Jeanne (jeanne_voelker) | 52 comments Dennis, What a great idea! It's time to teach history as stories so young people will be more interested. How will you change your novel to create the YA version?

J.D.R. Hawkins (jdrhawkins) | 15 comments I wish I could but I wanted to include the gore. My bad. But that's war. Sugar coating it doesn't do my story justice.

message 153: by Steven (new)

Steven Kohlhagen (stevenkohlhagen) | 36 comments it is stunning how much of history is gore. the history of human beings: inability to get along. when the Texans marched into arizona/new mexico in the civil war, the apaches, navajos, utes, new mexicans, and whites stopped killing each other to deal with the rebels. when the defeated rebels went back to texas, the others went back to doing what they did best: fighting each other. why can't people just get along? www.stevenwkohlhagen.com

Chrisl (chrisl2) When I saw Jeanne's observation "to teach history as stories so young people ..." the memory of Axe ... came to mind. If an author, using James Hockey storyteller format would be my model.

The Axe the Shield and the Triton

message 155: by Jeanne (new)

Jeanne (jeanne_voelker) | 52 comments Wow, what a find, Jomon! And Mr. Hockey never intended to be an author, but learned to write because this story needed to be told. He learned well --the reviews are full of praise for the writing, as well as the story!

Elisabeth | 16 comments The second entry in my series of historical mystery shorts, the Mrs. Meade Mysteries, has been released! There's also a new price; both this one and the first, The Silver Shawl, are now just $1.00.

The Parting Glass A Mrs. Meade Mystery by Elisabeth Grace Foley

Mrs. Meade is not the only one in Sour Springs who is shocked at the news when Clyde Renfrew is accused of a drunken assault on a woman. Clyde, a sober, steady young rancher, seemed the last person likely to do such a thing. Between an emphatic witness and Clyde’s own apparent reluctance to defend himself, the case seems open and shut. But Mrs. Meade—who seems to have a knack for being just across the hall when things happen—has a few ideas of her own…

message 161: by Marta (new)

Marta Tandori (marta_tandori) | 7 comments Hi Everyone - My name is Marta Tandori. I'm a lover of historical fiction, especially books that alternate between the past and the present - so much that I decided to write one myself. CONTINUANCE alternates between the present and 1905, with the present-day story dealing with the kidnapping of Ethan du Maurier, a seven-year-old boy. The 1905 story deals with a horrific scandal that almost destroyed the du Maurier family. Both stories are connected by the murdered remains found in a pirate's tunnel in an eatery in Savannah, Georgia as the FBI search for the lost young boy.

If you love historical fiction set in early 20th century America and if you enjoy reading alternating story lines in the vein of Tess Gerritsen's THE BONE GARDEN (one of my favorites), I hope you'll consider my book, CONTINUANCE. One reviewer had the following to say:

"What possible connection could there be between a 100 year old murder and a kidnapping that is still going on today? What could a body found in a warehouse in Savannah have to do with one of the premier families of Boston?

From New York, to Savannah, to Boston and Miami, this story is a veritable journey through history.
The immigrant community, the slums and the fight to survive is compared vividly to the lifestyles of the rich with their parties, cotillions and balls. We are taken to a railroad camp in Florida where we meet some Chinese immigrants and learn some of the horrors that they had to live with in order to survive here in America.

Layer upon layer, and plot upon plot this story will keep you going right up until the end. Very enjoyable."

Ruth Chatlien | 27 comments I just opened a new GR giveaway for The Ambitious Madame Bonaparte. Ten books to be given away at the end of this month:

As a clever girl in stodgy, mercantile Baltimore, Betsy Patterson dreams of a marriage that will transport her to cultured Europe. When she falls in love with and marries Jerome Bonaparte, she believes her dream has come true—until Jerome’s older brother Napoleon becomes an implacable enemy.

Based on a true story, The Ambitious Madame Bonaparte is a historical novel that portrays this woman’s tumultuous life. Elizabeth Patterson Bonaparte, known to history as Betsy Bonaparte, scandalized Washington with her daring French fashions; visited Niagara Falls when it was an unsettled wilderness; survived a shipwreck and run-ins with British and French warships; dined with presidents and danced with dukes; and lived through the 1814 Battle of Baltimore. Yet through it all, Betsy never lost sight of her primary goal—to win recognition of her marriage.

My new Western novella, Left-Hand Kelly, is now available on Amazon Kindle! A paperback edition will follow shortly.

Book Description: Sixteen-year-old Lew Kelly grew up idolizing his enigmatic ex-gunfighter father. Everyone thought Lew’s habit of practicing his quick draw was a harmless amusement—until the day when a boys’ hot-headed quarrel exploded into gunplay, with disastrous results.

Three years later, Lew is withdrawn and bitter—and he still carries a gun. When an unexpected twist of circumstances forces him to face again the memories and the aftermath of that ill-fated fight, will old wrongs be righted—or will the result be an even worse tragedy than before?

K.B. Laugheed | 1 comments I am new to Goodreads so I don't really know what I'm doing, but I'd like to suggest my novel, The Spirit Keeper, as an option for anyone looking for a book about Colonial America--specifically Colonist/Native relationships. It's the story of a 17-year-old girl who gets taken captive by Indians in 1747, but not really. It's really about what people are willing to do to survive. What would YOU do?

Linda Graham (lindalgraham) | 11 comments Voices Beckon by Linda Lee Graham Hello all - did you know it's Constitution Week? The 227th anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution is this Wednesday. To mark the date I've reduced the price of Voices Beckon to 99¢ through Thursday, September 18th -- a 75% savings.

Set in 1780s Philadelphia, Voices Beckon spans seven years in the lives of David Graham, Elisabeth Hale, and Liam Brock—three young Britons who crossed the Atlantic in search of a new beginning. Rich in historical detail, the novel chronicles their coming of age against the vivid backdrop of the developing United States of America.

Elisabeth | 16 comments Corral Nocturne A Novella by Elisabeth Grace Foley

My latest release and first historical romance is now available! Corral Nocturne is a short and sweet retelling of the beloved Cinderella story set on the Montana prairies:

Life on her brother’s ranch is lonely for Ellie Strickland. Ed’s ungracious manners and tight-fisted habits keep visitors away and his mother and sister close to home. But when Cole Newcomb, son of the wealthiest rancher in the county, meets Ellie by chance, he is struck by an unexpected impulse to rescue her from her solitude—and Ellie’s lonely summer is transformed.

When Cole asks her to go with him to the Fourth of July dance, Ellie is determined that nothing, from an old dress to Ed’s sour temper, will stand in her way. By the time the Fourth of July fireworks go off at midnight, will they herald only more heartache, or maybe—just maybe—a dream come true?

Novella, approximately 21,000 words.

Frank Hopkins (hopkinsfe) | 4 comments My novel Unplanned Choices is available in paperback and e-book format at Amazon.com. Learn more about my writing on http://www.frankehopkins.com

Unplanned Choices by Frank E. Hopkins Unplanned Choices, a coming-of-age, romantic historical drama, is set in the late 1960s and early 1970s in New York City and Long Island in the United States during the turbulent period of the Vietnam War, the Civil Rights struggle, the sexual revolution, the women’s movement, and the struggle for legalizing abortion.

The novel is the story of Steve Lynch and his first love, Anna Marino. Both Anna and Steve are raised in the Roman Catholic faith and struggle with the church’s prohibition of sexual activity and their growing sexual drives. The both meet in college after abandoning the church’s restriction. Anna became pregnant and died during an abortion, before abortion on demand became legal in New York. The novel describes the impact of the abortion on Steve, the abortionist, Anna’s family and friends, and one NYPD investigator who commits murder.

If Anna could have legally had an abortion, she may not have died and the impact on the other characters in the novel would not have been as tragic.
Situations similar to that portrayed in Unplanned Choices could be replicated hundreds of thousands of times in the future if abortion becomes illegal or heavily restricted in the United States.
