The Language of Flowers

The use of flowers, and the symbolism and meaning behind flowers is something which comes up often within Victorian novels, and in some of our previous discussions we have talked about this flower symbolism and the role flowers play within the books.

While the symbolic use of flowers which was called "the language of flowers" and was commonly used in courtship practices, predates the Victorian age, it was very popular within the Victorian era, for in times when people couldn't or at least by the restraints of society were not suppose to openly and frankly express their feelings, they had to come up with other creative and discrete ways to convey their thoughts to each other.

So almost every known type of flower, and every color of said flower had its own distinct meaning. I found these web sites online which discusses the use of the language of flowers, and the meanings behind the flowers.
