DevonAlyse | 75 comments Scare you? It scares me. I haven't been able to read anything for the past month, because I've been sick and find it hard to concentrate. Does anyone else have this problem? How do you get over it?

I miss my books...

message 2: by Diana (new)

Diana | 31 comments I had this problem too... I was an insomniac for quite a while... and since I slept like 2-3 hours a night, I couldn't focus on reading... The greatist tip I personally can give you, is not to put pressure on this... when the time will be right, you'll read again, just like riding a bycicle...
When I pushed myself into reading, I had a hard time reading more than 10-15 pages...I just couldn't do it, because I had the feeling I had to... so when I got back to it, I started reading a little and then a little more and even now, since I am a student, I don't get to read daily, but when I do I can go for hours... or sometimes, just for 10-15 minutes...
:)
It will get back to normal, if you really want this, don't worry...
A big hug!

Jackie (thenightowl) Have you tried audio books? Sometimes when I physically can't read (my eyes sometimes hurt when I'm on the computer all day) I go for an audio book. It helps me get some reading done, while still resting.

DevonAlyse | 75 comments Im not really worried about it just don't want to lose too much time and mess up my goal for this year.

@Jackie, audio books gave a tendency to put me to sleep. I'm not sure why, nobody ever read to me to get me to go to sleep when I was little. Yeah random!

Dee (austhokie) | 618 comments maybe a different genre or something out of your comfort zone...you might just be at a point where what you normally read isn't doing it for you and you need something else

Me too! I usually listen while cleaning, walking or working but if I need to get to sleep I get about 15 minutes in and then ZZZzzzzzz. Hehe.

message 8: by Diana (new)

Diana | 31 comments hehe, I do the exact same thing! If I can't fall asleep, I put an audio book on... listen to the voice and the story and it just happens :)

Adrienne Teague (ateague) | 409 comments Maybe you just need some mental Cool Whip. You know, something with absolutely no nutritional value. Something you don't have to think about that can get your brain back in the habit of looking at the words. This usually works for me.

Suzanne (esmerelda1) | 19 comments I gave up "buying" books for lent and it's seriously killing me. I haven't been inside a Borders or a Barnes N Nobles for weeks! For some reason though, this has helped my concentration when it comes to reading books. It's like I need to finish reading all the books I started before Easter comes so that I'll have something to look forward to when I can go to the Bookstore again!

message 11: by Natalie (new)

Natalie (aquariusnat) | 41 comments I've lost the urge to read too . Its been a couple of weeks since I actually read a chapter of my current book . I tried bringing it with me to a public place , the mall , sat down in the main court with a snack and instead of taking the book out reading I people-watched . I don't know where my boredom is coming from . Usually I can focus long enough to finish at least a chapter or two . Hopefully this'll change soon ! I really do like the story and want to finish it .

Jane | 221 comments Maybe everyone has "spring fever" :).

message 13: by Susan (new)

Susan (susangollahermiller) Sometimes I get like this and I pick-up 5 or 6 books, read one or two paragraphs and just can't get into anything. That is when I have to just give my mind some time off, watch TV, organize my book shelves, update my reviews, etc. Sometimes it helps to read something really light, like Adrienne said, something that you do not really have to think about.

message 14: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne (esmerelda1) | 19 comments Manga books are good like that. They're really light reading for me and I feel very productive when I finish one within an hour of starting it ;)

message 15: by Dalene (new)

Dalene I will read more than one book at a time and constantly change from genre to genre. This helps me to avoid the "lull" in reading. I find myself not being able to be read because of time crunch with other things going on in life. If you're slowing up in a book, get another one and see if you just fly through it. It helps me and I quickly go through books this way.

message 16: by Kristi (new)

Kristi (kristicasey) Listen to your "self". You knows when you're tired, when you're hungry, etc. So it also knows when you need a break. Watch tv, watch movies. If you need the literature connection watch movies based on books. Let your tired, ill brain rejuvenate itself. You'll be back in the reading chair in no time.

And I know that sounds all philosophical and such, but I've found that's what works best for me. I pay attention to what I need when I need it, and I stress a lot less about the little things.

message 17: by DevonAlyse (new)

DevonAlyse | 75 comments So I didn't read a whole book in March. I finally picked up a pretty good one a few days ago and it will be finished tomorrow!! I'm so excited.

I read a lot of mystery/action/fantasy type stuff, and I really think it was the genre. The book I started reading the other day is Beastly by Alex Flinn, and I'm flying through it. Of course it's one fo those books where you know what's gonna happen...you just don't know how it's gonna happen.

Thank you all for your comments. I guess maybe it was wrong that I was mad at myself for not being able to read like I normally do. But hopefully I'm back on track now!!

message 18: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne (thisoilfieldwife) | 134 comments I probably should have, too. We've had some stuff going on around the house (we are getting ready to move across country...again) and I just can't seem to make the time to read or when I have the time, I can't seem to focus on what I'm reading because I have a million other things running through my mind that I have to get done in order to move. Talk about missing the peacefulness of books!

message 19: by Kristi (new)

Kristi (kristicasey) Moving is uber stressful and way too hectic. Good luck! I hope it goes smooth and quick, and you'll be back in the reading chair soon!
