The novel is, of course, a work of fiction. But there is a lot of historical background to the story. Some drug dealers did indeed prize the Paso Fino horse. And DEA did indeed do a lot of investigative work about Paso Fino breeders. The novel mentions a Paso Fino ranch in Florida, La Luisa, that was taken over by the government. This actually happened.
