Lolliepop (snhz) | 246 comments hop!hop!semoga ceria2 semuanye...the other day, my friend tell me that i should consider an e-reader. as we know, many members in this group are users of e-reader.so, could anyone tell me what is actually an e-reader, what can i do wit it, how much it costs,is it worth the price, the advantage, disadvantage, where can i find it and so on...heee...mari2 berkongsi pengetahuan!

message 2: by Jack (new)

Jack (echoicglory) | 295 comments I checked the price at MPH and it felt like I should be getting more books instead of buying one of those e-reader thing... Seriously... RM1000.00? I could get a heap load of book (and would continuously run out of shelf) with that!

I'm really partial to the Samsung Galaxy Tab. Blame Najmuddin because he has one and tells everyone it's the greatest thing he has experienced since Kelantan won the Malaysia Cup. The Tab is not exclusively an e-reader. It's a tablet PC like the iPad but it can act as an e-reader as well. And cheaper than an iPad.

The best e-reader of course is the Kindle but it's not recognised in M'sia. There are ways to get around it. In fact at least one GR-MY member here has a Kindle (SHY I think her name is). But I'm the kind of person who doesn't use things that are not strictly legit. I'm weird like that.

Then there's the Sony e-reader. Fellow member Ulya has one. Ask her for details. They don't sell it here I think. You'll have to order online.

There are other brands but I don't know their names. MPH sells one, I think it's either a Chinese or Taiwanese product.

I'll just wait for the Samsung Tab 2. In the meantime, I'll stick to ol' fashioned dead tree books.

message 4: by Lyla (new)

Lyla Ibrahim (lylaibrahim) I love to get my hands on Iriver Cover Story Touch Edition. It sells in MPH for about RM1000.00. The functions looks like a great e-reader. Although, I may have to wait till I graduated to buy it...huuu

Kataklicik wrote: "To echo Khairul, why would you want an e-reader when you can get a tablet, Lolliepop?"

Let me help answer that.

An e-reader is a very specific device that you use to read e-books. Since it uses e-ink technology, it eliminates the usual glare that you find in any LED screen. And because e-ink consumes minimal power, the battery of an e-reader is measured in days instead of hours, compared with a tablet.

We're talking about reading, good old-fashioned reading. E-readers are designed to be as much like reading on paper as possible, so shouldn't be compared directly to the wider functions you'll find on the latest range of tablets or smartphones: they can't compete because they aren't designed to.

The difference between an e-Reader and any slate PC or tablet is like the difference between a calculator and a computer.

And besides I didn't recommend a tablet PC over an e-reader, just that the best e-reader (Kindle) isn't available in Msia so go for a tablet instead.

LOL. Yeah, that seems like a sensible choice, given the current situation.

Too true, and that goes without saying.

Any reading gadget can never beat old-fashioned reading, i.e. dead tree books. But if we are talking about e-reader versus tablet/slate PC, that's my argument.

No matter how glossy and good-looking Samsung Galaxy Tab is, if Sony e-reader PRS-650 is back in stock, I'd still prefer e-reader to tablet.

message 31: by Xara_fatima (new)

Xara_fatima | 255 comments Beberapa hari lalu, saya ternampak seorang programmer (indonesian) bawa Kindle ke office. Sempat membelek-belek Kindle. E-reader is much better.

Mula-mula ingatkan dia beli di Indonesia, tapi katanya beli di Malaysia sahaja. Harga lingkungan RM300-400. Terlupa pula nak tanya spesifik kedai tempat dia membeli.

Part paling best - bateri dia tahan sehingga 3 minggu!

Ah, terlebih promote pula. sebelum ni rasa macam tak berminat nak beli. Dah tulis-tulis di sini, terasa berminat pula..hehe

All IT Hypermart di DigiMall PJ ada jual iRiver e-reader.

Insya Allah sangat berbaloi menurut saya. Terpulang keputusan saudari.
