Shay (shaylyn318) I am almost finished with DOA. It was good until Jamie and Claire left to fond Roger.I have pretty much been in the same spot since Feb. Frankly I don't give a shit about spoiled brat Bree. She was horrible to Jamie. He is a good man. He would do anything to protect his family and has. It is not his fault what happened to Roger. Bree should have been more honest with everyone. All she does is keep secrets. I don't want to read about her, I want to read about Jamie and Claire. Right now I am at the part where they are at the Mohawk village and trying to get Roger.

message 2: by Carren (new)

Carren Kay | 953 comments Don't give up! Keep reading, it does get better. I know Bree is a real pain in the a**, but remember she came from a time when women were allowed to think for themselves and do for themselves. She honestly believes that she can do anything. She learns that she can't.
She's not one of my favorite characters, but she does add dimension to the story(s).

KEEP GOING !!!

message 3: by Shay (new)

Shay (shaylyn318) I am not stopping but I am not reading as much. The first book was a little hard to get through, some parts were slow but since then I have breezed right through them. Now it's slowed again.

message 4: by Megan (new)

Megan Same thing happened to me. I was reading the books back to back and something in DOA just made me lose interest. I still love this series though.

message 5: by Carren (new)

Carren Kay | 953 comments I'll admit it did read a little slow, but I persevered.

AliNicole Reads (alinicolereads) "Echo" was was like this for me, I started and stopped reading that book so many freakin' times. I could not get past the William and LJ sections b/c I just wasn't a fan of them.

But by the end of the book I was loving William and after reading "Brotherhood of the Blade" and starting "Hand of Devils" my opinion of LJ has done a 180.

Just give yourself a break, maybe a few days or a few weeks. Take another shot and maybe you'll be in the right head space to finish and actually enjoy the book.

message 7: by Patricia (new)

Patricia (pg4003) | 89 comments I'm reading A Breath of Snow and Ashes right now and I almost feel the same way as you. I almost didn't make it through The Fiery Cross, but persevered, and now I'm just not enthralled with ABOSAA like I was with the others. I'm going to stay with it because I do want to read all of these, have already bought all of them on my Kindle, but to me, the first 3 books were the best. I want more of Jamie & Clare, more steamy scenes, am I asking for too much?? I have several passages from the first 3 books saved in My Clippings on my Kindle and periodically I just go back and read them over. I mean the historical stuff is interesting, but that's not the reason I'm reading these books. Know what I mean??

Karen (EarthAngel2911) (karens_923) | 5 comments I too floundered through The Fiery Cross. It got slow for me, and I put it aside as I would read other "quick" books to give myself a break, until almost a year went by.

I finally finished it just last week and am glad I stuck it out. I had read each book, one after the other, and I think I just got stuffed with Diana Gabaldon after, what... 4,500 pages or so? So, I needed a break but am glad I finished.

I just started A Breath of Snow and Ashes, and I'm reading it just a couple of chapters at a time, interspersing other books, and that's working for now. (I would probably be reading just ABOSAA, except that I have a few library books out that I can't renew, so I gotta finish those.)

I'm glad to be back in the Diana Gabaldon mode. The Outlander series is honestly my favorite of all time (and I've read quite a few books)! :-)

message 9: by Shay (new)

Shay (shaylyn318) I haven't got TFC on my Nook yet. I have all the others. Outlander was free and some of the others were around five dollars. I was hoping TFC would go down a little before I bought it. Instead it went up a dollar :(

I think I will take a break and read some other books that I have on my Nook but have been neglecting since reading this series. I started Outlander in December. I have read a couple other books also. I am kinda dreading TFC because I have heard it is drawn out and kind of boring.

message 10: by Patricia (new)

Patricia (pg4003) | 89 comments Shay, TFC is so much about war and fighting. I just don't enjoy reading about that very much.

message 11: by Carren (new)

Carren Kay | 953 comments I may be in the minority here, but I really liked the historical aspect of the story. I thought it tied in so well with the characters.

message 12: by Lady (new)

Lady England | 91 comments I dont't care what is going on...I just love reading about Jaime, his life, what he's doing, how he's being a hero or loving his wife. Hmmm.

message 13: by AliNicole Reads (new)

AliNicole Reads (alinicolereads) M - Try taking a break from Echo and pick up a few of the LJ books. I really got into his character after reading Brotherhood of the Blade.

message 14: by Kit (new)

Kit (ndkitten) When I first started reading this series, I thought "OMG, I'll never make it through this first book!" My friend told me to "stick with it, it's gets better, I promise." So I did and it did and I've been a lover of this series ever since. TFC was probably the hardest book for me to get through, after the 1st half of Outlander that is! LOL Then I had to wait for Echo to come out, I was so excited! And I just can't get past the Lord John and William sections! I've picked this book up numerous times. I'll try again, I'm sure, I just know if I can get past the first part it'll be worth it! :)

message 15: by Fawn (new)

Fawn | 404 comments I can not get enough of these books. The more I read them the more I want. I agree with Ali, M. You may like William and Lord John if you read the Lord John Book. They are fast reads and It may make you a lot more interested in Echo. At least you'd have better insight into Lord John and it does give ties to Jamie as well.
Thats not to say you have to like these book. Every one likes the same thing. It's just a suggestion if you think it would help.

Terry (Ter05 TwiMoms/ MundieMoms) (ter05) | 292 comments When I first read the books I went from one to the other without a minute in between and still can't discuss them individually, because it is one long story to me. I re-read them the same way before Echo came out. My son, my daughter in law, and my brother both did the same - did not put them down until they were finished. I agree with those who struggled with the first half of Echo however. Although I had just re-read the series I felt like I was lost in the first part and had little interest in William. I just can't get interested in reading the Lord John books although I am sure that would help. The second half of Echo was great and worth wading through the first half, but I guess I kind of resent that I would need to read a different series to really enjoy part of this one that I love so much.

Terry (Ter05 TwiMoms/ MundieMoms) (ter05) | 292 comments Try skimming. I have to admit I skimmed quite a bit just reading enough to get the general idea of what was happening and then when it got interesting I dug right into it like the other books. It's better than not reading it!

message 18: by Fawn (new)

Fawn | 404 comments I just reread my post. Sheesh I should have done that before I posted huh?! T meant to say NOT everyone likes the same thing. There are a lot of good books out there and the important thing is that we are all reading. Which I think is a very good thing.

message 19: by Patricia (new)

Patricia (pg4003) | 89 comments Terry, I'm so glad to hear you say that about skimming. I always feel like I'm cheating when I do that, but I'm like you, I feel like it's better than not reading it.

Terri, I agree. I skimmed through on my first read through the series, now I'm listening and enjoying it all anew.

I just checked out the books from the library and so far am like on page 50 of Lord John and the Private Matter. It started out slow, so I am hoping to get more into the story. I am more into love stories than myteries and intrigues I guess but am giving the books a chance.

I agree with you Terry, and it seems several other posts here. I have tried the Lord John books, but am just not that interested. I had trouble with Echo also because of the LJG references, but trying to read the LJG books just added frustration and resentment that I should have to do that to get through a book in a series that I love! Even though they
are by the same author, the genre is different and not one that I am interested in. I
guess I will have to try them again, but will do so under protest.

I also enjoy listening to them, I have listen to all but Echo more then once. I just finished DOA & TFC (have one of the books always on my iPhone) everytime I listen to them I hear something I missed or forgot about the 1st 5 times of listening or from reading the books. Sometimes you don't realize the importance of something you skimmed until you are 1 or 2 books beyond that one. I just started listening to Voyager (I know kind of backwards) and what is really bugging me is how Roger & Bree's voices have changed from Voyager to DOA. TFC was never one of my fave books but I really enjoyed it this last time I listened to it, love the ending from where Jemmy wants to help build hog pens to the part where Jemmy wants to know "Where I gots balls".

message 25: by Lisa (last edited Apr 04, 2011 12:01PM) (new)

Lisa I have lost interest much sooner. I have read all books up to the A breath of Snow and ashes, then started to read Echo - and reading it felt like walking through a pool of chewing gum. It was so hard, SO boring and the three strands of plot just annoyed me. I'm not really interested in Lord John and all the stuff surrounding him and the Brianna stuff didn't really bother me as well. Echo now sits on my bookshelf, untouched and starting to dust ;) I just can't touch it - I don't want to.

The first 3 novels of the saga are the ones that I read over and over again - the historical context is extremely interesting (for me) and Jamie and Claire are still rather young. I'm not into the whole stuff with America though I kind of liked Cross and Ashes though I probably wont read them again and I also have the feeling that Dianas writing sort of downgraded and lost its magic :(

Terry (Ter05 TwiMoms/ MundieMoms) (ter05) | 292 comments I agree totally with what you said, Lisa, about Echo. I could hardly get through the second half but then I did love the second half. I also have no interest in reading the Lord John books. I love Outlander for Jamie and Claire's story although I love Young Ian and some of the others. I too liked the storyline in Scotland better than in America, but can't say I didn't enjoy any of the books until I got to Echo. I've read them all twice and probably will again. I'll skip half of Echo when I do!

Hi Ali.nicole, I just finished reading the Lord John books and so far I liked the Brotherhood of the Blade best I and am now reading Lord John and the Hand of the Devils. But I am not as much into these books. But I am glad I checked these out from the library because now I can undertand who some of the characters are that where in the Echo book. I much prefer reading about Jamie and Claire. And I am looking forward to also reading Lord John and the Scottish Prisoner, which I hear was during the time Jamie was at Helwater.

message 28: by AliNicole Reads (new)

AliNicole Reads (alinicolereads) I'm still working on Hand of Devils and like you I'm not digging this one so much. I probably should have taken a break in between Brotherhood and this one.

LJ is a either a hit or a miss with me, but getting the back stories on characters is certainly worth the time investment.

Hi Ali.nicole, This maybe a dumb question or questions but I am confused about the part in Lord John and the Brotherhood of the Blade and wondered if you or someone can clear up what exactly what happened when Lord John told Jamie 'If you came to my bed I bet I can make you scream'...(something like that) what did Jamie do when he said that, hit the wall next to him? and did Lord John run out and do that mmmm hmmm to himself? I am trying to figure that out and read it several times but it didn't make sense to me... and what did Lord John mean by he saw something in Jamie's face at the moment he told him that? did he realize that Jamie had been raped or something happened to him to make him react the way he did? and what caused Lord John to do what he did to himself, the lust he feels for Jamie? I am sorry but that really confused me and I had to ask someone about it.

Thank you Ali.nicole! WOW. I do appreciate that link. That certainly did answer my questions and made me understand it alot better...

Teresita A | 531 comments A friend of mine is now reading THE FIERY CROSS and says it started out so slow that she has not been able to get into that one as much as the first three. I told her not to give up on it because by middle of book or so it gets alot better. And what happens to Roger is very heartbreaking. Just thinking of it makes me sad. One of my favorite parts from that book is where claire feels someone touch her in the room and she comes down to see Jamie waiting for her and gives her back her wedding rings that he used to gamble with.
A librarian noticed I was reading one of the Lord John books and told me how much she loved the author and the Outlander books and cried when Murtaugh died. I was happy to meet another Outlander fan.

Thanks for posting that. It seems like I may have read it before, but it was a good reminder.
Did you notice that DG mentioned Lord John and the Scottish Prisoner (Lord John Grey, #3) by Diana Gabaldon in the *2007* post? I know it takes a long time for her books, but... wow.

I sort of disagree about The Fiery Cross. It was almost a chore to me to get through that book. I almost abandoned it but everyone told me to hang in there so I did. It was better toward the end. But all that war talk is just not interesting to me.

message 38: by Gwennie, biblioholic (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 3151 comments I got into it once the never ending day was over. The last day of the gathering was almost a third of the book!

Jessa ♥ EvilDarkSide (metalgirl80) | 169 comments I had some down moments but overall this series has consumed me. Its my all-time favorite. As long as I get to read about Jamie and Claire then I don't think I could ever get tired of the series. I have a Jamie obsession *sigh*

message 40: by Carren (new)

Carren Kay | 953 comments Wendy: I agree, the gathering was a bit long, but I found the historical bits very interesting and really liked the book.

message 41: by Gwennie, biblioholic (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 3151 comments The gathering was important, and it was long because a lot happened there.

But I do remember feeling like it was never ending. When I loan it to people that's the section they always struggle with.

message 42: by Gwennie, biblioholic (last edited Apr 13, 2011 12:37PM) (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 3151 comments Jessa - I have that same obsession. The one where you're tempted to make out with the pages when you read certain parts... courageous strapping sexy redheads in kilts, what's not to love.

Teresita A | 531 comments Hi Jessa. Yes I am Jamie obsessed too and I finally got the t-shirt that I ordered that says I'D GO THROUGH THE STONES FOR JAMIE FRASER from spreadshirt.com and I love it...I also want to order the one that says: I Just want to go to Scotland fall through some stones wake up in 1743 and find JAMES FRASER Is that too much to ask?- from Cafepress or zazzle.com
And I told my friend Kim that if she did not like THE FIERY CROSS I was sure she would like OF SNOW AND ASHES better.

Jessa ♥ EvilDarkSide (metalgirl80) | 169 comments Wendy, don't worry...I don't think that's weird at all. Says alot about us, huh? ;)

OMG, Teresita! I so want that shirt! How obsessed am I? Me and my best friend are planning a trip to Scotland/Ireland for next summer. We will visit the standing stones and I need to be wearing that shirt when we take pictures! I'm taking my Outlander book with me to include in the pictures. I know....I'm a crazy lass. LOL!

Teresita A | 531 comments Jessa I envy you! Wish I could go. I hope you have a great time. I have to save up some money to make a trip like that. I want to go to England and Scotland.

message 46: by Gwennie, biblioholic (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 3151 comments Going to Scotland is a dream of mine. In fact, my husband had to plan a faux vacation for one of his school projects and he chose Scotland thinking that I'd have fun helping him.

Yeah, NOT! I was so irritated that I had to plan my dream vacation and read about all the awesome stuff I want to do but don't get to! It was awful!

Teresita A | 531 comments My dream has always been to visit England but since reading the Outlander series I now want to also see Scotland desperately too...

Jessa ♥ EvilDarkSide (metalgirl80) | 169 comments We're going for two weeks and believe me England is on the itinerary! Probably France, too. England and France are only going to be 1-2 days each. The bulk of our time is going to be spent in Ireland with a few days in Scotland.

message 49: by Teresita (last edited Apr 13, 2011 01:03PM) (new)

Teresita A | 531 comments My sister works for the airlines and went to Scotland years ago but was not much impressed with it and she has no desire to see England but she liked Paris..She has been just about everywhere...except australia, russia, Germany, Italia, etc..she loves Madrid Spain and Ireland.

Jessa ♥ EvilDarkSide (metalgirl80) | 169 comments I mainly want to see the stones and do some castle touring in Scotland. Maybe go to Edinburgh for a day. Other than that, our main stay will be in Ireland. It's so beautiful over there and we are booking a stay in a little village called Snowdonia. The scenery is breathtaking!
