Hello,

During the week of March 21- March 27 we are reading Part III Chapter 2 Entirely Beloved Cromwell. Spring-December 1530 pp 198-271.

This thread will discuss the following:

Week 5 – March 21- March 27 -> Finish Part III Chpt 2 pp 198-271

Remember, these weekly non spoiler threads are just that - non spoiler. There are many other threads where "spoiler information" can be placed including the glossary and any of the other supplemental threads.

We will open up a thread for each week's reading. Please make sure to post in the particular thread dedicated to those specific chapters and page numbers to avoid spoilers. We will also open up supplemental threads as we have done for other spotlighted reads.

We kicked off this book on February 21. We look forward to your participation. Amazon, Barnes and Noble and other noted on line booksellers do have copies of the book and shipment can be expedited. The book can also be obtained easily at your local library, on iTunes for the ipad, etc. However, be careful, some audible formats are abridged and not unabridged.

There is still time remaining to obtain the book and get started. There is no rush and we are thrilled to have you join us. It is never too late to get started and/or to post.

Welcome,

Garret

Garret (ggannuch) This week Cromwell dies. Do you think it was poison? suicide? We learn more about the King's court and where Cromwell is heading.

This may be where the book diverges from history; in terms of how Cromwell actually died or how it was reported historically he did. Or am I mistaken?

Garret (ggannuch) I think she takes her facts about this from Cavendish, and I don't think anyone knows just how Wolsey died, only that he fell ill on his journey. There has always been speculation about whether he was poisoned by someone or poisoned himself. How do you think Mantel handles this?

Odd that there are such murky details surrounding the death of a Cardinal.

Garret (ggannuch) Why do you think Cromwell so attached to Cardinal Wolsey? Was Wolsey more of a mentor or a father-figure for Cromwell? What do you think love and loyalty mean for Cromwell?

I guess I am by now confused with the relationship; I do not think that anybody can enter Cromwell's mind even the author. Cromwell was a tortured soul and human being; and power was really his mistress and arbiter not the King or Wolsey.

Garret (ggannuch) Perhaps we will feel differently by the end. Or in the sequel!

Possibly - he does seem rather detached from Wolsey's death...more as an observer that the event happened but not that emotionally vested.
