galaxy tab for sure.
