ABANDONED. A world within a mattress?

Hi,
I had a query at work from someone that is trying to find a book that her father remembers from his childhood in the 1950's. The only information I have is that the book was about a world inside a mattress. Has anyone any ideas?

Thanks for that, I could only find that book that seemed to fit the brief. It is filed under traditional tales but I can't find any earlier editions of it, so I presume it is too modern!
